My mage character is coming along nicely and it's getting to the point that I'll probably want to invest in a new line. Probably going to go with the Death line, but I'm thinking of Mana Alteration. My main question is...

Does Mana Drain work on non-mage characters? If so, how effectively?

Not completely sure, but it sometimes for me, it seems like it doesn't work.  Unless it's just such a small amount I don't really see the benefit.

I've never gotten any mana from an enemy that doesn't possess it. It's why I use Death Syphon, it drains mana from any corpse and it'll add back 40 or so mana (depending on spellpower) for each corpse it eats up. Mana Drain will net you about 40 also depending on spellpower, and use of improved drain.

Mana Drain isn't worth a spell point if you're planning to use it for mana management. Even if you do have an enemy spellcaster to point it at and you're willing to keep them alive to use as a battery, it'll only get you one spell's worth every 10 seconds. Maybe. If you aren't too ambitious about what spell you choose.

Really, at the moment, the only reason to pick up Drain and Cleanse is with the assumption that you'll be proceeding to Mana Clash, or at least Spell Might (but if you've gone that far, you might as well get Clash - you've already paid the tax of two virtually useless spells, after all).

I have been trying to use Mana Drain.  It can be helpful early in the game when you are drained of mana and need that 1 more cast a little faster.  Later game it just seems to get lost.

They should have made the spell stronger by being able to drain from anyone or being able to drain a much higher quantity.  Even using Enhanced Drain doesn't cut it.
