WARNING:  THIS POST REQUIRES IMAGINATION AND A WILLINGNESS TO BRAINSTORM EVENTS SEVERAL YEARS IN THE FUTURE.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While ME1 was a risky endeavor that proved to be a success, ME2 became a blockbuster both in sales and critique.  Are they serious about stopping at ME3?  I realize there will be DLC and other content, but saying the Mass Effect story is a trilogy suggests it's over after ME3.  I say they may want to rethink that.

Let's jump ahead 4 years, post-ME3.  One could argue that every story arc ends eventually and that they now have this established universe to play in, but *I* would argue that anything less than saving the galaxy is sort of a lame, now.  SO where does that leave any possible spinoff?  I think they have 5 choices:

1)  Continue the story as it stands, a la Final Fantasy, maybe with/without Shepard but likely with some of the characters we've already seen.  I'm not sure BioWare considered the commercial success they've had with ME2, and likely with ME3.  Perhaps they'll decide to continue the story.  My favorite option.

2)  Start in timeframe of ME1, but this time featuring one of the other races working in parallel to what Shepard et al did to stop the Reapers-- much like Crysis.  Same conflict and timeframe, just different point of view.  I would not like this option, but it's better than option 3.

3)  My least favorite option:  BioWare will go backward in time-- perhaps a new trilogy featuring the Prothean era, since prequels in sci-fi seem to be all the rage right now in the entertainment world.  I hope to hell not.  The Protheans weren't all that interesting other than their relays and love for slow elevators.

4)  Same world and time (just after ME3), but new characters with a completely new galactic threat.  Perhaps all out war with the newly-spawning Krogans like the Federation/Klingon example.

5) The personal story.  No galactic heroism, no grand conflict, just one man and his fight for 'x' (x= whatever).  An example of this would be the NWN2 expansion Mask of the Betrayer.  Not sure if they could squeeze more than a single game out of this concept, but there you have it...

Anyone else?  If you were Drew, what would you dew?  Posted Image

Bioware won't stop at Mass effect 3. The universe is too good to ignore it once the trilogy is done ayway.

I just hope that Bioware can keep working on it and not some B or C level studio from EA.I'm sorry, but most of the talent under EA is mediocre or decent at best and creating game in the vein of Bioware is well above their capacities.

I think Mass Effect 3 will be the end of Shepard's story, but we could see the universe from other perspectives. That said, I hope Bioware keep a closer grip on it than Lucas did with Star Wars (Which now has a huge expanded universe which is 90% crap). I wouldn't be opposed to seeing non rpg games in the setting. Some kind of space combat oriented game would be nice, and fit in what we've seen in ME1 and ME2.

EA has more or less confirmed that the ME universe won't end with ME3. The sense I'm getting is that ME3 will be the end of the story of Commander Shepard's struggle against the Reapers, but other games set in the same universe will continue to be made for a while yet.

I just hope that there will still be RPG's in the ME franchise. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they could find a lot of success branching out into other genres. I could see an ME RTS, FPS, or even and MMO doing very well, just hope they rememeber their RPG roots.

i dont mind if bioware continues ME after ME3, but i someone else were to do it (as reported) i doubt they would come near what we have come to expect from the quality that bioware delivers.

its just like how star trek got silly after ST6 (NG, DSG, VOY et al).

In a way, I want it to stop at number 3 so it can rest in history as the greatest RPG trilogy ever. Games like these are just too good to be milked and ruined with endless lower quality titles feeding off the success of the originals (looking at you, Halo).

On the other hand, we've got a pretty awesome universe set up here and I trust Bioware to deliver on storylines, whether it involves Shepard or not.

YES

Neverwinter Nights was awesome, played through tonnes of times - Bioware.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was "okay" played through once and then half a game - Obsidian.

I enjoyed NWN2 and the expansions a great deal.   My only complaint is that NWN2 had a horrible release because it was a bug-filled mess.  Bio probably wouldn't have allowed that, but story-wise I didn't think it was subpar.  But the other expansions were great.  In fact the aforementioned Mask of the Betrayer expansion was probably the best expansion I've ever played, ToB not withstanding.
