Most merchants have one awesome item- an aritfact I suppose- costing about 80-120 gold coin. That's a massive sum! I am only now able to afford one- the Lifegiver ring at 87 gold. And I have been really stingy with my money, barely ever buying anything - picking up everything I can find and selling it.

So I imagine money will be very hard to come by and I would like to acquire as many of these awesome artifacts as I can.

Is there any way to get discounts from regular merchants? Like this dwarven merchant that has Lifegiver- as I progress the dwarven campaign will he like me more and sell it cheaper? Or are there any items or skills involved with getting things cheaper?

I guess this game money is just going to be hard to come by. That's good though.

No way that I know of.  I've never seen the high price items get cheaper.

You will get your first "high end" item around the 2nd treaty.

By the 4th treaty, you will have outfitted your pc with the best merchant items.

After Landsmeet, you will be wondering why is there more than a hundred gold lying around.

Gold is not the issue. Loot scaling is.

Add to that, a lot of the really good stuff isn't available from merchants. Starfang is arguably the best sword in the game. It's the result of having DLC and a random encounter. Even if you don't have the appropriate DLC, Axameter is a nice axe. All you need for it is the right random encounter.

best and less exploity is the potant lyrium potion making and selling them to the tower and knobel tavern because thats where you get the supplies for it from

edit must have a lvl 4 herbaloagist

Is this the lyirum smuggling thing from the guy in Orzammar?

I was wondering if thats a good way to make money - is it repeatable?

The poster is referring to making 'potent lyrium potions' which are the only items in the game that are profitable to craft. Rogek's smuggling operation is just a great quest to make cash, but isn't the same thing.

If you decide to get into manufacturing potent lyrium potions, be careful who you buy ingredients from. Also, choose who you sell to carefully. The merchant in Haven is a good purchaser as he goes away once you complete the quest for the Sacred Ashes.

Prsut, yes it is 1 time deal but if you have coercion at 2,you can buy the lirium at 40 souv. and sell it to the mage for 60 souv + intimidate him and you get 8 more extra..........then go to the mall.............

So it's considered an exploit because its the only item you can profit off of? Personally I think it makes perfect sense if you can manufacture a raw material into a finished product to turn a profit. You are spending your time to do it, right?

But why do I need to be careful about who I buy/sell from?

I guess I already lost that merchant in Haven. I got the ashes.

Some merchants seem to buy goods from you at a higher price than others. I've never done this before, but I guess you have to buy ingredients from the cats who sell low, and then sell you potions to the ones that buy high.

You can side with Bhelen and takes Lord Anwer Dace's discount for 25% off the price of goods sold by Gorim in Denerim.

If you over sell to a merchant you run the risk of corrupting your save files. Merchants have a limited capacity for inventory. So, merchants that reset their inventory at some point are good to sell to, as well as merchants with scant initial inventory. The Haven merchant has little to sell and you will wind up killing him at some point, anyway.

Woah, are you serious??

I have been selling almost everything to that caravan guy in my camp - am I at risk of corrupting my whole save game now?

There are no fixes for this?

I've seen it reported on the boards. The game definitely slows for me when I enter an area where the merchant has a lot of stuff. Test it out yourself. Sell to Herren, the tranquil merchant or some other merchant with an area all to himself. See what happens.

Best way to make money is with a high persuade and lockpicking. On my current rogue play I was holding 340+gp, after buying the Felon's Coat and I still donated 60gp to my troops.

I haven't run into this issue. Maybe I didn't sell enough stuff to the same merchant? If that's the case, then you can easily sell enough potent lyriums to buy what you need without breaking anything or having an absurd amount of cash. Especially if you are a dwarf noble because you get a significant shop bonus in the market (also, if you're a dwarf noble, you can earn money with greater lyrium pots).
