Is it because Tali has been around longer? Or maybe it's the mask--people like to draw 'their' version of Tali?

This is right to a point. Statistically the sample size is large enough that it would accurately represent the consumer base as a whole. The only way you can really disagree with that is if you want to make a case that there is sample bias in that consumers more likely to use the BioWare forums are more likely to favor Tali over anybody else.

To that I would say, there is a case to be made, actually - I don't know if it's the most convincing (or that it would even come close to fully explaining away the huge disparity between fanbases that show Tali far and away ahead of all others) or if it even takes away from your larger point, that the game would still sell. To that I would say - true enough, I don't think it would discourage many fans (even the most hardcore of the Tali obsessed) from actually purchasing ME3, but I still would have to question the decision to try and anger as many fans as possible in one single move.

Because I think, short of an unavoidable ending to ME3 that has the Reapers kill everybody, that would just about be the most effective means to such an end.

You are absolutely correct, sir, but how many people will actually voice their displeasure? Most people would just frown, play the game, and move on.

Greetings, sir! Nice to catch you for once while you're in here. There are some screencaps we have of Tali, but most people love to focus on the waterfall as well as the hug. I agree with  your mask theory, people like to try and create her in their images of her, which is perfectly fine. That's what expressing yourself is all about! Imagination.

Yeah, I'm hoping we'll see more Miranda fan-art soon. As much as I love the white and black costumes, it's the best way to catch her in a different 'look'. And I can't blame anyone for using the waterfall; it's a gorgeous visual for almost any character. (http://i867.photobuc...iWaterfall2.jpg).

I try to think about what the most 'iconic' moments are for each character, and I have to agree for Tali it's definitely the hug.
