A few days ago I found a thread here where somebody had a problem with ME2 freezing and showing graphical artifacts, most notably green pixels all over the screen in some kind of pattern. He even posted a screenshot.

Starting today, all over sudden I have that very problem and can't find the thread anymore. Does anybody happen to know where it is (a link would be helpful) or if the issue had been resolved there?

Almost definitely a graphics card or driver issue. When my last graphics card failed, it started overheating and showed green pixels while running 3D games. Make sure you aren't overclocking anything and your system is clean of dust. Also, check temps and update to latest graphics driver.

strange how many videocards are faulty only when playing Mass Effect 2, even on the lowest settings and resolution

Just saying

You're right, that's precisely what it looks like, but it makes no sense. Why would the game run fine for over a week (with quite a few x-hours-straight hardcore sessions) and then freeze up 10 minutes after starting my computer? That doesn't really seem to be overheating and I haven't changed any drivers since the last time I played.

The only thing I did change were a few BIOS settings, in an attempt to solve another issue (not with the game), but I changed them all back.

I had a similar issue when ME1 came out, my screen would lock up with a green/red block pattern on Eden Prime. My solution back then was to play on medium settings and it played fine (the graphics weren't too bad either).

I've worked in IT for a long time now...and I have seen many failed graphics cards. Take the advice for what it is worth (or not). Good luck!

Another reboot later (to recheck the BIOS settings, which were all as before) it works fine again.

Who else thinks this is strange? :-)

Yeah I've been having this problem as well but it's only ever happened on one planet and I'm about half way through the game. I checked the card temp and it's not overheating it's annoying because you never know when it's going to happen again

Could it have been some other software running on your system that was buggered?  The reboot might of resolved it fixing your issue.

This is about what I did: This morning, when I booted up, I changed the BIOS. Then I surfed the web (shortly), left Firefox open and started the game, just as I always do. Feeze. Reboot, this time no FF, freeze. Reboot, contacted EA who suggested I use admin mode and compatibility mode because they haven't heard of something called "Win 7 x64". Didn't do that, but remembered the BIOS change and changed the options back instead. Reboot, freeze. Then I searched the web for a solution and posted this, rebooted again to re-check the BIOS and (miracle!) this time it worked. Played an hour or two without problems so far, I only lost all my achievements during one of the crashes, but besides that, it works just like the other day.

So, theoretically, it could be related to some other software, sure. But since it worked and now again works flawlessly without any special precautions, all autostarts and Firefox are pretty much ruled out, aren't they?

I had almost this exact same instance occur to me. There was the weirdest graphical corruptions and everyone kept saying how it was my video card. Yet I rebooted everything and not even five minutes later it was as if nothing even happened. Tell me where did everybody get their error at? I had my happen right after getting back from Freedom's Progress after the first mission. I have heard many people have had this corruption happen around this time and at another instance later in the game.

I don't think, it was related to specific points. I was about halfway through the game and it never happened twice at the same point.

It's only been happening with me on Illium, the first was during a conversation with a woman from Zhu's hope from ME1 and then after a restart during Miranda's loyalty mission. The annoying thing is I had the exact same problem with Dragon Age but fixed it and I can't remember what I did

Forget what I said about it being resolved... it just happened again and this time (thats new afaik) in the main menu, before I clicked *anything*...

I don't really get it either. I played all the way through the game with one crash. That was dragging the icon and now I get these strange crashes, typically when a cut scene dialog occurs. It's somewhat random though it can crash at the exact same spot everytime as I had in Jack's escape sequence. I would think with a graphics over heat issue it would be totally random, not in certain situations.

I have been getting this same problem, it looks like the video card is going to die or something, so i quit the game and then restart my computer and its like nothing happened. this is the only game to do this so far on my system.

Processor: AMD Phenom™ 8400 Triple-Core Processor (3 CPUs), ~2.1GHz

Mine freezes (except for the sound) at the cutscene for the Omega 4 relay.  Its happened 3 times in a row.  The game has run fine otherwise (except for a tiny bit of stutter in some cutscenes).   Its not an overheating graphics card and the computer specs ought to run the game fine.

Anyone know where I can contact tech support direct?

I will say this...I played through the game with the 9.12 Catalyst drivers from ATI with not a crash. I updated to the 10.1 drivers and it does crash now, occasionally. I was going to fight through it and try 10.2 when they are released this month.

I've completely taken my computer apart today and then put it back together, including Windows. Some problems I've had with other stuff have disappeared already and I suspect that ME2 will run fine again (installing right now). However, since I've modified my cooling, put in some more parts and switched the slot in which my graphics card sits, I can't say for sure, whether my bug was software-related or bad hardware. I'd stick with software, because ME2 was the only program where the issue occured - dying parts would affect them all.

Just for reference, these are the core parts of my system:

Windows 7 x64 Professional
Phenom II X4 810
Geforce 9800 GT, passified, now re-actified with a fan
4 GB RAM
X-Fi sound card

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but I just started having this exact same issue since yesterday.

My system specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium x32 (SP2)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.00GHz

Geforce 8800 GT (running the latest 197.45 drivers)

6GB RAM

SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio (basically the on-board sound shipped with the PC)

Running DirectX 11

Patch 1.01 installed, all DLCs installed except for the Incisor Rifle.

My issue is that I can run ME2 for about 5 minutes with no problems, before the screen goes all blurry/grainy with large green or white spots in vertical patterns and my entire system freezes. Sometimes this freeze is accompanied by black 'blanking' of parts of the screen. The entire computer becomes unresponsive and has to be rebooted.

It doesn't seem to matter where I am or what I'm doing in the game; I can be talking to NPCs, engaged in combat, on the galaxy map, or even in the menu. The crash occurs regardless.

I doubt that it's my graphics card dying, since it has no issues (no strange colours or artefacts) when I'm just web surfing or doing work on the computer, and will happily run for hours with no problems. It's not likely to be an issue with heat either, since I had Speedfan running during the latest test and it only got up to around 76 degrees Celsius before it crashed. From experience in the past, it's gotten hotter than that and still went on merrily without any issues. I also never overclock stuff, so that isn't a problem.

Although I'd updated my graphic card drivers about a week before, ME2 ran with no problems until yesterday. The only significant change I can remember is installing the Equaliser pack the day before (and I was still able to enjoy ME2 that same night), but I can't imagine that being the cause of the crashes. I'd be interested to know if anybody else who installed the Equaliser pack is having similar issues though.

Any ideas, anyone? I'm dying for my ME2 fix, and having to reboot my computer every 5 mins is intolerable... :(

Although the graphical anomalies would seen more appropriately blamed on the video hardware, the "freeze" aspect is contradictory, so I would see what other thermal sensors are reporting, and I would compare your PSU's 12V output in Amps against your video card's requirements.

From Speedfan again, the other thermal sensors are reporting:

System: 40C (I remember it went up to about 45C when playing ME2)

CPU: 21C (about 30C when playing ME2)

Core 0: 32C

Core 1: 32C

I'm not exactly sure what is the amp output of my PSU (it's a Antec ATX EarthWatts 500W), but according to the thermal and power specs of the GeForce 8800GT, it recommended a minimum 400W. (I also noticed that the maximum temperature of the card is 105C, so I think that further rules out heat that's causing the issue.)

UPDATE: I've tried running another game, Guild Wars, and while it lasted longer without crashing, it ultimately also had the strange dots (only this time they were purple!) appearing on the screen, the sound stuttering and the system becoming completely unresponsive.

So it's not a problem with ME2 itself, and from studying the Windows Performance and Reliability monitors, no issues are being reported even during these crashes (the only things that are turning up are 'Windows had an unexpected shutdown", which is probably me hitting the reset button on the computer. I'm still inclined to think that drivers are the culprit here, but why would they work flawlessly for almost a week before issues arose?

I've already tried turning down graphical settings in the game and not running ME2 using MassAffinity (the load times are intolerable!), but neither approach has yielded any benefits.

I'm going to try a System Restore to a point before I installed the latest nVidia drivers (197.45) and also refrain from installing the Equaliser Pack, see if that helps anything.

That's just about the best idea I would have been able to offer at this point, as well!

While im trolling the me2 forums (helped 1 person yay)

Does your motherboard have a good northbridge cooler Zaxares? I had issues like this if I remember correctly on a motherboard whose northbridge gave out.(then of coure pcie slot don't work)

I would suggest underclocking the card and seeing what happens. Maybe down about 100 or so from stock. Just to test.

Evga prescion tool(works on all makes) http://www.evga.com/precision/

Also I see noone has suggested a driver rollback... although I guess you said issues came up a week later...
