Hi there, everyone. Here's what I'm working with according to my system info:
Win 7 Home Premium
AMD II Dual Core Mobile M500, 2200 Mhz, 2 Cores, 2 Logical Processors
6 GB RAM
AMD M880 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 w/336 MB of RAM
So I've been running the game pretty as a picture without any problems at all since the end of November. I downloaded the Warden's Keep and Stone Prisoner DLCs and played them (as well as the rest of the game) through without incident.
So I'm playing through the game a second time now, and was equally problem-free until I installed the 1.02a patch, which I needed in order to run the Return to Ostagar DLC. After installing both, the game started crashing. At first, it was about every fifteen minutes to half an hour, but now I've hit a point where it crashes in just the same spot each time, preventing me from progressing any further.
I've searched the forum up and down, and seen a few posts about issues with 1.02a and RTO, but none that exactly hone in on what I've been experiencing, it seems - and I haven't seen any solutions.
I'm not sure what to do. I know a little about the nuts and bolts of my machine, but only enough to make me dangerous - I'm worried about messing with my drivers, I don't know how to adjust the temperature on my graphics card (or if that's something I should even do), and I've already defragged my drive.
So, in short - halp? Please?
Thank you! <3

The more posts I read, the more convinced I become that this is an overheating issue - though I'm still not clear on why it never happened before. Is there any way to fix this, or am I just screwed now?

I hope it's okay that I'm bumping this - I just wanted to see if anyone might have any ideas. I did post it at kind of a weird time...

A note for anyone facing the same issue I am - after a chat with someone in another post in this forum, I figured I should get a cooling pad for my laptop. I put one on order, but after doing some research on how cooling works in a laptop, as a temporary quick fix, I've put my laptop on a wire cake cooling rack and opened the window, and this has helped a LOT.

I have the same prob like you. Had the game since launch and never a problem, quit playing for a while and decided to pick up again now that RtO is out. I already had 1.02a since before, but added rtO now and boom.. more and more frequent crashes (nothing if I just stand still, but any interaction is an instant crash to desktop). I have the temps onscreen at all time and looks like 50ish so shouldn't be enough to crash.
So far I've tried:
reinstalling game with 1.01b and no RtO
reinstalling Win 7 with game patched to 1.02a, no RtO
minimizing settings
removing any overclock
latest drivers
older drivers
memory diagnostics (ALL OK)
virus scan (no probbs)
defrag (less than .5%)
and prolly more I've forgotten.. all to no avail, game just keeps crashing...

Definitely not overheating, checked eVGAPrecision tool when game crashed (seconds after save load) and temp was never above 47c (GPU utilization hit the roof though).

D'oh! >.< Cooling it off helped me some, but it still crashes periodically. I'm not sure what else to do.

Have the exact game problem. Played this same at its release, no problems at all. Same hardware now, one patch later, but I dont even have the new DLC RTO and still got so many crashes it frustrates...now I even can't load a game because game crashes when because I get the window telling me I am not logged in, but the bottom left corner says logged in....

Have you considered changing your video driver? Possibly a newer (or even older in odd circumstances -- if a new bug was introduced) version can help.
Also, you could look at changing your video settings in both the game and in the driver settings.

I'm having a similar problem. After downloading the new patch and RtO, every two minutes into play my game would start slowing down and make fuzzy sounds in the background for a good 7 seconds. The game loads properly though.
And yes, I've tried changing everything in my video settings, as well as even re-installing it. but nothing seems to get rid of this bug.

Believe me, it won't help..
I've reinstalled game
reinstalled os and game
older drivers
latest drivers
minimal settings
defrag
virusscan
memdiagnostics
ran it with open window (VERY VERY cole here in sweden now)
nothing makes a iota of difference... as soon as I enter new room, move to fast or anything game crashes to desktop.

I am having the same problem as you all. Just came back to the game; had it since launch and np, and got RTo installed it npbut when I get into Ostigar and go to do the first fight it crashs everytime right there.

Was having same issues .I couldn`t even get past the splash screen when ctd .What i did first was get rid of the nvidia 196.21 drivers rolled back to 190.62 i think . Did ok for a few days and then it started all over again with weird graphics . such as Alistair instead of walking upright was some kind of moving blob and different colored squares of orange and white lights around weapons. Uninstalled drivers once again .Ran Driver Sweeper to clean up leftover fragments .Reinstalled 190.62 drivers with default settings then disabled physX from within nvidia control panel .NO discernable differences in graphics detail as far as i can tell .Been ok now for almost 2wks with no crashes. But as always ,keeping my fingers crossed. My system specs are Intel Core2 duo,8gigs ddr2-800 memory with Asus GTS250 1Gig ded. video memory. Also i am not running any Asus software. caused way too many problems for me. Sorry for the long post. Hope this helps

Does it matter that I don't have a Nvidia video card? Also, I haven't had any issues with weird graphics, and the splash screen/main menu both come up. It's just that it crashes during gameplay.

Ok just installed the old drivers and I can now play for about 5 min and np what so ever; which is beeter than a few seconds and crash...lol.I alsohad to turn off SLI. For some reason when I switched over to the older drivers I got like stobeing of light on teh screen and truning off sli helped that out.

That's awesome and everything, Swift, but at what cost? I mean, I'm running a modest system, but it surpasses the minimum requirements and meets the recommended (except, of course, for the video card - damnit!) but in the end, it ought to work without crashing every ten to fifteen minutes wihtout me having to buy a new video card or a new computer, you know?

Got reply from Swedish support and was told to remove any virtual disks like Daemon tools and that NONE of their games support 64bit OS and that might be the prob.
