For me, Mass effect all the way, I played Xenosaga 3, and it was okay , but it doesn't even hold a candle to Mass effect in my opinion.

If anything JRPG are accessible. Last one I touched was FFX years and years ago, and then tried out another one to see if they were any different or more fun. It was like playing the same exact game with different polygons. Even the menu systems on them are exactly the same with each other.

In summary, play one JRPG and you have played all of them that have ever existed, and from the looks of things, any that will ever exist in the future.

Wrong,go play Demon's soul. :wizard:

I think one of the things that makes Demon's Souls such a great JRPG is that it doesn't feel like a JRPG at all.

I refuse to play another JRPG until they have a protagonist who is not an adolescent.

I'm serious. Why does every JRPG have to have a teenager as the main character? It's getting really tiresome.

The only times I tried playing xenosaga I wished I was playing Xenogears and not that over weeaboo-ized borefest.

Mass effect, JRPG's aren't that great for me.

In fact the only JRPG i ever loved was FFX, FFVII was simply too overrated and wasn't that mind blowing.

Xenosaga sucks. Walk 3 steps...random battle....walk 2 more steps...random battle..................................get off the toilet....random battle.

How is that different to ME 2? Cut-scene, random battle, cut-scene with dialogue option, random battle, cut-scene of character flushing toilet with dialogue options, random battle, really really long cut-scene, random battle.

Difference is that the combat in Mass Effect 2 is actually fun.

Beside my obvious Shin Megami Tensei obsession, I'll say that both Xenosaga and Mass Effect are better than TWO WORLDS as RPGs.

I enjoyed xenosaga, the original, a ton. With that said I didn't like the sequel all that much. The grand plans for xenosaga were fairly large scale if I remember. Wasn't it planned to be a seven game event or something? I will say that the drop off in my enjoyment in ME 2 is notable, not enough to render the game unplayable or for me to drop the series or not care as a consumer. After the ME trilogy is done most likely I will keep my games unless my apathy that has started for the series continues to grow and I simply don't care by the time ME 3 rolls around.

Now, it's very difficult to compare the games since xenosaga was a turn based game while ME is more action oriented. I don't know, but the first xenosaga was pretty good so I'm not sure. Maybe best to answer this question after ME series is a few years old.

This is a pretty laughable comparison to make in all seriousness. It would be similar to comparing something like Mulholland Dr. (Xenosaga) to something like Transformers (Mass Effect). Don't get me wrong, Mass Effect is perfectly enjoyable to an extent but Xenosaga is quite simply a far more advanced piece of storytelling, using some of the deepest and most difficult themes to tell a story largely unparalleled in its scope and complexity, with a truly incredible emotive quality and some of the best music and art direction you can find to boot. Mass Effect on the other hand tells an entirely simplistic, generic and unimaginative story, with its only differentiating factor being a gimmick (choice based storytelling).

Xenogears is my favorite game of all time. I think I cried after beating it because it was over. Never played it a second time because it is sacred.

Mass Effect is second.

Third, Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Grandia 1 and 2 (squaresoft purposely sabotaged 3)

Final Fantasy 6

.....

Then somewhere in the 20's maybe is Xenosaga... meh. It's ok.  Xenosaga is just a movie with some player controlled fights inbetween as filler. I'd rather just watch it personally. Sad that others agreed with me. If it sold well enough they were goin to release Xenogears with updtaed graphics and have full gameplay for that last section that got cut and was reduced to storytelling (i.e xenosaga gameplay) because of time constraints.

I've never understood why so many people who loved Xenogears have such little love for Xenosaga. While I personally also preferred Xenogears, Xenosaga isn't actually that far behind imho, and it possessed a lot of what made Xenogears so great.

It's underrated if anything because a lot of people compare it to Xenogears rather than just judging its merits objectively from a universal perspective.

Isn't Xenogears pretty much the same thing? The story has always been the vast emphasis with these games.

No, you played xenogears accept for that section toward the end. There were not more cutscenes than gameplay in Xenogears. Gamplay didn't feel like filler material.

I hated Xenosaga. The first two hours of the game is an endless, mind-numbingly dull cutscene that manages to simultaneously put the reader to sleep and preach to them the entire time. The gameplay isn't much better, even by JRPG standards. Learning one freaking ability should not require three different pools of points.

Perhaps, it's been a while but I always remember spending far more time on the story than the gameplay. I'd rather it to have been that way even if it wasn't anyway to be honest. The gameplay was perfectly enjoyable but it was ultimately the storyline that was keeping me playing the game. I'd much rather have skipped out all of the gameplay segments simply because the story was just that good. And the same goes for Xenosaga. The gameplay was a non issue for me.
