Sounds plausible enough. I was hoping for a Return of the Jedi-like epic space battle with all the races of the galaxy working together to destroy them.

And I strongly suspect this is what you are going to get. But, in addition to that, there will have to be some kind of "ultimate weapon" unleashed by the (purely) organics to destroy the reaper fleet. Perhaps some weakness we do not know of yet.

On a side note, I think that all the speculation about what will happen in 3 is great but all these notions that the Reapers are not the real threat are, IMO, a bit silly. I suppose anything is possible but it would be an unforgiveable mistake on BioWare's part to build up a colossal enemy over the first two episodes of a 3-part space opera and then discard them and go in another direction entirely in the final, epic chapter. It makes no sense.

I think there will be an epic battle on many worlds. On land, in the skies and in outer space. All of the species of the galaxy will unite against the reaper menace. And Shepard and his crew will have to fight some kind of centralised control or master reaper or whatever to throw the fleet into chaos and turn the battle in favor of the organics against impossible odds.

This. Either the geth, or we will encounter the last surviving "angel of light" that has been mentioned by other people that faught the "machine devils". It will give us the key to defeating the Reapers. Dark energy I think is a tool for the Reapers because it is present on Freedom's Progress. Veetor tells us this and if you watch in the background, you will see Harbinger's burning body obvserving the collectors working.

Where are the Angels of Light mentioned?

Edit: Besides Klencory, which is a tiny reference and also slightly different.

Also, possible ending:  Geth build their Dyson sphere, and Shepard and his team hide out in it until the keeper threat has passed... then rebuild civilization with a new race of hybrid human/quarian babies (and some mumbo-jumbo science about how this will work despite the existing mumbo jumbo science about different types of proteins).  Now they can rebuild the universe for sequels...

Actually, anything less than preserving the existing universe by beating the Reapers really limits Bioware's ability to do sequels and spin-offs with the existing lore.

I think the Shadow Broker will be influential/key in defeating the Reapers. We've only had hints of the power of TSB, and no one can say if it is even one person or a group. What if it is an AI that is almost as old as the Reapers, that has managed to hide, biding it's time, gathering knowledge on the Reapers? When the Reapers come, it goes into dormancy and reappears when they leave, continuing again with the society that arises next. It has been waiting for millenia for a generation of species that can stand against the Reapers, and now it has found that.

Dark energy converts suns into mass relays.

I've seen this on these forums a couple of times now, why? ../../../../images/forum/emoticons/wondering.png

Well, there are several reasons  that might lead people to this speculation, all mainly based on Tali's recruitment quest on Haestrom.
a) Haestrom's sun is becoming increasingly unstable and it is likely to "evolve" into a red giant in the near future.
B) Haestrom's sun actually is still very "young" so it shouldn't be unstable at all.
c) Tali's research has shown that dark energy inside the star seems to be responsible for the rapid "ageing" of the sun.
d) Dark energy is the energy tied to all types of mass effect fields - biotics, FTL drives and mass relays among them.
e) The Reapers are the suspected creators of the Citadel and the relay network so they should have a superior knowledge about dark energy and its uses.
f) The Reapers have to come up with a new plan to enter the galaxy.

So if we combine those things and assume that the entire Reaper strategy to enter the galaxy is/was based on using the Citadel's secret mass relay and all attempts to open that relay so far have been foiled by Shepard, the Reapers need a different plan. So why not using their knowledge of dark energy to create a new mass relay?

That's at least one possible explanation if one wants to see the Haestrom event as important to the main story.
Another one would be that we could somehow turn that dying star into a weapon against the Reapers, of course. :)

Seems quite far fetched that they're distantly influencing a star so that it turns into a gateway (the entrance/exit of which should likely show up at a random location no?). There is also the problem that a mass relay is technology (complex enough that no council race knows how they work), not a natural phenomena.
And lastly i'm fairly confident the Reapers are flying towards the galaxy at the end of ME2, and we can't honestly know if it's going to take them a long time to get there or not. So would they even need a plan?

Well it also seems quite far fetched for many people that Harbinger is controlling the Collector General and his fellow Collector drones over that vast distance yet that's what he was apparently doing in ME2. :)
Besides, there still are many things about the relays we simply don't know. Why are they so immensely powerful to transport an entire fleet over a possibly unlimited distance (given, with accuracy penalty)? Where do they get the energy to do that and to run for millions of years? Why are they resilient enough to withstand a supernova (see the relay to Ilos)? I hope we get all the answers in ME3.

See my Theory is that near the end of ME3, The Reapers will lock out the Mass Effect Relays and the Normandy will be the only ship able to use them thanks to EDI being able to extrapolate the new IFF Codes by scanning the Relays. This Leaves the Normandy as the Galaxy's last hope of stopping the reapers, and Keeps the "Shepard is our only hope of Saving the Galaxy" premise.

The theory about the star that turns into a wormhole/mass relay is kinda null and void since the codex explains that the star in question started dying prematurely even before the quarians were driven out by the geth.

Which means 300 years +.

Its not like it started dying the week after sovereign died.

And if sovereign was still alive back then why would the reapers need another gateway? Doesnt make sense

See now i could get all technical ans **** but i just want to keep it simple. From the end of number 2 it looks like its gonna be one hell of a scrap in number 3 but i reckon with enough ships, firepower, and really really really big guns we can just blast there ass back into dark space, simple isnt it :)

This is the most simple and basic theory, but also the most plausible one in my eyes. I think the current Mass Effect situation demands a solution like this, I can't think of any other way to defeat the reapers without comming up with extremely far-fetched theories.

I think with the reaper IFF and eventually the collector's base, Cerberus (or Shepard's team) will find a way to shield themselves from the reaper indoctrination, allowing them to enter a reaper ship without losing their mind, so they can plant a virus that the geth created to alter the reapers behavior and/or selfdestruct them.

First there will be a huge space battle (if you have managed to recruit all the potential races, otherwise it will be a very quick battle/cutscene),
with the Turian Armada swooping in from the left,
the Quarian Fleet in the center, the Asari and Alliance Battlefleet attacking the Reapers from the right while sending in Krogan Kamikaze-Torpedoeships,
the Geth and Salarian fleet will arrive with the Volus Tradeships (as fodder in front) a lil bit later than the first Engagement, helping to (what it seems at first) turn the tide.

After a massive and exciting battle going back and forth with many casualties on both sides, it seems as the Reaper fleet is the dominant one and will be the victor, when suddenly,
the Hanar-Armada arrives (after quite a bit of persuading from Shep) with the slogan "Enkindle this!", flanking the Reaper-fleet, which will eventually be the trumping card.

With reading everyones theories I've came up with my own theory now that is a collection from other people's theories here.

This:

In ME1, Sovereign was obviously the vanguard of the reapers. They needed him to open a shortcut between their realm and our galaxy. Sovereign was defeated, so they needed a new vanguard. Harbinger created a plan B. Using the Collectors with his mind-control ability to create a new vanguard reaper. Harbinger chose humanity to become the new vanguard reaper. Again, the reapers failed and the reaper larva was destroyed.

In the meanwhile, the reapers have set course to our galaxy. No doubt a new reaper will come up with a new plan to gain quick entrance to our galaxy, but even if they don't find a solution, they'll still reach our galaxy within a certain time.

This extra time is crucial to us, because it allows us to prepare for the reaper attack. Shepard needs new allies, whole nations if he want to stand a chance against the reapers. The quarians, geth, krogan and maybe even Cerberus and the council will join forces with Shepard and help him to come up with an idea to stop the reapers.

Eventually, Shepard will come up with a plan. The plan is to face the reapers head on with a giant army, while in the meanwhile Shepard will infiltrate the mother ship of the reapers to upload an AI virus in the reaper system, with help from the geth. This virus will cause the reapers to shut down, or they'll self-destruct (maybe this can be a paragon - renegade option, with paragon only shutting them down and with renegade shutting them down and blowing them up).

Or we will see a humanoid reaper emerge from the invading reaper armada after years of war that has brought nothing but attrition to both sides, offering peace if Shepard sacrifices himself/herself.

And of course, that reaper would be the opposite gender for Shepard, knowing Bioware and their "obsession" for love interests....

Um, I'd rather say that it would be a renegade option to just "shut them down" (you could do bad things with them afterwards?), while you act like a paragon when you blow them up (to defeat them once and for all, compare it to the Collectors Base in ME2)

but what IF the Shadow Broker is a Reaper? there is a possibility of that. or there is a possibility, that Shepard will work for Shadow Broker in ME3 (i really doubt that Shepard will work for Alliance), thus making Liara unable to kill him.

as for beating the Reapers, it's got to connect with Shepard having plans of Harbinger (with the vent that leads to the core, being only few meters wide:P). also, some sr-3 would be nice. what makes me wonder,
however, is the fact that the Reapers are probably in such a distance from the nearest mass relay, that it will take them several years to invade galaxy.

The "dark space" were the Reapers are is not another realm or plane. Its just the space inbetween galaxies. AKA: "intergalactic space". :alien:

This post here is my opinion.  I don't think reapers are machines.  I think reapers are a form of dark energy that house themselves in a "machine"

In mass effect 2 you go to the derelict reaper.  There are journal pads in there. They tell about how the people change.  The people talk about how they see a grey face going through the walls.  IT also talks about how the reaper dreams even though the machine is destroyed.  The people were being indoctrinated even though the ship was destroyed.  EVen though the machine side was damaged or destroyed the energy was still being housed in the ship.  The reaper was still in it.

You go to the middle of the ship and you see a reaper core. It is dark energy. It is the same energy that drives the mass effect portals.  Once the core is destroyed the reaper is gone.

In mass effect 1, the reaper took over saren, because saren was implanted with technology that allowed him to be taken over. The reason the reaper was destroyed was beacuse the ship was completely blown up.  The energy core was destroyed.

Another thing is this.  Civilization hasn't opened all of the mass effect portals. Mass Effect 2 hints at they don't because they are affraid of finding another race like the racni(sorry for the spelling).  I am sure the reapers probably have a back up portal they can come through. We just don't know about it.  Do you think a race as advanced as the reapers would put their eggs in one basket with the citadel.

The key is going to lie in the visions shephard got from the portals in mass effect 1.  They are still maturing in his mind.  I think they will show him what works, and what doesn't work.  The protheans lasted pretty long against the reapers.

A full frontal assault will not work against the reapers.  They are going to have to figure out a way to destoy the reaper cores in the ships.

I do have a question. AT the start of mass effect 2, the sun the illusive man is at is a burning red. Through out the game it starts to turn to a blue-ish color, by the end of the game the sun is completely blue.  What is that about?

I've also wondered about whether TIMs sun has any greater relevance to the plot or if it is just a mirror of your final decision about the Collector base. Because if you decide on destroying the base, the sun will be completely blue. Decide on keeping the base and the sun will be completely orange/red. It's quite interesting to note that those two colours are fitting the colours of the paragon and renegade bar so also fitting the type of decision you made about the base.

If there was a second, undiscovered portal, why would Sovereign have gone through all the trouble of having Saren break into the heavily-guarded Citadel?  Saren could have simply gone to the second portal and opened it, with no one the wiser.  The Citadel may well be such a resource-intensive undertaking that even the Reapers could only create one.

I think the ultimate solution is to destroy the Citadel.

Because attacking the Citadel = wiping out any semblance of galactic government. they have been doing that God knows how many times, no need to change the plan because of some minor setbacks, or so Sovereign thought I suppose.
So a second portal is still a possibility.
