Yeah, you could take Jacob home to meet your folks... he'd probably bring a bottle of whisky along for your dad and a peach pie for your mum. You'd talk over dinner about past missions, and your parents would gradually come to accept Jacob as a nice guy who wants to do what's best, and will take care of you. He'd put them at ease, and they'd approve.
Compared with, for example, Jack. From the moment you walk in the door and they see her scantily clad tattooed body, right up until the point where Jack starts talking about her days as a badass killer and your mum faints, your folks are going to be freaking out.
Zaeed... well, you could bring him home, but you'd have to sneak him into the house and hide him under the table and feed scraps down to him when your PU's aren't looking. It would be pretty dire... not quite as bad as Jack maybe, but I can definitely see a mother figure fixating on the scars and his gun obsession.
Miranda is so perfect, she could be anything she wants to your parents. Girl next door or super-intelligent Cerberus operative. She might make your folks uncomfortable at times, but they'd probably approve over-all. Especially if you introduced her after they've already met Jack. They'd be falling over themselves to make her welcome, thanking Bob that you've got over your freakishly tattooed love-interest.
It would be awesome taking Mordin home to meet your folks, he could have the entire conversation by himself. I'd love to hear his observations afterwards, too. I wonder what the folks would think about him and his new genophage, though. Would they approve? Maybe. They'd probably tell you to be cautious around him, because he's quite willing to kill people he thinks deserve it.
Bit more difficult with Tali and Garrus, what with the whole 'human food is poisonous' thing going on. Even if your folks got their hands on Quarian food, how would Tali eat it without breaking the seal of her suit? I think they'd like Tali as a person, they'd sympathise with her, but her differences might make them uncomfortable. As for Garrus... he'd either make your folks nervous or have them in stitches. Not really sure.
Same with Grunt. I can't see him having table manners or knowing how to use a knife & fork... folks would probably see him as some sort of large, intelligent pet, which is a bit sad.

I was playing femShep and I go up to this Jacob guy I am being forced to take with me, figure I better get to know him to see if I can trust him. The game forces me to flirt with him whether I like it or not, not only in the tone of voice but the way femShep look's at him, and leans back on the table all take me now ****ty **** crap.
So I never talked to him again outside of getting the ship upgrade and doing his loyalty mission, and that was because I wanted a perfect playthrough.
My Shep was with Liara and had little interest in men if any, the fact that flirting was shoved down your throat will never sit right with me, along with the crappy hack writing job they did for Liara, though I will leave those complaint's in their own thread
If the game would allow it I would intentionally put Jacob out the airlock, and film it so I could sit in my room and watch it over and over cackling with glee every time.

Yes but he's huge, and cutlery is tiny.

for my view I'll be able to put it pretty bluntly:
Jacob is a sweet, well rounded, likable, every day sorta guy. and there in I think is most of the problem. he is such a wonderful every man, that he can't stand out too well compared to other characters that will inspire obsessive love, or deep hatred.
I think this might be the biggest problem, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Sometimes the guys with the baggage have too much baggage to really deal with. I thought Jacob was down the earth and the hug at the end was awesome as hell for me. If only every other character did that. It really put me in a good mood. I liked how he was working for Cerebus, but didn't pull any punches about how he felt about them, but dealing with them was better than the crap he had to deal with on the Alliance side. Much like what Shepard was doing. Overall a good character, in my opinion.

I was completely sickened by my Sheps overt flirting. It was so tasteless, I honestly avoided him like the plague after the first couple of times. I was scared to talk to him because I couldn't seem to manage it without panting after him.
That. Also he's just dull.
Also also: why does the game always assume that Miranda and Jacob are the core of your team and the people you most want advice from? Surely Shepard is far more likely to trust and respect the likes of Garrus and Tali, who are long-standing allies, rather than these Cerberus cronies suddenly forced on him/her. Basically every time Jacob turned up in a debriefing, butting in with his opinion while the rest of my team were excluded from the meeting, I liked him a little less.

I kind of figured he was the "second in command" or "security advisor" while Miranda was basically the pencil pusher who made sure all the books were in order. In that capacity, made sense for him to be there.

Not female. Not alien. Not even the redeeming 'cool' feature of being an ugly old veteran like Zaeed.
Plus his skillset (weapons and powers) doesn't really cut the mustard compared to other characters (eg Jack and Zaeed are more useful even without their bonus powers).

I think the vagueness of Jacob's official role on the ship is part of the problem - the game acts as if he's some kind of officer, but it never really states what his position is.
And beyond that, Shep has no reason to trust Cerberus - you have to put up with them, and maybe Jacob and Miranda can earn your trust as the game goes on - but characters like Joker, Garrus, Tali and the doctor have your trust from the get go - so are far more logical people to be taking advice from.
Essentially what annoys me here is that the game plays favourites - you often have dialogue options to ask what people think of Miranda and Jacob, but never about anybody else, and Miranda and Jacob keep popping up in cut-scenes and briefings to the exclusion of almost everyone else. Either I'd like the game to be a bit more even-handed, or I'd like to chose myself who I consider my trusted advisors.
Miranda I could handle - at least she's interesting and has some decent things to say. Jacob... well... not so much.

Initially I didn't like him because he was the "Token Black Guy". I hate token ANYTHING characters. Especially in an environment like ME where assumedly racial characteristics are beginning to be less and less apparent as Earth becomes more of a melting pot of cultures thanks to the advent of galactic civilization, and sexism appears to be nigh non-existant.
Later, I didn't like him because his skillset was teh suck, and even bullet-magnet Miranda could stay up longer than him.
Finally, I didn't like him because his character was so flat out boring and full of pop-hooks. Bro hug? deadbeat dad? Really? What's next, calling Shep "Mah N*gga?"
(Hmm, that last line... Heavy risk...
...But the priiiize...)
