I have learned the Blood Mage skill but have not actually specialized yet since I think I read somewhere that Wynne would leave my party if I become a BM.  Is that the case - because she if kind of vital for healing?

No.  In fact you can make Wynne into a Blood Mage.

If you're a blood mage during Broken Circle and tell Wynne and all of the templars and mages at the end, she'll attack you and you have to kill her. Other than that, no.

There is oddly no significant repercussions for being a Blood Mage, except if you have the option to explicitly tell someone in dialogue. Seems kind of odd given how much everyone freaks out if anyone else in the game uses it. I mean one person in the game is punished because he is suspected to be a Blood Mage (granted he was one, but no one knew for sure until he cast a spell).

I think Grey Warden's are the only people legally allowed to use Blood Magic, that doesn't explain why no one acknowledges it though. Tbh, it would really annoy me if becoming a blood mage meant I had to fight dozens of mobs of templars everytime I passed a Chantry and if I lost half my companions just for picking the spec.

Also, Irving says that Greagor has eye witness testimony to Jowan being a blood mage, I doubt those witnesses were really telling the truth though. They were probably going on rumor and innuendo.

I think that if a Grey Warden was a Blood Mage, he would keep it very secretive. I personally doubt that even a Blood Mage is accepted among the ranks of the Grey Wardens openly.

Yeah, Jowan should have been a companion he was pretty cool. By the way, how did you finish the quest to cure the Earl?

I kind of suspect the reason Jowan was dropped as a possible companion was largely because they just flat out didn't want to deal with whether or not Grey Wardens were allowed by the Chantry to use Blood Magic.

Right that makes sense. Still though he was a pretty cool character. Because unlike the common belief that Blood Mages are "evil" he was the complete opposite, and he just wanted to make things right.

I assumed they dropped Jowan because of space actullay. They probably chose Oregan because they needed a dwarf in the party. Though no offense to fans, I find him kinda pointless...

I would have like Jowan because of the whole 'blood mages' are evil thing. Was I the only person who didn't have a problem with blood mages? Sure they can use the blood of others and such, but what if they only used their own? I didn't want to label them all as evil I guess, Jowan being a prime example...I'm way too much of an idealist

Jowan is a party member in the Mage Origin story, so he would have just needed some more dialogue and maybe a companion quest. Besides BioWare dropped him early on in development, so space reasons would be unlikely even if he didn't already have the capacity to be a party member.

They must have just changed their minds then. His companion story would obviously have the party go and free Lily from the mage?? prison...which sounds rather interesting if you ask me. I want to go there!

I agree. It's not the magic that's evil, some people just use it as a tool for evil but the same can be said of normal magic or even swords. As a proud blood mage, I resent people saying we are evil.

I hope its addressed in awakenings. Though I still feel Jowan is the ideal 'cover' character to invoke blood mage sympathy.

Mabey I'm the ideal cover charecter. I'm a blood mage and the "Hero of Ferelden"... just watch as the Chantry slandors my reputation and sends Templars to kill me.

It would be cool if you could actually convince people that blood mages can be good. You just know it will end in war though.

Jowan is the reason I've never made any of my characters blood mages. I've made Morrigan and Wynne into blood mages. But, judging from Jowan, blood magic turns perfectly good mages into whiny incompetents. Plus it's icky.

Considering what you have to do do in order to BECOME a blood mage you might have a pretty hard time trying to prove your point...

When you are in the fade saving Connor, you make a deal with the demon instead of killing her.

Based on every Blood Mage besides Jowan, I don't think he is supposed to show "Blood Mages are just misunderstood." I think he was specifically removed from being a companion to avoid giving a sympathetic Blood Mage that much time in the game.

Jowan is a very special case that even the main character cannot replicate. Jowan seemed to only have looked into blood magic trying to become a better mage to avoid the tranquility. He had absolutely no interest in fighting or controlling anyone. He didn't even try to break out of his cell, which would have been quite easy considering he managed to stun the First Enchanter and Templar Commander with ease.

The fact the specialization system allows you to unlock in other playthroughs really shouldn't undermine the fact you have to make a deal with a demon to get it.

Mabey I'm just warped but I don't feel evil for making the deal with the demon. I may have made a single shady decision but a single decision doesn't make you evil. I was simply saw an opportunity to make myself a stronger combatant against the Blight.

What I meant by not evil is that I don't try to make people my thralls so I can use them to power my magic, I don't worship demons and sacrifice the blood of virgins to them. I simply made myself a better combatant against a much greater evil. In the end did I not save the world?

I do see your point but I think it can be a matter of perspective.

Actually, it goes to "Does end justify the means?" argument. According to the lore inside DA:O, being a blood mage is more prone to be possessed by Demon. And, if not all have acquired "Warden's Keep", it has given a bit more knowledge about the blood magic. The mage (I don't recall his name) has written some note about as Blood Magic is learnt/granted from Demons, the Demons can easily change/twist the terms for their largest benifits, thus the blood mages have to pay the price eventually.

There is no a definite right or wrong about this. It is just whether you are willing to pay the price (under high risk of being possessed and become an abnomination/demon).
