What are peoples opinions of the variety of these weapons.  I just finished my 1st playthrough and I used the Reaper particle beam way more than any other heavy weapon.  Some just didn't seem to do that much, the missile launcher and grenade launcher I tried a bit but they didn't have devasting results.

I never did get the nuke weapon to work at all.  I have no idea what it is supposed to do.  I'd pull the trigger and even hold it and just a puff of steam or smoke comes out and meanwhile I'm getting hammered by the opposition.  I'll give the other weapons a bigger chance in my next game but the beam weapon was by far the best for me in the 1st play through.

Not sure if this falls under Characters, classes, and Builds but ...

The Cain (nuke) takes a bit to deploy. I'm not sure the exact amount of time but it takes about 4-6 seconds to fire (hold down the fire button). Needless to say you don't want to stand too close to your target when you fire it. It does massive damage but until you fully upgrade Heavy Ammo Capacity in the research lab you'll only be able to fire one shot before running out of energy/ammo. With heavy weapon ammo fully upgraded you can get off two shots.

Personally I switch between the Missile Launcher and the Collector Particle Beam. The latter is absolutely devastating against barriers and shields. It's damn effective against Husks, too. For the final boss I use the Missile Launcher as I can take out two "feeding tubes" at a time.

I use the collector's beam and cain only. The cain is good for heavy bosses (end game boss, thresher, etc). Nothing else really comes close to the beam weapon though. It does bonus damage vs shields and health, and good damage to armor. The other heavy weapons just don't do enough damage. If the grenade/rocket launchers did more AoE I might consider them, but as it is they aren't that great.

@Beerfish The Nuke is really dangerous, but for working it you need to hold it down a loooong time.

And aim it as faaaar away rom you as you can ;)

For Husk Masses i think the Black Hole Canon is best.

Against toughies the Collector-Beam.

I love the Frost one, it's just a really good way to clean a group of enemies in seconds as a vanguard, shoot->freeze->charge = BAM! Shattered enemy spikes everywhere flying :D

I only used the Particle Beam, the Flame Thrower and the Nuke. The rest just don't seem to be very lethal, I could just use regular guns.

@ Beerfish I also only used the Collector Beam and Cain. Oh, and to fire a shot from the Cain you must have at minimum '100 ammo', otherwise it will just puff smoke.

I think it depends on the class. I found my Soldier could dish out obscene amounts of damage at any range, so I just took the missile launcher to hit enemies that are in cover.
The Ice-Gun gave my Vanguard some extra CC, also works pretty well with charge. I only used heavy charge, but it might actually work pretty well with area charge.
I love the flamethrower on my infiltrator, not only does it give you some nice short range firepower, but I found it hilarious to sneak up on a group of enemies and set them all on fire.

I must admit I didn't use them much at all with my Vanguard. Groups without shields were taken out by shockwave (or an area pull/unstable warp combo), and shields/barriers I took down with an SMG. As I picked sniper as my additional, I used that to take out armored opponents. Tough guys were frequently subjected to a charge and liberal shotgun spray.

I used the missile launcher to take out the tubes on the final boss, but I'm not sure if this was necessarily the most efficient use of the ammo, I think i might have been better off using the pistol and using the missile launcher for the final stage. I used the cain once on the 'stop the mechs from destroying the crates' mission - it vaporised the two close ones. Brutal, but didn't find much a use for it in general.

However, I'm not really surprised I didn't use them much. I rarely use 'Superweapons' in games, because I always think "I'll conserve my ammo until I hit a really tough boss." I used them once each to get the achievement, but apart from that - I used them on the Mechs and the final boss. In hindsight, I should have unleashed them on at least the Colossus and the Praetorian.

I used my Cain on the Praetorian, which imo is the hardest "boss" in the game.

it annoying you hav to get 100 ammo to us the nuke launcher, but its well worth it tho.

you need some distance tho wen you fire, i found out the hard way. wen vs the two big mechs of harkins, i was too close wen i used it, i nuked them and myself (big mistake, lol)

tho wen i did it agen, i took the high ground, took cover and then fired. There was nothing but ash left of the two, lmao. i love that gun so much

i carry it around always now, for the tough guys, and to collect ammo for it. i usually hav a reserve of about 20 or 40 after firing, tho might be able to get as far as 60 reserve after firing after al the ammo upgrades

Are you playing on casual or something?

I had trouble with Cain at first too; it only seemed to me as if it puffed smoked, then I realised that the percentage number beneath the aiming reticule served a purpose. The number has to be over 100%, or the Cain simply will not fire. You have to pick up heavy weapon ammunition in order to reach the 100% value. This is why I don't like the Cain; you can't rely on it in a situation in which you might need it.

I don't see what's so bad about the missile launcher. I use it as my primary heavy weapon... the collector particle beam has only managed to annoy me, and the flamethrower is a bit of a suicide weapon that I can only imagine a Vanguard or Soldier using.

The flamethrower is great in tandem with biotics. Pull someone toward you, then burn them in midair! It works flawlessly. It's also incredibly useful as a Vanguard. Charge someone with a flamethrower, and they are screwed.

However, that being said, black hole gun > all other heavy weapons. Some might say Cain is better, but you only get one shot with it.

Where can you find flame thrower and black hole gun? I completed first playthrough as soldier and didn't find either anywhere (had grenade launcher, rocket launcher, freeze gun, collector particle beam and portable nuke)

Out of those Particle Beam on adrenaline wins.

Cain (nuke gun) + Blackstorm (black hole gun) are my most used heavy weapons. Really love that blackstorm though

I only use Blackstrom because I love the effect. But other than that, I would not miss any heavy weapons.

On normal actually, any problem? Anyway I only ever use the heavy weapons on bosses, or groups in the main quests ( the sidequests are so stupidly easy that just charging + oneshooting with the claymore that's it's not worth wasting time switching weapons ). My first playthrough, not going to try hardcore or insanity, but tbh If I knew it would become so easy the game once you had some skills lvled and upgrades I would have tried on hard at least, specially the N7 missions are quite boring, so easy and short, at least they are pretty different one from each other

The missile launcher doesn't seem to do much damage at least for me, the grenade is ok at first, when I used the collector "line-beam" I laughed so much I couldn't stand it, sorry xD and the.... nuclear one, well, just forget it. The flamethrower is handy vs heavy mechs and so, but I prefer the frost one just for added CC

You can change the difficulty at any time by going into the options menu. Not a bad idea for once you start getting higher level powers

the rocket luncher is great for seeking out eniemes who are under cover, better yet infiltrators, since it takes time to line up that shot and cloaking and running behind your enemy, while very fun, is very risky.

the flamethower you get from zaeed's loyalty mission, its on the floor, doesn't matter if you do paragon or renegade route.
the black hole gun is a collectors edition dlc.

Blackstorm Singularity gun is the best for taking out groups of enemies ie. husks, eclipse mercs, collectors... It's downfall is against gunships, praetorians etc...

The Avalanche Freeze gun is very useful, and I like it much better than the Flamethrower for up close.

Finally, the Missile Launcher is good against Mechs, Scions, Praetorians, Harbingers, and Gunships. Not very useful for taking out crowds though.

The Nuke is pointless, it takes way too much ammo. The Collector Beam is a waste against groups and not strong enough on bosses. The Grenade Launcher is a poor man's Missile launcher and requires even more accuracy. So I don't use the 3 of them, or the Flamethrower.

just a quick FYI, if you headshot a YMIR mech to death, they have a timed 10-second explosion that is the same scale as the cain. i didnt even know you could knock the heads off a mech, so when zaeed said "CLEAR THE BLAST ZONE NOW SHEPARD!" and i just stood there, it came as QUITE a shock to watch myself die in a nuclear firestorm.

Blackstorm is beast, Nuke is also nice but it has 1 bullet, blackstorm has 3 and you pick up 2 bullets every time not just half a bullet like you do with nuke. I also like flamer, i tend to play a up and personal style though. So yeah if you have no DLC (everyone should have the flamer though), its pretty much only nuke and particle beam thats useful.
