I did and you probably have to buy every single upgrade. I'm talking about the shield tech upgrades the armor weaves, the personal gun tech upgrades, ammo clip expansions. All that plays a huge roll. What I did when money started to become tight at the end was to parlay any Shepard enhancements for crew enhancements for guns and armor. I know how to defend myself my crew needs the stuff more than I do

I had a whole loyal squad. And still 2 of them died.

I sent Garrus (who I thought would be my most trusted choice, since he was with me for 2 games now) as the tech specialist. And he died.

I chose Jacob as the leader of the second team because I wanted Miranda with me. That may have been the problem. I think Miranda may have to be the leader on the first time, as she volunteers, so that part can work.

The second part I chose Thane as the leader, and he bled to death when we met later.

Jack was my Biotic through the barrier part, and everything went smoothly.

I sent Mordin back with the crew, thinking they would die, and he was the "expandable". But they survived.

I went with Grunt and Miranda all the way.

I believe that for the tech specialist to survive the first part, we may have to let Miranda go as the leader. Or another strong leader. Jacob was a soldier, not a leader. And although I wanted to give him the chance, may have been a bad choice.

But I don´t know why Thane died. If it was just because he is not a "tank", and I should have sent Grunt or Legion instead.

Good idea. That is also a possibility. The problem, in my case, was the lack of element zero. I didn´t want to waste so much time, in many different systems to find more element zero. I should have ignored some advanced training (I barely use anything else besides the ammo types as a soldier) and got the upgrades.

I never bought any of those advanced training, I went to every system and scanned every planet (the galaxy is 100% explored in my game).  I found the planets that have element zero are the ones that were highly colonized and colonized by many extinct races as well.  There are exceptions as well but many of the purplish colored planets have an abundance of element zero.

Out of all the planets that have shops on them I believe I couldn't afford about 4 items.

make everyone loyal, talk to jacob and ask about upgrades for heavy armor, talk to tali for kinetic barriers, talk to garrus for a thanix cannon. buy all of these. chose legion for tech specialist, garrus to lead both 2nd teams, zaeed to lead everyone back to normandy, samara for biotic specialist. just chose loyal teammates for your squad in the final battle and everyone should live.

since bioware loves us so much you need full paragon to stop the fight. we love you too biowarePosted Image.
if you talk to the person you didn't chose to side with later you can get their loyalty back if you get full paragon later

I´m inclined to believe in the "upgrades" reason for not loosing a squad member. Garrus is a leader. He led a team, and that was part of the story. So, the only possibility for loosing a tech for wrong choice of leader would be that you (we) didn´t accept Miranda´s offer to lead. (taking in consideration that everyone is loyal and etc)

So, I would say that the theory about the upgrades being the main factor for loosing a squad member is probably correct.

-------------

I´ll have to play again to make another character to take to ME3. I´m not taking a character who lost Garrus on the mission.

-------------

Or maybe replay this part and sacrifice another one, like Mordin. Because I like to take the first character I played. Just because it is not only "flawed" (meaning that the next ones will be much better), he is the one that you consider the guy who really didn´t know what was going to happen. :)

ok, I'm having the Same problem. Everyone in my group is 100% loyal. I have every upgrade that was talked about. Even the Medical bay, probes, special weapons for my squad all of it. Everytime I run the mission someone dies. First I sent Legion, with Samara being fire team lead. Legion gets shot in the head. I tried Tali next, and she is my romance, she got shot in the head. Does it have anything to do with what difficulty you set the game on?

aren't miranda and garrus supposed to be the fire team lead?

I think the first thing must be the personal upgrades (shields, barriers, armors and etc). Then loyalty. And then choosing a real leader. Garrus is a leader, Miranda too. I think it´s a combination of those. Samara works alone, she is probably not a good leader.

I lost Thane on the second part, and it´s probably for the same reason. He is not a leader. He works alone.

I don't think difficulty has that much to do with the outcome of the mission.  You just have to make sure that the squadmates fit the assigned roles.
  • For the Tech Specialists, use either Legion or Tali
  • For the Fire Team, use Miranda and/or Garrus
  • For the Biotic Shield, use either Jack or Samara
  • For Escort, I would probably say use Mordin or Jacob

I didnt lose anyone my first go. Everyone was loyal. I but Tali as tech specialist. I had Garrus as leader of both fire teams. I had grunt escort the team back. I had samara as biotic. The group I had with me is miranda and samara (and jacob when I used Samara as biotic shield)

If you chose to side with Morinth and kill Samara, Morinth will replace Samara.

I still can not comprehend how so many people have such a hard time figuring out who to use for each given circumstance. People using Thane or Samara as fire team leader? Both are basically lone assassins. Neither one would know the first thing about how to lead troops in combat! Garrus as tech expert? He has one tech ability. That doesn't qualify him as an expert! Jacob as biotic specialist? The man lifts a LOKI mech at the beginning of the game and you never see so much as a biotic shimmer out of him for the next 40+ hours.

Honestly, if you read the summary descriptions of each character at the selection screen it pretty much spells out for you who you need to assign to each task.

Tech Expert: Tali or Legion

Fire Team Leader: Garrus or Miranda

Biotic Specialist: Jack or Samara

Diversion Team Leader: Garrus or Miranda

Escort: Pretty much anybody you can do without.

But she will be loyal automatically?
