I usually get the Longsword and use it on Alistair (or a tank PC). Your tank needs a good weapon in hand to deal damage to maintain aggro cause in his other he has a shield. I dunno It just seems to me its one of the nicer weapons in the game and my rogues prefer daggers (with insane dex/cunning)

Depends on who you want to use it, and what weapon specilization tree you have them on. Either is good.

I think its depends whether you use a 2h warrior as dps in your group. I took the greatsword for sten/oghren the first time.

Depends on what you plan to do with it. Starfang is both as a 2H and as a longsword pretty good - although IMHO it slightly loses from certain (expensive) daggers and the equipment from Return to Ostagar.

I'd say Greatsword, but only if you have someone to use it.

There are many good free one-handed weapons. Topsiders, Keening Blade, Aodh, Bloodline.

The only 2h Weapons that are any good, and are free, are Yusaris and Ageless.

Each version is outclassed by counter-parts anyways. For a pure dmg WAR you should rock dual daggers, for a S&S you should be using Maric's Arms (If you have RtO) and for a 2H you should be using the Chasind Great Mall. On my current playthrough Im rolling Zerk/Reaver Hime WAR using only Yusaris and Starfang. Why? Cause its fun...Cant wait ;D

longsword is better even better if armed with 3 master rune enchantments, also in comparance to greatsword it makes quicker work of your enemies.

I think they're both well-suited for the types of characters that are going to wield them. On my just-finished 2-hander playthrough, I used the greatsword through the end of the game, even over Ageless or Yusaris, which I found less versatile.

Having played an archer spec'ed rogue, neither form had great interest for me...

Why isn't there an option to create daggers, or something useful for a rogue??

I checked the stats on both, and GS seemed the most bang for the rock, and it looked the best of the two. I gave it to Sten, then Oghren. I loaded it up with runes, and he used it until the end of the game

greatsword is more powerful, but longsword is more practical because you can swing it faster. plus you can also carry a shield.

Greatsword is easily better than any other greatsword in the game whereas longsword is only slightly better than the keening blade. So greatsword.
