accident and destroyed while they wait for their vanguard to open the Citadel mass relay, allowing them to return to the heart of the galaxy"

Now a lot of people assume the reapers are millions of light years away beyond the galaxy and off probably near another galaxy. but what if they are far enough out to not be noticed. I mean who is going to go beyond the edge of the galaxy? maybe say 2000 light years. As "Roughly a dozen lightyears can be traveled in the course of a day." That would be far enough out as to not be stumbled upon by a hapless traveller, but also allow for a Minimal wait in case their plans A and B fail.
