As far as Earthborn combinations go, I only really like Earthborn/Sole Survivor.
"He grew up on the streets, learned to look out for himself" plays into that quite nicely.
I leave the War Hero and Ruthless histories for my Spacers and Colonists. Not that I have many Spacers, since I find the background yawn-worthy and it had the worst of all the questlines in ME1.

ruthless earthborn here, sometimes things can only be solved the hard way
I like
Colonist/Ruthless -- BTW I was shocked that Jack's time in a cult didnt turn out to be the same compound run by Major Kyle. I'm not saying she had to be there...she could have left before SHep arrived but it would have been a nice circular connection.

I'm a Colonist War Hero. Shepard has risen from the ashes and returned to wreak havoc on the evildoers!
My main is also a Colonist War Hero, but I have an Earthborn Sole Survivor and a Ruthless Spacer

I thought it was a good story that a child expected to go on and do great things really screws up but then goes on to redeem herself through achieving something much greater than anyone ever expected. Haha it's odd that kinda reflects my real life. Ahem... aaaaanyway!

My Earthborn killed Finch. She predominantly paragon, but is rather touchy (to say the least) when it comes to matters of her past.

Hey! I'm glad I wasn't the only person who half expected Jack to have been part of Major Kyle's cult.BHRamsay wrote...

Speaking of Major Kyle... I'm pretty sure he was part of the Cerberus crew on the derelict Reaper, on one of the vids. I'll have to see if anything changes when I continue from an ME1 game in which I killed him.

Nope. Canon Sheploo is Earthborn/Sole Survivor. Funny how I picked the same origins for my Shepard without knowing that.

I just wanted to pick the "neutral sounding" options.
I killed Finch, so no extra emails as far as I can tell. I wasn't really ashamed of the past so much as I wanted to impress the Turian guard by my willingness to shoot humans who try to blackmail me.
As for sole survivor, I got an email from my old squadmate (the one who survived but was kidnapped by Cerberus for experimentation to see how the Thresher Maw's venom works) saying how he was going to kill me if I was still working for Cerberus the next time we met. I shot the scientist for him in ME1 so that he wouldn't get arrested.

I know while playing the default Shep which was a Spacer, it talked about how his mother turned down a promotion to a better rank/ship because she wanted to stay with her current one, which reminded her of her dead son, but haven't yet seen anything for us Earthborn folks yet.
Wait, the default (male) Shepard is a spacer? I'm hella sure that is an eartborn sole-survivor.
My Shepard (who is basically just John Shepard with a different class and history) is a Colonist War-Hero Vanguard.
Is it just me or are Colonist player rare? Somehow everyone goes with Earthborn or Spacer as far as I have seen.
