How do you know it is even the Normandy's guns he is calibrating? He might be trying to develop something that is an improvement over the thranx, or perhaps adapt that tech to infantry weapons.
Either of those could involve more than enough calculating and calibrating to keep him busy the entire game and into the next...
Can it wait for a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations.

You can't really expect your squad mates to keep interacting with you forever. That's just not feasible.
That being said, the amount of dialogue you get with some of them is rather lacking. A few more tidbits would've gone a long way. I mean, how hard is it to record a few conversations with your squad mates. I mean the voice actors are there and hired already. A few more lines isn't going to blow your budget.
Though seeing as they have Martin Sheen, they may have blown their voice acting budget already

Four (or was it five?) character conversations or so worked in ME1 because, well, there were only about five main story missions to go through. You had a conversation after boarding. You had a conversation after the four story worlds. You had a (nicer) final 'no more to say' at the end, before Illos. (And why do we have 'calibrations' instead of Garrus's 'thanks' talk, which you could repeat and still sound nice?)
But ME2 has maybe four conversations ('how are you doing/backstory', filler, filler, thanks for the loyalty mission/want to sleep with me?), but more than sixteen intended missions to do.
There's a lot more dead space.
