I am using a USB Creative X-Fi Soundblaster Arena headset.  The positional sound using CMSS-3D in most games, including ME1, is brilliant.

The trick is to make sure to tell the game to run in 5.1 sound, because it's impossible to do through windows.  Some games (games with REAL pc support) like Left 4 Dead 2 is very simple: just go to audio properties in game and select 5.1.  There is no feature like this in ME2, nor was there in ME1.  But there were .INI tweaks in the first game to set it up properly.

But now that the game has gone from using ISACT audio to Wwise audio engine, I can no longer force surround sound.  In fact, NO ONE seems to know how to manipulate WwiseAudioSettings (this can be found in Coalesced.ini).

Seriously, I'm stuck here.  Throw WwiseAudioSettings into google and you get two (yes, TWO!) total results.

Anybody at all know how to force as many channels as I want?

I think ME2 uses Windows control panel settings determining what speaker setup you are using. Try setting that to 5.1 or such and rerun Mass Effect config. See what it detects it as. Save and exit.

I have my control panel set up as Quadraphonic and have CMSS3D-Headphone virtualize this to my Sennheiser HD600 headphones. Surround seems to work fine enough. Not as good as ME1 though, but it had hardware accelerated soundcard support anyway.
