Everyone says something different, but til now noone is really knowing what is working.
Because: Do you anywhere see a Armor-Rating for your char?
In the Squad Screen? No
When getting damaged? No. Just a red and blue Bar.

Playable characters do not have an Armor bar.mcramladu wrote...
The description of Fortitude says it adds an amount of armor equivalent to a percentage of your shields, it never says it adds to your shields.
Also, I'm pretty sure your defenses are layered in the same way as enemies: Barrier > Shield > Armor > Health.
Fortification, Barrier, Geth Shield Boost and Tech Armor double your shields (if you picked the 100% option). You can check on the level up screen.
Fortification and barrier are exactly the same

Because it seems there is only Health+Shields for Characters, the different Defensive Powers are working completely the same.
Thus Geth-Shield has as the only onesome Damage Extra as option, while Barrier and Fortitude are working the same.

I'll have plenty of stuff to choose from whenever I play through with a new class, but Reave is definitely on the short list, from comments I've read in this forum.

I agree with this completely.SonsofNorthWind wrote...
Depends on your class.
IMO, Engineer doesn't want to interrupt the chain of drone spam / weapon fire, and the 12 second cooldown on shields = 4 drone cooldowns, which is likely to provide significantly better protection. I find ammo powers, and particularly Armor Piercing ammo, more useful for classes which are going to be spamming abilities that have defensive applications already (Engineer, Infiltrator), as you minimize your opportunity cost in lost cooldowns by having an ammo power. Sentinel also has a superior version already, and the cooldown is painful enough on that.
Geth shield would be a solid choice for a Soldier, though, and possibly Adept and Vanguard.
On my Infiltrator, I go for Ammo Piercing Rounds. Warp Ammo might be more versatile but I find specialization trumps versatility. I'd rather use Miranda's Warp for Barriers, and optimize my sniper rifle ammo for shieds and health.

I originally picked Geth shield boost as a Sentinel. What a mistake - with the recharge time it was not practical to use both the tech armor and geth shields at the same time, and I'm not even sure they both work at the same time either. Was totally redundant Ended up using Reave instead.

I really think inferno grenade is probably the best all-around bonus power. Its great against armor, has an area effect, and its a grenade which can be tossed over cover unlike any other power. If the enemy has no health it can also catch them on fire which paralyzes them for a few seconds while they try to put out the flame. It will just fulfill a role in any class you pick. Doesn't mean thats the best one for every class though.

Inferno Grenade serves no purpose on the Infiltrator because we already have something almost identical called incinerate.

You have no clue do you? Every power can be curved over cover or around corners, if anything this is the worst power at it, since it doesn't have auto aim.Spire7 wrote...

I admit I really hadn't considered incinerate. They are very similar. I guess no matter which power you choose there will always be some class that already has something like it anyway - the trick is to just pick something that can be the most useful with your particular class.AoiSakuraba wrote...

I'm not saying that you can't curve other powers around corners. But there are many times where the auto-aim cannot reach an enemy no matter how you angle your shot. The dumb-fire nature of the grenade allows you to hit places that you otherwise might not be able to do. Its just my opinion that with good aim this can often be more useful than the auto-aim. If you disagree with that, then thats fine, just don't use it.mundus66 wrote...

I have a bit of a strange build, with throw field (yes, I actually use throw on insanity, and use it a lot - it does wacky things like toss entire groups off platforms, and disarm (literally) LOKI mechs after I warp their armor off), heavy warp, power armor, guardian and area reave, and just a single point in overload.

Depends what I am specking my character for my Adept Reave/Barrier was preferable
My Sentinel I gave Warp rounds, but might switch it for energy drain later
same, though it was a hard decision between that and inferno grenade

Geth Shield Boost, Barrier, and Fortification do the same thing (with the slight difference that Geth Shield Boost can be evolved to increase damage). They do NOT put different types of defenses on as far as I know. They just add to the shields or barrier that you've already got.
However, the difference really is that Geth Shield Boost is a tech power, Barrier is a biotic power, and Fortification is just a power. The result is that research upgrades that lower tech/biotic cooldowns and increase durations affect Geth Shield Boost and Barrier, but not Fortification. Thus, in the end, Fortification ends up worse than the other two.

I think it should be noted that Fortification should never be taken.

Good info
Reave, Energy Drain, Geth Shield are my favorites to use myself.
