Problem:
After performing initial installation of Mass Effect 2 and running the configuration tool, the game will not start.  When you click Play in the game launcher, the screen goes black, as if starting, then returns to Windows after 1-2 seconds.  Two Windows dialog boxes pop up one after another, stating:

MassEffect.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x7c90100b" referenced memorty at "0x08ec7c50".  The memorty could not "read".
and
MassEffect2.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x00e03efa" referenced memorty at "0x08ec7cd8".  The memorty could not "read".

Steps taken to resolve:
-Re-installed game
-Updated latest video drivers [EDIT: nv4_disp.dll 196.21 [6.14.11.9621]]
-Installed latest Windows XP updates
-Re-installed DirectX using version that came on ME2 DVD
-Attempted running using Default game settings
-Attempted running using modified game settings (ie, changed resolution, bloom, shadows)

System Specs:
-AMD Phemon 9600 Quad-Core 2.3 GHz
-2GB Physical Memory
-3.8GB Page File Memory
-NVidia GeForce 8600 GT 1GB (x2 in SLI configuration)
-DirectX 9.0c (Mar2009) or later
-62GB Free Space on installed drive (D:\\\\), three times than on C:\\\\ drive
-Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_qfe.090804-1435)
[EDIT:  Now have Service Pack 3]
-Hard Copy (DVD) of Mass Effect 2 Collector's Edition

More steps taken to resolve:
-Tried launching game directing from MassEffect2.exe file
-Installed game to C:/ drive instead of D:/
-Ignored Mass Effect 2 and played XCom 3 on DosBox in a mocking, sarcastic manner while staring at the ME2 game box accusingly

More steps taken to resolve:
-Uninstalled game again, uninstalled graphics drivers/devices, uninstalled PhysX, shut down anything even remotely related to a firewall, virus scanner, or virtual device (ie, Alcohol 120%, Daemon Toolz, Hamachi, etc)
-Reinstalled game, then reinstalled latest video drivers again.  Game installed PhysX off DVD during installation.
-Ran game config utility
-Attempted to run game--same error, only this time the screen turned black (as if starting the game) for about 3-4 seconds, as if it was taunting me.  Bastard.
-Gave monitor the finger (although it was hardly its fault, really) and told my console-playing friend (who's already beaten the game) to go to hell.
-Drank a Guiness and settled down for some good ol' Fallout 2.

Gettin tired of this:
-Uninstalled PhysX and reinstalled it using latest version from Nvidia's website
-Noticed that there was a Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, and for some reason my Autoupdate didn't catch it, so I got it and installed it.
-Still no worky.
-Why are you mad at me, Bioware?  What did I do wrong?  I've always bought your games, I even get collector's edition when ever I can spare the money.  Between Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, I have enough cloth maps on my wall (and one paper one) to cover the entire Sword Coast.  Death's Hand is silently watching over my guinea pig cage, protecting them from harm.  Did I not buy enough merchandise?  Do... do you need me to buy the console version of your games, too?  Please, just tell me what you want me to do!  Do you have a volcano I can sacrifice virgins in?  Or maybe... maybe you just can't hear me... maybe you don't even exist at all...  All my life has been a lie...

On a whim, I installed Mass Effect 1 again, just to make sure it still works. It does. Dragon Age still works, as well. I completely wiped out the PhysX stuff (used Revo Uninstaller, and a registry cleaner) and then reinstalled it cleanly from Nvidia again. Didn't help. I am officially out of ideas.

i'm in the same boat mate, had collectors edition sicne launch, and yet to get into the game.

Have Phenom Quad 9950, with 8GB, NVidia 9800GTX+ (latest 196.21), X-Fi Titanium and Win 7 64 bit, and have the exact same issue. My ME1 and Dragon Age work just fine, as do my other games.

Only thing i would add is to try and add another 2GB RAM to your system, XP will only see about 3-3.5, but it will max out your systems capability and allow you to use multiple apps better.

I almost wonder if it's a problem related to the game working with AMD... I seem to recall ME1 having issues at launch with AMD. Or maybe it was just multi-core processors. Can't remember now.

You're right about the memory, though, I've been meaning to grab a couple more sticks, but just never get around to it :(

Scouring the Interweblogospherenet, I found someone suggesting that the problem may be in not having admin rights. I'm the only user of this computer and I'm the admin, though, so I don't think that's it in my case... :(

I tried doing the 'ol 'Run As' routine on the MassEffect2.exe, because, hell, I got nothing better to do, but since I'm telling it to run it as myself (administrator) it didn't really do much good. In fact, I think I just gave my computer an anxiety attack.

What solved that for me was a result of the stupidest bug.

If you have multiple DVD roms on your computer (and/or virtual programs):

*Uninstall the game completley, including the my-documents folder.

*Uninstall the virtual DVD drive program.

*Disable DVDs so that only 1 remains.

*Reinstall the game as usual.

That worked perfectly for me :-)

Ok, so get this. Even though the game keeps saying it's installing successfully, my game directory is only about 9.5GB, when it should be about 11GB. SOMETHING is not getting installed, even though the installer says everything was peachy. I guess I'll just start manually extracting the compressed files into my install directory, and see what happens.

Whoa, perfect timing on that post! I actually just got it to work by manually extracting the .rar files from the second DVD into the install directory! Now it's back up to 11-ish GB! You're absolutely right, though, about it being multiple DVD drives, I'm sure of it. When I installed the game, I put the first disk in one drive, then, when it wanted the second disk, it made me put it in the OTHER drive. I didn't think much of it, though, because it still said it installed successfully. Holy crap. Ok ok ok, I gotta go play now. :D

So un-installing ALL virtual drives, might actually fix this? That's a new thing I haven't tried. Can't wait to get home tonight and try it. Fingers crossed.

Uninstall virtual drives and disable physical drives (leave only 1!!)
