I've read that you somehow get this in a conversation with Loghain at Ostagar. I'm past there and I never got that codex entry. Is there another way I can still get it?

I hope I am giving you the correct info - but I missed this first time.
Both Cailan and Loghain's Tent have guards outside. Both will provide more information if you have selected the Coercion Skill (and/or have a high Cunning attribute). You can actually get Loghain to come out of his tent and talk.
One of those two encounters leads to you collecting the Maric codex entry (I cannot remember which).
My first character was a thief and there were several places when I realised that I hadn't distributed attributes, skills or talents very cleverly. In Lothering, either the Avatar or Alistair must have Create Trap skill or a Quest cannot be done. In Redcliffe Village, you will need at least one level of Coercion to obtain an item in the Missing Child Quest.
