After saving Jack from Purgatory, I get stuck in the comm room after Jack and Miranda leave. I can't open the door and I can't talk to EDI as the reticle doesn't appear. I managed to work around this by opening the menu, then returning to the game, which makes the reticle briefly appear for around 1 second.
The problem is Kelly informs me that the Illusive man wants to talk me and I can't use the galaxy map until I talk to him but when I try to return to the comm room the door won't open because the reticle doesn't appear. After entering the comm room via the workaround (opening and closing the menu so the reticle will appear), nothing happens and I'm unable to talk to the Illusive man. All I see is a hologram of the Normandy.
I've tried reloading the area (by going to a different deck then back to the CIC), reloading the save, exiting the game and launching it again, and even restarting my computer but I still can't talk to the Illusive man. I've wasted several hours scanning all the planets that are available to me and purchasing all the available upgrades as well so I really want to continue this playthrough instead of starting all over again.
Does anyone know how to work around this?

I've replayed the purgatory mission twice and still get the same results. The conversation with Illusive man still isn't triggered.
It looks like a flag wasn't set or unset earlier. My character was imported from a level 60 Infiltrator in ME1. The order of squad members recruited was Mordin, Garrus, Grunt, and Jack. All currently available systems are 100% explored and planets were mined until depletion.
I'll start another playthrough but I'll recruit Jack before Grunt this time to check if it still happens.

The conversation with the Illusive man isn`t triggered automatically, you have to initiate it by interacting with the table (as if you were talking to EDI in the briefing room). The workaround you`ve found should allow you to do that.
A lot of people have been having the same problem in general, the inablity to interact because the target doesn`t highlight, myself included. Aside from opening and closing the menu, some people have found that running the program windowed at the minimum resolution helps.

If you can't highlight an object to interact with, like the comm room door or the communication device, it's usually because of bad framerates. Bad framerates are caused by slow hardware and/or running on high resolutions that your hardware can't handle. The game needs a decent framerate to work properly.
