Well, don`t  know if anyone have made a thread about this before, but if you run shepard in renegade mode
his eyes becomes red, with the exact same triangle pattern that the illusive man posseses.
Only on TIM its blue, kinda giving the hint of paragon. Don`t know if theres something to this but just want to know
what you guys feel about this. Maybe he`s only portrayed to be an **** (just like the council) just to come back in ME3 and bite your decisions in the ass :P

Also this clearly indicates that he`s made by his own company in the same way shepard are.
Only question is why and by whom.

I haven't read the latest Mass Effect book, but from what I've heard it is clearly setting him up to be a villain.

He just had to get his eyes replaced because of staring too long right into the sun... and he's an egocentric dick. All he actually cares about are HIS plans for human dominance over everyone else. He doesn't even realize that with his actions he's about to cause what he's most afraid of: and alien attack on humanity. He only needs to open his eyes (haha) and take a look at the galaxy's recent history (Rachni, Krogan, etc.) The more a species tries to dominate/conquer the rest, the faster it gets crushed.

And he's the one making himself like that. No one behind it. He's xenophobic.

Regardless of whether he's a good guy or a villain, he's dying in Mass Effect three if I have anything to say about it.

Blowing up the collector base was my first big FU to him...

I gave him the collector base, I like someone who fights for humans. I'm a human nationalist haha. It will be interesting to see what he does with the base in ME3. Don't get indoctrinated now Mr. Sheen!

Indeed.

He tried his best to persuade, but I had none of it.

As for if he is good or bad... from the moment I saw him he struck me as an evil dude.

While I disagree with you; I like how you've pointed indoctrination out. That was part of the reason I blew it up.

Good guy? No, I would not call him that.
Good intentions? Being human, I do of course sympathize with his "humanity first" view point. Our species is new to the galactic scene, after all, and is still very much in a fragile position despite it's rapidly growing power and influence. I do not agree with many of his decisions, though.
Bad guy? I would hazard to call him a pseudo-villain. He's obsessed. He strikes me as an example of anyone who belongs to any sort of extreme Supremest/Survivalist group. As paragon Shepard says "I won't be controlled by my fears." Cerberus, the organization, and the Illusive Man, are exactly that. Controlled by their fears to such an extent that it's warped them and their view points into a very dangerous place.
What's that quote?  "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions."  This, in my opinion, is a general description that fits Cerberus and TIM.

Bad guy.

You hear it near the end, when Shepard asks him if he wants to secure human safety, or human dominance and he hesitates, and says that Cerberus is humanity. Which pretty much means that he wants human dominance.

Bare bones: domination is the earliest and most well-known motivation for an antagonist.

he dies because of lung cancer before he gets to anything with the base if you gave him that.

I wouldn't say that. I think he's just ruthless. He'll do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals. He says his goal is to help humanity, but that's all we know. What is his definition of helping humanity? If whatever he's planning succeeds, where does he see humanity ending up? That's the thing I want to know.

He's a stereotypical megalomaniac who claims he is working "for the good of humanity". This allows him to justify any evil act upon any person or species because it will forward his goals. Like all megalomaniacs, he fails to recognize that what he considers to be the best thing for humanity may not actually be so. The interests of Cerberus and humanity as a whole are not that closely aligned.

The game really do set him up to be a bad guy. The whole man in black suit, cigar and that dying star in the background.

However ask yourselves what is worst? Illusive man or the Reapers.

I think many people gives him the middle finger because they know things will eventually turn out right, whatever they choose, humanity and the other races will prevail against the Reapers - because they know its a story, and most stories have happy endings.

But the cold hard facts are that Reapers have probably 99% of the odds with them.

Im playing this the desperate way, because that is the most realistic. I would ally with every mercenary group out there, every flesh eating monster - everyone. Because the odds are so overwhelming against us.

The Illusive Mans agendas and ethics are nitpicking in the grander scheme of things. We need every ally we can possible get.
