I've noticed almost all of the Ashley hate seems to be a result of the fact that she doesn't define herself by Shepard's actions.
That's exactly why this exchange made me appreciate her character more. She's there to do more than just get plugged by a male Shepard. She's Miranda's Alliance counterpart, the tried-and-true soldier who holds true to the Alliance and everything that it (ideally) stands for. Her family's heritage, her religion, all of it.
Shepard is not her life; he's merely a part of it, or was, two long years ago.
I can't speak for others, but my distaste for her actions in that scene come from the fact that she didn't give Shepard a chance. If there's one person who he really deserved the benefit of the doubt from, one person who he really deserved to plead his case to, it was her. The main thing is that she doesn't trust Shepard enough for him to explain. She leaps to conclusions about how he's left her, and why he's working with Cerberus without even pausing to give him a chance to explain.
Now certainly people can change in two years, and Ash certainly shouldn't accept Shepard back without reservations. However, she doesn't even give him a chance to explain. That's not the way you treat someone you love.
Granted Shep dropped the ball with a lame opening shot though.
Of course I think the scene was handled very well from a player's perspective, but if I were Shep in that scene, I'd feel very betrayed and angry and dissapointed. And I'd almost certainly view the relationship as over; no trust equals no relationship. Fortunately Kelly is there for comfort.
Yeah, we're upset because neither Ashley or Kaidan give Shepard
any chance to explain any of his/her actions over the last 2 years, immediately jumping to the conclusion that Shepard was purposefully avoiding them, and then accusing them of treason. We know Bioware needed to keep them away, but it would've been a
much softer blow if they had given us something like:
"I'm sorry, I'd like to join you, but I can't. There's something I need to do."
or even
"I can't, I need to help out the colony."
ANYTHING would've been a preferable altnerative to them mouthing off and yelling at you. Although, while this does look like an example of Fridge Logic, it could've been written to make people feel not so guilty about cheating on Ash/Kaidan if they're your LI, which makes it Fridge Brilliance instead.
Still, it's an incredibly harsh reception, and as a lot of people have said, anyone's SO treating them like this would be grounds for immediately breaking-up.
