"I had a mabari once. Adalla--that was her name. We found her in the wood shed one night. She was still a pup then. We never figured out where she came from. My mother called her a gift from the Maker. And she was... she really was. She was beautiful; she had a lovely chestnut brown coat, and the most intelligent, understanding eyes. You would have liked her. We grew up together. She never left my side, not once. Ten years we had her, before she was taken away... "
All right haters, see if you can hate him now. I dare you.

I just started re-reading The Stolen Throne again to get another dose of Loghain.
Just have to get through the parts about Maric without grinding my teeth though...

Oh, bless him! I never took Loghain and Dog out together and I wish I had now. What a shame to miss that conversation. So sad to hear him talk about his mother as well. Your picture is gorgeous, and I don't normally go all gooey over baby pictures. I think it's seeing that Loghain expression on a baby face that does it for me. That and the little chubby hand clutching the dog.

And thanks to everyone for the compliments. I really enjoyed writing my fic. There is an Awakening sequel, if anyone is interested and I have just gotten to the beginning of the Loghain bits.
Pretty and Pragmatic
You know...I will be very disappointed if you replace Loghain with Nathaniel as a romance for Kya....

Oh, it's her fic, let her do as she likes. Besides, Loghain is forced to leave in Awakening, so it's not like Kya is choosing Nate over him. Or is it Nate specifically you don't like?
(I'm glad I was by myself when I read this fic because I cried like an idiot when Loghain left.)

. . . . a piece of parchment lays on the desk, half crumpled and then carefully smoothed back out again. The fire crackles and the only other sound is quiet but dysrhythmic breathing. . . .
Kya,
A part of me did not want to write this – I admit I liked the idea that back in my beloved Ferelden I would still be, if only in your mind. But I know you and I know that once you had half the chance, you would be persistently on your way to Orlais, no matter what I had told you. The idea that you would travel so far, only to be met with this from an Orlesian stranger; it makes my blood run cold.
I should have told you, I know. But I couldn't bear the thought of those last moments being any more painful than they already were. Selfish of me, I'm sure. But some things I cannot change about myself, and I think perhaps you would be disappointed if they did.
It is time.
Once the ink has dried, once this letter is safely in the hands of the courier, I will make my way towards the inevitable. The Deep Roads are calling, and as much as I have fought it, it is to no avail.
By the time you are reading this, it is likely that I will already be dead.
I will not ask that you do not mourn for me, although the thought to write it did cross my mind. I will say instead that I have lived, far longer than I ever expected to as a young man, and have been given far more chances than perhaps I even deserved. Much of my life was bitter and cold, but despite all my mistakes, I have been given a great gift by this – and by you.
No dying feeble in a bed, no assassins blade, no poison save for the taint in my blood. Your choice gives me the chance to die as I have lived – on my feet, unafraid and facing that which so many others could never muster the courage to endure.
I will die with honor and with your name on my lips, of this you can be certain.
May the Maker watch over you always,
Loghain
. . . . still the fire crackles. A hand reaches up to the parchment, mangling the edges in uncareful fingers. She reads it again, aloud, her voice ragged and the words hardly understandable.
The death of a Grey Warden is no small thing, nor is it something that is not to be expected. We all die, someday; Grey Wardens know their own death the moment they taste darkspawn blood and lyrium.
She says the words then, words branded into her brain like they are a part of her.
"In war, victory."
Swallowing hard.
"In peace, vigilance."
A small sound. A pause, though the last words are right there at her lips. They must be said now. Yet she wonders if she refuses, if something might change and be different. A vain hope that, but still, she thinks it. And then the words tumble out because she simply cannot stop them.
"In death, sacrifice."
Silence again.
Then, after a while, the sound of heartbroken, unconsolable weeping.

I also just redid Loghain's redemption. Although I him doing the deed did not spark anything from me, seeing Anora cry when I told her that her father died with honor was....just well.

That is just too awesome. He really needs to be dirtied up a tad though, to give him that 'downtrodden, Ferelden farmers son' thing and the 'Aaaaaw, messy child! +20 Cuteness'.
But yeah, stern baby Loghain is awesome!

I've read that letter several times today, and I can't read it without crying. I'm scared to read it again.
And you know, not two hours before I first read it, I read some info that said the next Awakening patch is going to put the love-interest-letters back into Awakening... and then I found this...
You know it's really not easy to get a "happy" ending in this game; why do we like it so much, lol.

First off, I've got to stand up and slow-clap for you. This is a truly good bit of fanfiction writing you have done and the artwork is absolutely beautiful! You have also managed to portray Loghain in a light I hadn't seen him in before and you can just color me totally intrigued now!
I am only on my second play-through of DA:O (no DLCs, just the vanilla game so far), but I fully admit that I hated him my first play-through. Then again, I suppose that's not too surprising given that the game heavily influences female Wardens to fall in love with Alistair and loathe Loghain for, in the Warden's perspective, abandoning her and her comrades and leaving the army and the king for dead.
But I rather randomly stumbled upon this thread and feel like I completely missed a whole other aspect to the game and the character. And browsing these forums and reading both sides of the "Loghain is E-e-e-e-e-evil/Not Evil" debates is not helping!
So, great, great job! It really is, specifically, your work that has made me take a good, long, hard second look at Loghain. For you and for the other Loghain fans in this thread, I have a couple of questions if you folks don't mind indulging this inquiring mind (I come in peace, I swear!)?
1. Why does Loghain dislike the Grey Wardens so much? Bear in mind that I haven't read the two books yet, only played DA:O so far and read all sorts of spoiler-ific stuff on the forums, so perhaps this issue is addressed there? I understand his stance towards Orlais and all things related to that and can see the viewpoint regarding his decisions to quit the field at Ostagar, but I'm a bit puzzled as to why declare the Grey Wardens traitors and put a bounty on the surviving Wardens' heads? Because he fears revenge from them for his actions at Ostagar? Because putting the blame of Cailen's death on them helps shift the blame from him? Or is there something else entirely I have totally missed?
2. If you recruit Loghain as a Grey Warden, how much time do you actually get to have with him? On this second play-through, I plan on recruiting him (fully knowing I basically have to trade Alistair for him) but I seem to recall not much gametime between the Landsmeet and the Final Battle. Yet, I have read about folks saying he has very interesting camp dialogue if you raise his approval rating and also talk about taking him with them for the Return to Ostagar DLC. So, my question is, just how much can be done between the time you recruit him and the time the game pushes you along towards the Archdemon? Without having any DLC at the moment, it seems like not much is left. My character is about to finish up the last few Denerim rogue quests and then it's off to Redcliffe to start the Landsmeet process... there's not many quests left I can take him on aside from maybe going back to kill the High Dragon I left behind. Am I missing something?
2.b. Related to the above question(s), if I want to have maximum Loghain companion time, would it be prudent (in my next game run-through) to largely skip all non-essential quests and barrel through gathering the army, have the Landsmeet, kick Alistair to the curb, and drag Loghain along to go back and do all those sidequests I would've left behind? Or would I run into issues of not being a very high level because of all the XP such a plan leaves stacked towards the end of the game?
2.c. If I finally get the DLC bought and downloaded before my next run-through, is there a good order to do them in? I kinda have the order I like to do the army gathering in, but haven't a clue where to insert things like Return to Ostagar, Stone Prisoner, and Warden's Keep (I think that's all the DLC quests you can get other than Awakening, yes?).
Thanks in advance for helpful replies for the latest potential Loghain fan convert!
