After getting the reward coordinates from Aria, or even beforehand, if you happen to be scouring the Hourglass Nebula for minerals and happen to find the anomaly on the planet Daratar, DO NOT LAND THERE.

At least not until you're absolutely positive you can take down 3 YMIR Heavy Mechs.  This warning, of course, is for those playing on insanity and encountering this mission for the first time.

The cover at the base where you land is sparse, which means your teammates will die rather quickly under the nigh-endless minigun fire from the mech.  There are no ammo caches anywhere near the landing zone of your Kodiak shuttle, and trust me, you won't be branching out far from this spot as you fight the mechs.  Did I mention there's 3 of them?

I usually ran out of all my key ammo after fighting the first one.  Mind you, he's bull-rushing (as fast as a heavy mech can) me and my crew, slaughtering them in the process.  I will let the mech come up to my shuttle and then we play a rousing game of ring-around-the-rosie around my ship.

By the time the first one is eliminated, the other two have successfully destroyed all the crates you were supposed to capture, and have started making their way up towards your position.  If you're lucky, there's enough distance between the two so that you'll get to fight them one-on-one just long enough to get killed by the approaching third one as you're almost finished wittling down the second one.

This was attempted by my level 30 Soldier Shepard.  My teammates were Garrus and Miranda, both with Heavy Overload, but they didn't last too long to use their skills but once, sometimes twice.  Neither were loyal yet (I hadn't even grabbed Jack yet in the main campaign)  So no-go on the Armor-piercing rounds.

I recommend going in with MAX damage upgrades and shield and health upgrades too.  Also, a fully charged CAIN would definitely conserve your ammo supply to help in dealing with the remaining mechs.  Daratar is truly a challenge, my respect to anyone who deals with it deftly.

Good luck fellow N7's

Good advice, its best not to go there till later... Here's my experience.
I was playing insanity on my first playthrough with a low level soldier. I got destroyed by them multiple times, I lost count of how many times I restarted trying different strategys.

I had Garrus and Jacob with me. I'd send Jacob up to a piece of cover with his shotgun and Garrus back further with an assault rifle. When the mech would start closing in on me I'd send Jacob on a suicide run to distract him.
When Jacob went down I used unity and kep't using him as the distraction. Garrus and I managed to get two mechs down.(Lucky break for me) As for the last one I killed it using the ring-around-the-rosie thing you mentioned due to having no medi-gel left from reviving Jacob so much. At that point garrus was down as well. I think its impossible to keep your party members alive, especially on this mission.

I was so relieved when it was done, I really wish though I was prepared for it. I wasted so much time. And in the end I managed to save 6 out of the 20 crates... Really though I couldn't give a care out the crates. I just wanted to continue the game..

This was the last one I did before IFF on my second play through on insanity. I took Tali and Miranda. Used warp and overload and shot the crap out of it with submachine gun + inferno ammo. Then I'd use tali and keep AI hacking the first one as a distraction while i shot the crap out of the second then repeat til they're all dead.

Yeah, I had the misfortune of landing on this world right after I finished omega on my first playthrough as well as being on insanity. It was not pretty. I did however after an hour of dying with my crappy guns manage to kill them all and save 4 crates though.

Unpleasant experience, advise taking OP's advice and waiting til much later.

Wow I can't believe it was that hard for you guys, It was pretty easy for me on my first play through on insanity. I was an infiltrator at that time and all I did was use cloak then charge up my caine and blasted them, next I pull out my sniper rifle with tungsten and one shot kill for each of them and 19 crate were left.

You had a Cain, so you didn't go early with crappy upgrades and guns. Cain makes that level easy.

If you used the Cain, that suggest you progressed far enough to be able to beat the mechs. On insanity without the  Cain (I did not have enough ammo) its not impossible but I only managed to save 10 crates. Id imagine the Cain might damage the crates as well. So be careful where you use that.

i did it as an infiltrator with tali and garrus on insanity my first time, my char was in the teens for his level, probably close to 20. took me maybe 5 tries to finish it but i only saved 9 crates. For the mechs shields i had garrus with AR, tali with shotty, me with viper/smg and squad disruptor ammo. Once they hit armor everyone changed weapons, snipers and hand cannons till dead. The best way to do it is use tali's energy drain power when your shields pop, so you get twice as much time exposed while shooting. Then when you or your squad members need a breather have tali use her drone. My second play through i was a sentinel and i had tali and legion, so it was slightly later in the game but the same strategy plus one extra combat drone. Saved 13 crates that time. Haven't done it on my 3rd run yet but it will be very easy because im a soldier and adrenaline rush is epic.

My suggestion, roll in there with full ammo and the grenade launcher, Grenade launcher you ask? I say yes, grenade launcher. It does more damage than the missile launcher, it just doesnt have auto targeting, which is fine cause big mechs are well...big..and slow. Roll in there, land some overloads and start a spewin some grenades. Job done!

If you're feeling really ballsy and want to save as many crates as possible, use an ability to get all 3 mech's attention ASAP. it actually IS possible to save all 20 crates I'm sure...my best is 18 :(

Edit:  Yeah this was on insane, yeah it was hard, and yeah grenade launcher.  Also i was level 28 or so, so don't try it when your char is low level with no upgrades. :P

Very difficult mission if attempted early on Insanity. It can be done without Cain abuse, just have to have the right squad (Miranda/Garrus works well) and burn the first mech down ASAP with Overload and heavy weapons fire. You will not save all the crates unless you way overgear the mission, so don't bother trying (all you get is a few additional credits anyway).

Edit: telling your squadmates specifically to take cover behind rocks is a smart move, otherwise they tend to do stupid/crazy things like vaulting out of cover into dual minigun fire.

Btw, it doesn't really matter how many crates you save, as long as you save some by the time the 3d YMIR is down. My run through insanity left me 2 crates :) My best on other levels is 16. Grenade launcher is good if you can avoid the crates.

Actually the more crates you save the more credits you're rewarded after you win.

On insanity I think I saved like 8.  Really the trick is to bring squad disruptor ammo.  Zaeed and Miranda are most optimal (for my infiltrator at least) since I had both disruptor, overload, warp, and incinerate for dealing with shields and armor.

Also, dont be shy about using heavy weapons.  Each heavy weapon keeps their ammo separate so if you're really concerned about getting 100 credits for having full HW ammo, you can always switch out your weapon for something thats full.

This mission is a bad game flow design. most players will get this mission after getting Garus and Mordin. this makes the mission seem like an early mission for low levels but it's anything but.

For tips on beating it this is how the mech work. The first mech won't attack unless Shep attacks or someone gets close to it. You can use squad abilities and it won't stop killing crate. When shep attacks it, it will stop attacking crates and focus on shep and sometimes your squadies. If you drop it's shields this will automatically trigger a second mech to attack you. When you drop the shields of the 2nd mech the third will attack you squad. This behavior is what allows you to save crates. It's also prevents you from being able to focus on killing each mech in peace.

I had the misfortune to land here on my first insanity run, right after the first mission, on a Vanguard of all classes. Despite MANY deaths, I did eventually manage to get them all down. Not impossible!

To those who haven't tried it yet, killing all 3 mechs with a single Cain shot is pretty funny. There's nothing quite like finishing a mission with one shot. Shame you can't do that on Insanity.

This is hard if and only if you decide to take on 3 all at once, which means you're suicidal and/or desparate for money. Though, both of these situations probably apply to a lot of players.

If you fit the latter description, then here's the tactic I used:

The primary objective is to attack your own mech first. With Insanity being the obvious exception, you can send each squad member to attack the other two immediately after you've drawn the attention of one. It especially helps if you bring a Tech, or you yourself have Combat Drone. Chances are, the other two mechs will not focus fire on you or your squad for the first 30 seconds or until you've bitten into their armor. They'll just keep firing on the crates. The first one you shoot will (almost) always follow you. Lacking cover? That's what the big junk heap is for. You don't even need to "cover". Just run around it while focusing fire on one of the extra mechs until it finally decides to attack you, too. When a second mech attacks you or your squad, send them behind the ridges while you keep running around the junk heap (it was a broken vehicle, if I recall correctly). Just keep kiting them around. Eventually, the third mech will be triggered and want a piece of you. By then, the first mech should be down, and the second at least without its armor. Keep sending out a combat drone, kite, rinse and repeat.

I finished this assignment this way with 15 crates on Veteran (that was luck, yeah), and 10 left on Insanity.

Or... You can save time and use the cain.

Getting more than 12 crates for this mission without it is pretty challenging I will say.
