I admit to being somewhat confused on this subject.  I was at first under the impression that most small arms used a universal Thermal Clip.  Indeed, I'm still in the dark about which weapon uses which ammo.  I know Heavy Weapons use different ammo, but does a SMG use different ammo to a HP?  I noticed that some ammo you find is red, while others are white and (I think) some are blue. What weapons do these colours correspond to? Thanks in advance for any informative replies, and please, use this thread to discuss the subject at length. It could be a handy resource for people in the same boat as me.

The red ones are ammo thats dropped by enemies, blue ones are ammo that the game gives you...I think. I say this because I only see those blue ammo near health kits and weapon switching stations etc.

So if it's all the same why do people complain that a weapon only has 12 rounds, or that ammo for a certain weapon is hard to find, so stick with weapon X?

All the normal weapons use the same 'ammo': thermal clips. When you pick one up it is distributed differently to all weapons, that's why they have different capacities and you can't transfer between weapons. For heavy weapons it's the same, just not with thermal clips but energy cells.

You can also bring back the ME1 system with cooldown :-)

There are different coloured clips, I think they just hold more ammo. I picked up a white clip from a Harbinger and it gave me 350 Revenant bullets.

All clips are the same, but if you run out of ammo for several weapons and you pick a clip up, it's distributed to the weapon you are actually holding. If it has full ammo, I don't know the distribution, but I guess it starts with the light weapons.

It's often a problem for the infiltrator. You need you the sniper rifle to have max ammo, but you usually have the pistole equipped when picking up clips. So the ammo clips you pick up will first be distributed to your pistol. Just equip the x98 Sniper rifle before picking up clips.

In my experience when you pick up a clip it adds ammo to all your weapons, not just to the one you are using at that moment.

I'll confirm what Kronner said. I've been using my Sniper Rifle a lot more lately, and I run out of ammo for it very quickly, since it''s the first Sniper Rifle you get. I then switch to my Assault Rifle and go to town with it. When the fight is over, I pick up Ammo Clips with my Assault Rifle out, and switch to my Sniper Rifle to load the round I just got when I picked up the Thermal Clip.

As for colors, I've never seen any different colors of ammo, but that might be something that never made it to the 360 version.

The only color I've ever seen for thermal clips for the 360 id red.

They way they do it is that all the ammo spread out seperately through your weapons if you're low on ammo. If you just use the rifle the whole game you'll collect a lot more on one clip you find. If you deplete your assault rifle, sniper, shotgun and pistol in one battle (means you suck) one clip will distribute throughout your weapons evenly based on their ammo percentage.

But that's just speculation, don't hold me on this.

Some different ammo packs do show up, but only towards the very end of the game. At the final boss, for instance, Harbinger will drop Heavy Weapons ammo clips.

I realized this while replaying the Grunt recovery mission hours ago. Had some fun switching between the assault rifle and sniper rifle to take down blue suns thugs, but as the sniper rifle rounds came to depletion I ran over several clips on the floor - some restored the assault rifle ammo, some did it to the sniper - and all of them were red. Any ideas?

I'm on PC and I've only ever seen red. Picking up any thermal clip for me automatically reloads all my weapons. Not completely, mind you. Only by the same amount it would replenish if you had that weapon in your hand.

Note that thermal clips only restore your reserve ammo. If you have a partial clip in any gun, walking over a clip will never "top off" your ammo. You have to eject the partial clip to get back up to full ammo with the next clip you pick up.

Wow, kudos to all of you for resurrecting this thread! To settle this, I believe the thermal clips are all white with a bit of red at each end. However I think the clip models are environment-mapped so that they reflect the ambient lighting of each map. So, on the recruit Mordin mission they look red, and on the MSV Strontium Mule they look blue. All clips that potentially replenish ammo (that is, if you need to reload) will flash white. They don't flash at all if you have full ammo and don't need to reload (lucky you!).

Really? I've picked up normal red clips and found engery cells for heavy weapons in crates, never really had a problem running out...

Also.... my sentinel totally discovered the joys of the collector ray gun and the missile launcher :)

The blue Power Cells boxes not only increases the amount of Heavy Weapon ammo you're carrying, they also restore your regular weapons to full...somehow.

Regular enemies drop ammo clips that give you ammo for all of your guns.

The blue crates restore ammo 100% and give you heavy weapon ammo.

Harbringer drops heavy weapon ammo in the final boss fight of the game.

Christina Norman:

Mass Effect 2 doesn't have limited ammo clips. I'm pretty sure some of the devs went over that at some point. ;)

Yeah, you guys are gonna be hearing that for a while. All in good fun.
