For anyone wondering why I made this the title, I just read Ashley's email that you get after Horizon, if she's your LI.

It makes Kaidan look like a jerk in comparison. D:<

Yeah I was pretty angry at Ashley after the events on Horizon until I saw how it played out with Kaidan on my wife's game. Geez, Kaidan.

The letter in particular. Amazing how two letters that say essentially the same thing come off so very differently.

And how! Ashley comes off as though she knows what you have to do...Kaidan is all "Well, maybe...we'll see." It's incredibly infuriating.

Yeah. I felt the same way after I experienced Ashley's Horizon scene during my second playthrough. Sheesh, Kaidan really makes it hard to stay committed to him after his outburst and his eventual email.

I liked Kaidens letter alot more then I liked Ashleys, maybe it was because I wasn't romancing her, but she was still a complete and utter ****, even in email form, while Kaiden was falling over himself trying to explain what happened.

You have to keep in mind that Kaidan's not the best with expressing his feelings. In ME1 in particular, he stumbled over his words quite a bit.

How is his email worse than Ashley's? She says she put the night before Ilos out of her mind for a year. Kaidan says that he tried to see someone just to try to be normal again and it failed. The ending was classic Kaidan. He was unsure of what to say and tried to express that he was still interested in Shepard. Kaidan never was smooth, and it's a quality that I found very endearing and refreshing in his character.

Doesn't she like... quote poetry at you again?

There's only so much of that I can take. Kaidan's email was so genuine and sweet, and he was clearly trying very hard to explain himself and make Shepard see his side of things. Kaidan will always > Ash. And I love me some Ash.

Can we get quotes? I haven't imported any saves with them as LIs.

Kaidan totally blow up on Shepard on Horizon. He's got conviction against Cerberus, I'll give you that. I wonder if making him paragon or renegade has anything to do with it. But I was male shepard and I didn't seem to get the chance to change his thinking in ME1.

I'd also like to say that we're kind of comparing apples and oranges here. Kaidan and Ashley are very different characters... polar opposites in fact.

I thought Ashley was worse with words, which is why she's quotes poetry all the time. But she comes out and talks about how she'll wait for you and doesn't want to lose you a second time.

Kaidan ends with "After this is over, maybe...we'll see..." Which felt incredibly half-assed to me, by comparison.

I think Kaidan's much worse with communicating.

Kaidan: Once someone lets something slide, it tends to pick up steam, you know what I mean?

Shepard: Alenko, if you have one failure it is the inability to speak directly

Honestly, I had no clue what the hell he was talking about and it took him about two minutes to explain that he was there for Shepard and that he cared about her.

He knows where he is in life, though. He's a commander now. He's served the Alliance for who knows how long, and he's seen first hand what Cerberus has done. Yeah, Ash saw that, too, but Kaidan's older and more rooted in his ways. If your girlfriend showed up after being two years dead and working with "the enemy," I doubt you'd be any more than crazy confused. The fact that Kaidan still hasn't fully digested what's going on only makes him seem more realistic.

But that's pretty typical for Kaidan, and my main problem with his romance. He never wants to commit. That end line on his letter was just so perfect in keeping with that feeling that he always wants to keep all his options open.

Kaidan is a pretty mild person. I guess it makes sense in the context of killing that Turian with a single kick. If he goes unhinged too much, he could hurt people he doesn't really want to. He killed the turian, the entire company/project failed aftewards, and the woman he was interested in was terrified by him.

I don't think it's a dislike of commitment but it's a fear of rejection. His first love left him when he tried to defend her. And seeing that he's a biotic, he's not used to being readily accepted by people.
The "after this is over, maybe... we'll see..." was him trying to hint that he was interested. He's afraid that after what he said to Shepard on Horizon that she'll not be interested anymore.

Doesn't Kaidan's letter mention that his friends convinced him to bang some doctor?

No, it was getting a few drinks. He said it was nothing serious.

In Kaidan's book nothing serious = no sex.

See the problem with this, is because he always acts this way, it feels more like FemShep is sexually harassing him and he's playing it safe because he doesn't want to offend his Commanding Officer. The rank thing makes it all so very awkward and he doesn't help matters by playing it so safe.

The Ashley relationship had the same rank hurdle to cross but she handles it so much better. Between the jokes about relieving him from command if he fratrenizes, to the bits about 'Williams women taking things at their own pace' you know she's interested but just waiting til the time is right.

That difference is illustrated very well in their letters. Its somewhat ironic that Ashley, who says she's terrible with words, is so much better with them.

.

He wasn't playing it safe because she was his commanding officer.

"I'm glad you'll be here when it's over Shepard, I'm looking forward to some shore leave" does not sound like a guy being coerced into bed by his CO. He wants to get to know her, but again, he is afraid of getting hurt. As a biotic, he's treated differently by society. He's used to having his guard up. He's used to having to keep to himself and he's been left by someone he loved because he terrified her.

Kaidn spent his teenage years, which are crucial to developement, in a biotic training camp. He's going to have some awkard social skills and he's going to be slightly out of touch with his feelings.

Ash grew up with a large family and seemed to have a pretty normal life in comparison to Kaidan's. She's going to have him beat when it comes to expressing things in words.

They both act like jerks. After what they went through with Shepard in ME1, they should have more trust... or if they think Cerberus is mind-controlling Shepard then they should be trying to help. Instead they just coldly turn away and then send an insipid email. Shows their true colors IMO.

Well yes this is true. I agree completely. Ashley just came off better in the followup is all.

But even still, I don't want them back. Tali had every reason to hate Cerberus but backed Shepard up regardless. Garrus too. Doubly impressive since they're aliens and know what Cerberus is about. I'm not saying Ash/Kai needed to drop everything they were doing to come along. But you'd at least think they'd give you a little credit considering you just rescued them and half the colony.

I prefer Ash's e-mail, personally, since she is way less unsure. Even if it's part of Kaidan's character, he could've been a little more clear when composing his e-mail.
