I hope Mass Effect 3 has a starfighter mission, or maybe 30 starfighter missions...
If you mean something like Wing Commander.... I don't know.
Might be good but the amount of resource needed to make essentially two game genres to run well as a single game and not totally bork the game is too great I would think. Don't get me wrong, I love space sims when they were still around, (Wing Commander 1 to 5 and Decent Freespace 1 and 2) but to try to put a space sim now into ME3....just don't see happening.
You got to remember though, they're using Unreal Engine 3. And they've said they've barely scratched the surface of it's full potential, and they haven't even gotten close to taxing the 360's hardware yet.
Also, Dem Hips and Dat Ass.
The Wing Commander series is my favourite space opera to date. I would love it if a quality game was made again in that universe. However, the ME universe would make an excellent setting for a "Freelancer"/"Elite"-type game with the benefit that the ME fans would be transported back to the same familiar settings but in a different role, with a different character and with a different set of game mechanics (more space combat focused than FPS missions, though a handful of those could be included too). I'd be interested in purchasing such a game if made by BioWare.
@ Drathan and KFD
IF they were to make a specific genre I would probably buy it too. Actually, heck, I buy almost *anything* that has the Bioware Brand and is released on the PC.
And yes, I would think a Freelancer / Elite style game could work but ONLY if they avoid the mistake that haunted that genre. Namely variety of missions, or the lack of, and the complexity of its story arc if it even has one. Bear also in mind that this kind of game does not sit well with most kids these days who want instant gratification and see things blow up every 20 seconds or so. (or maybe that’s every 15....)
However, what Drathan is suggesting if I did not misunderstood him, is that he wants to have a space sim incorporated into the ME's FPS style game. This could work, IF Bioware has the resource to spend time on creating a good working “flight sim” UI as well as transition UI and game play mechanics when you switch between modes.
Personally, I think this is not such a good idea. It might work, but it might take too much effort to make it work well.
