Well both are sci-fi so which do you like better.

I prefer Xenosaga over Mass Effect but that's based on what i have played. I played all 3 chapters of Xenosaga and only the 1st Mass effect.

Xenosaga focuses more on the cut scenes and story and characters than Mass Effect.

Xenosaga is a movie, and kind of a boring one at that. Never understood what people saw in that series.  I have played and beat Episode I, but had no desire to see the series to it's conclusion as it was a poor follow up to Xenogears (which if it was between Mass Effect and that, I may have to think on it).  Plus Xenosaga has a lot of childish characters (momo and JR) which is not just this series problem, as all Sci fi Japanese RPG's are cluttered with characters that look like children, act like children, but are supposed to be older (point in case Star Ocean 4)

Mass Effect on the otherhand, while it has it's fair share of talking, is interactive, and has a way better combat system.  Plus the characters are realistic and interesting (as far as sci fi goes).

That is why Xenosaga wins. It has better story, characters, musiq, etc. My favorite character was Kos-Mos then chaos

Debatable.  To each his/her own.

Random encounters is a game device that became obsolete after Chrono Trigger.

A thing that bugged me about Xenosaga (not to knock it too much like I seem to be) is that a lot of the character designs were rehashed from Xenogears. Shion wore the exact same outfit Elly had, JR was a poor copy of Billy Lee Black. I could go on, but this is a Bioware forum, not a Sqauresoft/Namco forum.

<3 me some KOS-MOS but Xenosaga's plotline was WAAAY too convoluted and metaphysical for me. I felt like I needed a major in psychology just to follow the story. I prefer Sci-Fi, not Psy-Fi.

Xenosaga themes are very complicated as it deals with theological and complicated moralistic themes.

Complicated does not always mean better.

Seriously, what do you expect on a Bioware board?  Xenosaga is great, Mass Effect 2 sucks...oh wait...stratch that last section Image IPB

that's because its a JRPG. Usually speaking JRPG side characters interact far more than WRPG side characters do.

why is that? Don't people like the characters better than the gameplay?! I do!

I meant interact in the sense that you control what is said, not interact as in conversing. Like I said, to each there own. I've played much worse sci fi games, and worst rpgs than xenosaga.

Storyline of Xenosaga was a bit too complex for my poor little mind, and i got the feeling it even was simplified from Xenogears. Mass Effect and Dragon Age however are easy. Still liking both isn't mutually exclusive so i'll go with that. Mass Effect is still missing conclusion, so it's too early to say which one is better.

And this thread reminds me i haven't played that trilogy trough for a year now, i wonder if can still handle JRPGs.

Are you guys retarded? Mass Effect wins by default because that game is a JRPG. Those stupid games are so obsolete now that they don't even need to be made anymore. Get off your dragonball z blankets and throw away your big breasted anime doll figurines, grow up, and play an RPG the way it was meant to be played, West style.

If I remember right, people were complaining that this game isn't even an RPG. And it isn't universal that western way is the absolute way. Jeez. Should I bring in Shin Megami Tensei once again?

You keep forgetting that most people don't realize that Jrpg =/= final fantasy. *sighs*

Good grief I'm getting sick of the JRPG bashing. Don't hate because they are far more popular than a majority of WRPGs will ever be.

Stop hating folks! :wizard:

Since im a huge fan of anime and JRPGS i would say xenosaga is definitely one of the best rpg series i have played. It has a very complex and interactive story, character development is definitely huge. Yes there is a majority of cut scenes. But if you played it, why are you asking this question any way? I'm just curious.

Also this is not really the place to be asking bout JRPGS since most fans unfortunately dont play JRPGS and stick more to WRPGS.. lol i have to disagree though so before i get flamed, i will say in my experience playing games. RPGS have the much greater story telling elements then WRPGs do.

I am not that big of a WRPG fan but im very pleased with dragon age. Its in alot of ways so much better then the others like oblivion and fallout 3.

I still think to this day that the xenosaga trilogy has the best emotional charged drama type story ive ever encountered in an rpg with very complex and developed characters.
