Hey Adaram, you've been busy! I just downloaded 1.02.3. Nice work, as always.

I'm creating a mage and have a question about where to put my 5 points. I want to put them all in constitution, but will that kill my magic abilities? What are average willpower and magic stats at start? Are 16 and 17 (respectively) usable numbers or will i be too weak?

There's a list of starting attributes here, or just look in the Character Creator.

I tend to bring my attributes up gradually based on the abilities I want to use, and how early I want them. I'd need 23 points in Dexterity to get Lethality by level 8. For an elf rogue, that's only 1 point in Dex every level, if I pick the Duelist spec (+1 Dex) at level 7.

I'd say it really depends on how you want to build your character. I find this system to be incredibly versatile.

An Arcane Warrior spec, for example, might want to put more points in Magic vs Constitution, due to the added protection from wearing armor.

Or you could put more points in Constitution early at the expense of Magic, you'll be tougher but you may not be able to use Tier IV spells (that all need 30+ Magic) until later in the game.

It's hard to be too specific without seeing how stats behave in the game though.

Some thoughts:

Dwarf Berserker: +2 STR, +10 Vitality. I feel like the Powerful branch is the one for a berserker, especially Death Blow. All 4 tiers of this branch require Strength, although you'll also want decent Dexterity for dodging, hit chance and attack speed. The Assault branch seems the most 'offensive' shield style (Dwarf Nobles already have Shield Bash). For two-handed, I like the Critical Strike branch for Indomitable. The Two-handed Sweep branch is great for tanking multiple enemies, but Powerful Swings gives a penalty to attack and defense until you get Two-Handed Strength. edit: just a note - Dwarf Commoner Warriors start with Dual Weapon Sweep; maxing dual-weapon trees require high Dexterity.

Dwarf Assassin: +2 Dexterity, +2.5% Critical Chance.
Useful for backstab talents (you start with Dirty Fighting, so Combat Movement and Coup de Grace make perfect sense), and abilities that increase the critical chance (such as Dual-Weapon Expert). The specialization bonus might be wasted on talents that already auto-crit. For an archer (I'm picturing a badass crossbow) the Melee Archer branch gets you Aim & Master Archer, again with increased crit chance. Increase Cunning higher than Strength to max the potential of Lethality (and for Combat TrainingStealth), and continue the Dex-heavy build to get Evasion by Level 12.

But again, I'm just guessing. B)

Casters which race or if all races except Dwarf of course are the best casters ??also once i have picked the race i am wanting to either balance my 5 points between magic and willpower but is there other areas in which i should be taking notice of example for Shapeshifters and Blood mages and are there extra benefits from putting all 5 points into 1 area or not?

also i have heard that any class can plant traps but on rogues can make them and disable poisons also can be used by any class I have also heard about grenades but there has not been any mention are they to be used like a archer uses his bow or planted and left as a booby trap for mobs to activate also any feedback on duellists for rogue what pointers are needed to be looked at

any feedback would be appreciated cheers!!!!

@daem3an: Wow. You seem to know a lot about how the game works already. How do you know that stuff? I looked at the character planner but it didn't make any sense to me. I don't know what to do with it. Where can i find info on spell, ability and specialization requirements? I took a look at the wiki but it doesn't give many specifics yet and has incomplete data (eg: nothing about arcane warrior). Also, where can i find info on points gained at level up?

Well, like I said, I'm just guessing based on what I've read and looking at the CC. Take it with a grain of salt. I'm looking forward to getting the real dirt from the CE Game Guide when it arrives on the 4th (hopefully I'll have the game soon after).

Are you looking on the official wiki? There's quite a bit more detail here, it's not all confirmed but that's where I got most of this. The specialization bonuses are from a German website that I can't remember at the moment - I'll have to look it up when I get home, but I wouldn't consider that official info either.

Sadly, spreadsheets tend to give me headaches. Although by the looks off it, you've done a good job making it.

I have some questions using the spreadsheet. I'm trying to build a human warrior. I'm looking at the skills now. I have 3 skill slots at level one. Can I select Combat Training Base, CT: Expert, and CT: Master all at level 1? Do I have to pump more than one skill point in a skill to get to the next upgrade?

Wow. Looking at Mr. Priestley's dwarf character, and the numbers on her stats are just... wow. Let alone all the bonuses that she's getting!

Seriously, my mage, by level 20 right now, has 2 attributes over 30, 1 at 20, and the rest are under 20. But looking at that dwarf... WOW.

I read somewhere (either here or elsewhere, so don't quote me as I don't recall where) that stats "gradually increase over the levels by a small amount". So that may account for the stats being higher than what you get from raw levelling.

Also, XLSX? I've never seen that format. XLS i know is MS excel. But what about XLSX? Because so far the latest sheet from adaram is in XLSX which it won't let me read (maybe its just my version of Excel).

thanks, thats what i figured, but wasnt sure. I'm running on an older computer for now. won't be playing on an older computer, just running on one. sad to say, it'll be at least 2-3 months before i can play the game! ((need to get a new computer))

Adaram, chances of creating a spreadsheet that those of use with older versions of excel (say excel 2003) can use?

Go back to the link in his first post. There is an .xls version. I'm using it with OpenOffice right now.

I noticed he had the 1.0.2.3 version in xls format, but he also had a more recent one called adaram build in xlsx format. Figured that was the one that had the skill point issue fixed. Since he knew about the bug several days ago. Oh well, I'll work around the bug.

Doh! Big instructions about skills in black and blue and I missed them. Senior moment there. Ok, I'm having fun with it. Thanks Adaram!

@Anzac:  I'm curious about how poisons/healing potions/etc work too. Pretty sure I've read the Magic attribute will have an effect there (either making them or using them). Possibly it even affects disease-type effects/resistances? That would make sense, otherwise, can't really see a use for it if you're not a caster.

Willpower affects all classes. Certain resistances will probably be based on this as well as Stamina/Mana. There's not much point in having high Magic if you don't have enough mana to cast more than one high level spell. Unless that's the build you're going for.

@elfwad:  this is the German website I was thinking of: click here.

What does Com1 through Com4 mean in the "SkillReq" area of the Talent section?

So why am I getting an error in the spreadsheet when I select Shield Pummel at level 2 when my STR is 20 and I've already selected CT Base and CT Improved at Level 1?

Hey folks! Sorry I have been lax in getting back to all these posts. If you hadn't heard, I am one of the Attendees at the Wardens' Quest Event in London, England next week. So I am quite busy getting prepared for that!

I'll try and address a few issues that I recall reading:

1. The .xls version should handle Excel 2003

2. I make no commitments about the ability for this to work in Open Office

3. If you are getting an error, first of all check to make sure you are putting the level number in the column, NOT just a #1 ... this is a common error. Someone on the original forums says they have a fix they are sending me to change that, so maybe that will make this easier when I see it.

I am working on a new version that has a summary page for printing, however, it won't likely get done until I get some time (perhaps at the gate while waiting for the plane on the trip or at the hotel)

Hope this helps.

Just tried it, it works for me. CT is Combat Training, not Combat Tactics, right?

I tried it in Excel 2002. Still doesn't work. Shield Pummel will not light up as available. Yes CT means combat training in my previous post.

EDIT:  Here's the spreadsheet uploaded to Rapidshare.com

Sledge you are correct. 1.02.3 still has that bug, which I have fixed in the next version that is not yet released. Just ignore the Error messages as they are errors from me, not from you! Thanks for sharing your file so I could see what was going on!
