I can't say I haven't had it happen, or at least that I seen. I am so sorry Tas. I don't have any good suggestions. Confront the person?
Well it's similar and not. But there were enough likenesses to make me question things. Plus the fav/unfav thing made it all seem all the more suspicious ( go go saving all alerts in my email). If it wasn't the the fav/unfav I would have just assumed maybe the author wasn't aware what she was doing it.
I went the passive aggressive route and just put the story on alert so that she knows I've seen it. Maybe that will be enough.
That's devious enough for me approve of, muahaha.
I didn't know you could monitor unfavs also, I don't think I want to know!
Alright now I have a question...
What do you do when people suggest how you write your story? As I've got that from three people today. I'm flattered that Missa effects people to a point where they're concerned and it's nice to be thrown a curveball once in a while, and they want to see Missa react in a way they want, but...
I sort of want to please people, you know? But I also want to write what I intended, and now I'm confused as maybe, they're right. (I'm trying to be vague about it as I don't want to tell the entire plot here, as I know some of you read it.)

You can't really monitor them. The way I found out was that I remembered her name was familar. I looked at her profile and saw me not listed so I did search on her name in my email and saw the fav alert there. I put 2 and 2 together at that point.
But to answer your other question, I might say 'oh that's a really interesting idea. I'll keep it mind' and then do what I wanted to do anyway. I always listen because hey, someone might have an idea that is better than I had.

*HUGS* Tas. What a rotten thing. I guess I would probably have handled it the same way since I'm not really a confrontational person either. It's just lousy, after all the effort you put into your work, to have someone copy it.
About Zevran, I really don't think he regrets his life as a Crow, except for Rinna. In the game he does have compassion, but he is also ruthlessly practical when needed. I have delved into his compassion in my fic a bit, but I also have a fair amount of ruthless Zevran to write in upcoming chapters. It seems, from the stories he tells, that both elements have been there from his very first mark.

I listen too. I believe in constructive criticism. Sometimes what someone says makes sense, but I always modify it to my own tastes and the story (small things). If it is a major thing, like my character acting in a certain way or a such... I thank them (even if in my own head) and go about my business. You know the story, you know Missa, as we don't, you know what you want to say and how to tell it. I adore Missa, so I have nothing to say LOL! I am just enjoying the ride!
What Gil said. It's your story. And I love Missa the way she is.

Seems a tough one to me... Because on the one hand you created Missa, she's YOURS to do with as you please, on the other hand... Her fans might be right. Or you both might be right... Or neither of you are right.... Which would be weird but could happen.
Perhaps you could play around with it? Write it your way, write it their way and then decide.

I say go with what your gut tells you on the feedback. If you think you have received a suggestion that really improves your own ideas, then go for it. If you don't think it's going to work, there's nothing wrong with letting that advice go.
Good luck!

The trouble with being too protective about your stuff is ... you are using other peoples creative work, their world and their characters, too.Tasmen wrote...

Is it a blatant copy or was the author inspired by your story? Maybe she didn't like the way it went and decided to do something similar? This would explain the fav/unfav thing.
The question is how similar is it? Does she copy your plot? Original characters? Or is she simply using the same premise and developing her own plot?

Oh trust me, that thought did come to mind about writing within DA land. Fanfic is all about using someone else's stuff after all. Really, it was phrasing that was used and the 'thoughts' one of the canon characters was having that were way alike. It's characterization that was never in the game.
The plot (it's only one chapter so far) doesn't seem to be going in the same direction so it's not a complete copy and really, I would have thought not much of it if it wasn't for the unfav/fav that happened. That is sort of what threw me over the edge of 'oh we see things the same' to 'wooooah...'.

Okay, yes. The Warden gives him a friendship/relationship and shows him another side of his life, but I don't see it as redemption story, but a second chance. There's no penance for what he did. He feels no remorse for his "crimes," and will disaprove if you judge him on it..
I agree and disagree. I do think he has remorse but for only one crime, Rinna. It's a single regret that he holds and part of why he wanted to do the whole suicide by Warden thing. I do agree that it is not about redemption, though, and much more about Zevran being given a second chance outside of the Crows.
See, it's THAT BIT THERE that makes me have a bit of trouble with the whole returning to the Crows deal, and the epilogue of (possibly) taking over the guild. In DA:O when Zev takes control of the Crows in the US you have that line about him not knowing if he's 'won or lost'. I suppose if he does it after DA:A with his love at his side it could be counted as a 'win', but I'm not convinced...
I don't mind the idea of him going to Antiva to 'talk' the guild into leaving him and the GW the hell alone, I don't mind the GW going after him to cut a bloody swath through Antiva City, but I have a very hard time seeing Zevran becoming the guildlord (or whatever) because it lands him back in the gilded cage. Fortunately the epilogue only has that outcome as 'rumour'.

Alright, odd question. I came across a new published story on ffnet about Nathaniel/Cousland. This story is eerily alike mine in certain aspects (like the same words used for certain things). This person had me fav'd ten days ago and now doesn't. How do y'all handle cases of possible copying? Part of me feels flattered that someone thought of enough of something I wrote to want to use it, but at the same time, I'm a little miffed.
I'd be miffed too, honestly. But like klara said, we write fan fiction, so it's a slippery slope to be irritated on. XD
I know there's some copying of my stuff around, and I think I get more irritated at reviews that say "omg I loved this bit" than the actual copying itself.
You *could* get some of your readers to review this mysterious copycat and leave words akin to "Hmm...this story is remarkably similar to xxx."

Shadow, I agree I don't see Zev going to Antiva to become head of the Crows. That doesn't track with me. Getting them to leave him and the GW alone, yes.

Someone I don't know actually already did that very thing. I guess for now I'll just wait and see what happens.
@Gil thanks for offering but I am just going to drop it for now and hope my passive aggressive 'I put an alert on your story. I'm watching you!' tactic does some good.

What in The Stolen Throne did Maric promise/give Flemeth? Some say he's Morrie's dad but the dates don't pan out. Not to intervene in the Wilds and leave it as Flemeth's domain? A blood sacrifice, Katriel?

Replying politely is a good start. Give yourself permission to have a bit of a whine and a moan. Then go read all the reviews from reviewers that tell you that they loved it. Since WC is complete now, you can't really incorporate anything they said, if it happened to be constructive in any way. Don't let it get you down, love. I enjoyed WC very much.
Oh and the person who trashed it never reviewed again, I take that as a compliment.

I respond politely and explain my reasons. I've had someone comment on my treatment of Anora in 'Duty' and I had to point out that I was writing via the PoVs of the characters and not my own personal PoV. In that particular 'story', the characters didn't really like her.
That's about all you can do is explain politely. You can't please all the people all the time. But I know, it's hard. You see those type of reviews and your brain starts to get all niggly on you.
