 I probably sound really stupid here, but I am having issues with creating a char on ME2.  I click new game, and then 'male' and then from there hit continue after choosing a few options. From there it takes me to the Martin Sheen cinematic. 

Where/how do I create a new character? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

You don't actually create your character until near the end of the opening, which is roughly 12 minutes long. Be prepared for some frustration because the face creator is still very limited and what you see may not be what you end up with when you gain control of Shepard at the beginning of the tutorial.
