Hey guys, i just remembered this - totally stupid - comic: http://migo-go.devia...70470?offset=30

Tali's line about 'it' being totally worth it, might be an easter egg-ish reference by itself... :)

16,500 posts...now, I like Tali, and I like the Quarians and the trip to the Migrant fleet...but I admit to being a little mystified by her crushing popularity on the forum; she has more posts then everyone else put together. Now, thread size is only one way (and probably not entirely accurate) for gauging a character's popularity...but still. What is it about her that causes such an enormous amount fan outpouring?

(To clarify: I like Tali, and I'm glad she's popular and will be back in ME3. I'm just wondering why she seems ten times more popular then everyone else.)

I could rattle of a non-comprehensive list of traits that Tali'Zorah vas Normandy possesses (intelligence, sweet, shy, earnest, quirky, passionate, courageous, strong yet gentle, reasonable, a voice that makes grown men weak at the knees, a touch of mystery, etc.) which are immensely appealing to many. Yet perhaps it is more succintly summed up by stating that she represents a figure that many of us yearn so deeply, even desperately, for; like a drowning sailor at sea clings to flotsam to keep his head above the encroaching cold water, so too are people here desperate-yet-hopeful that perhaps maybe, just maybe, someday they may count themselves fortunate enough to encounter a real-live woman who encapsulates if not all of these traits, then at very least some of them. In short: Tali has become a symbol of attainable perfection. It is a powerful thing for it speaks to a yearning inside many of us and we feel its call. The character of Tali'Zorah has reached out and captured our hearts and our imagination and we want more. Much more.

If I had to speculate of a couple of broad Quarian traits...

1) skin colour: I'm guessing since they modeled the Geth after themselves you'll see mostly dark blue and purple hues maybe some lighter purples etc.

2) glowing eyes.....that's obvious.

3) short hair/hair analogue/bald (if they're wearing the suits all the time long hair just ain't practical.

4) I doubt their jaw structure will be that off putting if only from a modeling perspective (its hard enough to do proper human movement in games...I doubt the animators would willingly give themselves a brain aneurysm trying to do something complicated...which would be required for a main character like Tali)

other than that It'll be anybodies guess...as long as they don't do stripes....James Cameron covered that already in space pocahontas, i mean Avatar.

I'm still hoping ME3 will have you running around trying to make nice with all the races you can to forge an alliance to fight the reapers (and hopefully let you make peace between the Geth and Quarians)....or for the renegades....crush the other governments under your boot and make them squirm.

Fair enough; personally, intoxicating as the cake of mystery may be, at some point I want to see all cards on the table. "Put up or shut up" essentially.

Well that's true too. I've got to admit I held my breath when Shepard removed Tali's mask and sighted when you couldn't se even a little hint. And I don't like something it is well...like personality-mysteries. I wouldn't love Tali so much if she would had kept something in secret from Shepard. At the same time, I wait and fear to see Tali's face. :D

Quite, and BioWare are being such teases about it! Tantalizingly close and yet no cigar. Blast them! BLAAAAST THEEEEEEM! *shakes fist*

:o  BEFORE I HEAD OFF TO BED WANTED TO DROP THIS JUICY INFO FOR ALL US TALI FANS:

I just read this on Destructoid.com where one of the journalists got a chance to ask some more questions from Bioware...The part I felt was most interesting was this...

"...One thing we’re going to keep an eye on is how people make use of each of the characters in Mass Effect 2. That will influence our decisions on the importance of those characters in the ongoing story into Mass Effect 3."

All video game companies do this now due to most people being on-line.  They leave a code in the game that uploads certain information to the Developer they want to know.  e.g. what guns are most used in a game, where does the player die the most in a multiplayer map, etc.  So it seems Bioware is actually watching us to see what characters we use the most during our playthroughs too!

My advice?  Do another playthrough and get Tali on your team as soon as possible...then, *laugh* go into a mission and leave your xbox on for 24 hours before completing the mission and sending the data to Bioware!

^_^  Just making sure everyone saw this...thought this was pretty cool of Bioware to do this!

@ The_KFD_Case: First, I'd like to appreciate your well-written, well-thought-out replies. I also hope you'll forgive me for not quoting our increasingly large wall of text.

To address the second part (ie: demystification) first, I agree with you that you can't sustain a mystery forever. There's a point where it becomes a pointless tease. The 'implicit promise' of the character (or story arc, or whatever) needs to have a payoff on some point. In Tali's case I think they did a good job overall by using her to establish the Quarians and the Flotilla in ME1 and then raising the stakes by actually going to the Flotilla in ME2, and showing lots of Quarians all over the galaxy. (Paragon Shep's speech at the trial even says that the increasing acceptance of Quarians is due to Tali's participation in the Battle of the Citadel.)

Let me see if I'm parsing the first half of your post (human perfection/attainable perfection) correctly (it is quite late on the US East coast, so forgive me if I misinterpret you). There seem to be two main threads, here; the first is that Tali's popularity is not only or exclusively based on her actual character traits, but her power as a symbol or ideal. What I think you're suggesting by comparing her to Shepard is that this symbol or ideal is somewhat protean and individualistic, ie, not everyone has the same ideal woman in mind, but everyone can project their ideal woman onto Tali (because we know enough of Tali's admirable qualities to make what we don't know 'fit'.) I'm tempted to say that this would make Tali a 'blank slate' or Mary Sue-type, but I don't think either of us think that's really the case--it'd be more accurate to say that Tali has enough of her own characteristics to avoid falling into that trap.

I can accept their reasoning for not showing her face...I mean obviously we'll all buy ME3 for the faint hope and glimmer that is the great reveal. Smart business-sense....even if it does treat us like strung out heroin addicts waiting for our next Tali fix.

A bit of a lurker though I'm starting to post more. Definitely a Tali supporter, no doubt about that!

I do have my reasons though, not just hopping on the bandwagon. :P

Her character seems so well developed. She embodies a lot of attractive qualities as you've mentioned. Mysterious yet achingly familiar at the same time. Devoted, yet very strong willed and independent (for a Quarian). Kind,
yet not a fool or a doormat. Intelligent yet not aloof. Shy but not a
recluse. You get the feeling she'd be your best friend as well as your lover; A winning combination.

Her voice actor does an amazing job, too. (I love the accent!)
The fact that she's incredibly popular when you can't even see her face, skin or other features speaks for itself, especially in modern society where vanity and self-image is paramount to existence, it seems. Although her figure is great!

I'm actually replaying ME1 to have her in my party; I never included her back then, for some reason. Probably because my Sheps tended to be on the Tech side of things.

I'm really hoping Bioware keep her as a squadmate, or at the very least don't write her out of the story like they did Liara, Kaiden and Ashley. She deserves better.

There were several scads of quotation boxes before that, so I'm not sure if you meant me--but I don't think of posted hardly at all on this thread. I'm active in a couple of the other character threads, but haven't frequented this one much for two reasons. First, it moves really, really fast and is hard to keep up with; second, I like lots of characters and try to support those who I don't think aren't receiving quite as much attention. Tali seems immensely popular and in only a little danger of being left out in ME3...other characters I care about don't have the benefit of *quite* such a massive and intense fanbase.

Likewise; it's a pleasure ComTrav.

I agree that BioWare has raised the stakes in both ME1 and ME2 concerning Tali and the Quarians in general. Personally two of the biggest gaping holes ME1 left me with was a desire to be able to pursue Tali as a love interest and to visit the Quarian Flotilla. In both cases I'm hoping to see and experience even more of them in ME3.

You are correct in thinking that neither of us view Tali as a 'blank slate' or a "Mary-Sue type"; it's a cliche (though cliches often bear some truth which I supopse is partly why they become cliches, but I digress,) akin to "the girl next door". There in front of you all this time, lovely as can be, desperate to catch your eye and finally after much time and toil the pieces fall in to place and you realise that the very thing, the type of person, you've been chasing half the galaxy around looking for while carrying out death defying acts, has in fact been right there with you all along. It is sweet, perhaps a bit too sweet for the more cynical or jaded, yet there it is nonetheless. I also think a key difference that is worth noting is that while we all undoubtedly project our own desires on to Tali, there appears to be a remarkable convergence of individual opinions as to how Tali's personalit is being interpreted. It seems likely that while we are each projecting on to Tali, the source of that projection may not rest solely within each of us individually but perhaps rather finds its source in Tali (i.e. Tali's persona projects on to us and we in turn project it back on her with an accumulative effect).
