So "grey wardens don't meddle in political affairs", that's like saying a church only concerns itself with matters spiritual... That may be the theory but practice many, many times is very different.... Sophia Dryden springs to mind using the grey wardens' powerbase in Ferelden to attack her rival King Arlan. Where does politics begin or end anyway? Seen from a certain POV everything is political even the personal... Naughty Maria13, I haven't read the Warden Commander but certainly if your plot points are well developed, I wouldn't let this bother me too much. As to dealing with criticism... Well the other day someone told me my story was being let down by bad grammar so I asked her to beta and she rocks... Might just use her again. Cheer up darling, you're fine!

I think the whole "grey wardens don't interfere in political affairs" went out the window during the blight - at least in Ferelden!

Thanks for all of your responses. The reviewer said they thought it was sweet and interesting and went from there ;/. Ho hum. Mind it doesnt sound as bizarre and downright rude as your reviewer, Gil.

I tried to make sure that what I wrote made sense within the story in so far as I could. Ah well, what you say is true Tas, you can't please all of the people.

And I'll let you off for not reading the story Maria, you made some good points :). I'm going to go have some quadruple chocolate cookies, perhaps they'll help :)

Thanks :)

Riordan makes a point of talking about how the First Warden is hip-deep in politics. The Wardens practically run the Anderfels. I think their constant saying they don't meddle in politics is one of those ideals they don't often live up to.

And, politics can impact them as well. Loghain was able to keep the Wardens from Orlais out of Ferelden, and the whole order was banished from Ferelden for 200 years. They gave in to the demands of the monarchy at Ostagar. Duncan and Alistair both say things about not abusing conscription and going along with the orders of the king since the Wardens' position in Ferelden is so tenuous after being banished for so long. Technically they don't have to listen to the king, they could just say the Wardens won't fight until their own reinforcements are there, but in that case angering the monarchy would have hurt them.

I suspect that the 'bow to no king' thing is more a general guideline. They literally bow to Maric in The Calling, and could just as easily have conscripted Loghain forcing him to go with them instead of asking for his help.

I guess I'm lucky, I've never really had a bad review. I've had a couple that offered up some constructive criticism, but I mention on my profile I welcome that. In one case I reread the chapter in question and realized they were right, in another I just explained my reasoning.

I was getting a TON of demanding reviews for a bit, though. For some reason a few people decided I needed to turn my story into some kind of Zevran/Anders/Amell love triangle. I had a few people reviewing every single chapter or mailing me asking when Zevran would show up. I suppose they stopped reading or gave up when I went more than thirty chapters without him making an appearance.

Man, why would you want Zevran when you can have Anders? I mean - Anders is sexy AND has magic :).

(sorry Zev. I love you like a brother, but the romance thing doesn't work for me)

That's right. The Wardens need the monarchs approval. They got banned from Ferelden once and probably wouldn't want to risk this again. Plus, the Warden Commander of Ferelden is also the Arl of Amaranthine (to think Alistair could end up in this position amuses me to no end, Anora is going to have kittens!).

So the Wardens have to walk a fine line and are in no way neutral in Ferelden.

Of course they meddle in politics! That rule is more like a guideline really... look to the Andefels, or Sophia. ROFL! I go with it being like the Pirates's Code. Something they have down on the books but doesn't always happen that way.

I just enjoy reading other fanfics and I think I'm too laid back. I'm happy to let the author get on with the story the way they want. If it starts to lose track or get ridiculous I might stop reading but I don't question the way it goes. I think some people need to take a chill pill. Although you might put suggestions in if they are good ones, changing the entire way a story goes just to please a small proportion of your readership seems unwarranted to me. (I'm using lots of big words, I blame Teagan, he's starting to get to me! ;)).

Although I do appreciate everyone of those people who take the time and effort to read the story in the first place and those who review. I just think if they want completely different people in the story or a 180 degree turn around, perhaps they should write their own...

And I agree Miri - Anders over Zev any day. Although Zev's good looking, I wouldn't trust him as far as I could chuck him... :)

Oh and I've heard back from my reviewer, they agreed with my POV - hurrah! :)

The hubby just reminded me of a quote from JK Rowling. Apparently after the third book in the Harry Potter series, someone complained that 'someone in the book had died' which had upset their daughter. They asked that there would be no more deaths please and as JK Rowling said 'I'm not taking dictation here. If you don't want anymore deaths, stop reading now.'

Hehe. See, that's why I get annoyed at people for trying to change other people's plot. If you don't like it, don't read it! Just because in Fanfic you actually have the opportunity to communicate with the author while they write doesn't mean you have control over what they write.

I'm open to criticism - like "I don't think this part was believable" or "you have truly appalling grammar" or even "what's your character's motivation here, it isn't clear" but "Anders and Neria should do this or it won't be a good story..."

Nup. B*gger off mate :).

The Wardens may technically be neutral, but they still have to play the game in order to have support from the various nations. And yes, the First Warden sounds to be the biggest hypocrite in this area, so I think that would make the lot of them a lot more political than they may preach on the surface.

The game also makes sure that we see the differences between the "fairy tale idealized" Wardens and the real life ones. I think the neutrality may fall more under the idealized Wardens than the real ones.

I have a reader who is way, way, waaaaay too invested in my MC's love life. She super friendly and keeps to PMs, but it's disconcerting. I'm almost ready to tell her that, unless she's going to at least offer non-ship criticism, I'm going to block her.

The one who is afraid Brand might go for Alistair again?

I had someone review the description of a story once and send me a review about that and how the description itself wasn't fitting (not to the story but to canon mind you).

I've found that even if we do have an established world to write in, there are going to be varying perspectives out there about certain aspects of the world of DA. Write the story you want to write and just be done with it :) Ultimately if you are not happy with the story, what is the point of writing it?

It's not like any of us are doing this for the money :P

No, that's nothing. This person is someone who acts like the world is going to end every time Brand interacts with Alistair (she called him a homewrecker:crying:). I like it when people express their preference, but there are limits to these things.

I don't mind how Surely does it - I've got my little Anders/Alistair smut on the side :). I can write that for myself... or if not write it, then fantasize about it...

Oh, I have a pile of excised smut that I keep in a folder entitled "Awesome" that I plan on working into another story once Undertow is finished. There are other things in there (like a wonderfully contentious two page dialogue between Alistair and Anders about how Anders became a Warden), but it's mostly dedicated to sexing and sexy talk that I can't work in.

Gah, I'm so grateful I didn't get PMs during the Hunt about people's 'preferences'...although there were reviews that declared there would be tears/disappointment if the Warden ended up with whoever.

This.

But it does sometimes feel like the pressure is on when 'the crowd' is rooting for a particular direction. Stick to your guns, peeps. :)

I freakin' love that movie.
