I never got the Carth hate to begin with but I'm assured part of it is to do with the fact that he whines at everything and yet he is a soldier so he should just shut up and do his job.

Kaiden is pretty much the consumate soldier that does everything he is told and more. He volunteers for a *real* suicide mission not some fake suicide mission where everyone can come back alive. He only brings up the angsty past when you specifically ask him about it. I never got the Kaiden hate because he is the antithesis of Carth but since both are voiced by the same actor it made everyone get Carth vibes off Kaiden.

Jacob is also a consumate soldier but privately and critically aware of the breakdown in chain of command. To shake the whole Kaiden/Carth connection he is voiced by a different actor. Unlike Carth or Kaiden he is actually well adjusted and does not have any deep seated problems that you can exploit or fix by simply being around him.

They are all pretty different when you think about it so yeah. Is it just a general dislike of human male leads in sci fi?

it seems that a lot of people here have issues with Male lead characters... it seems to be a bioware trend...they like lesser male characters but when it comes to lead characters something happens...fear...competition, jealousy?

lesser male characters are generally liked ie wrex oghren canderous

Jacob was basically the human version of Garrus in terms of ethics (not personality). Like Garrus, Jacob's a good dude who wants to do good things but was just tired of bureaucracy. Like he says at the beginning of the game, he's proud to be on the Normandy, "doing something that matters". He's a bit pragmatic, too. "We'll either be remembered as heroes or executed as traitors". Something to that effect. :D

I liked Thane.

Seeing him in action awakened something dark inside me... seeing him also made me go out and buy some really nice clothes.

I didn't have a problem with them. They were just boring. I liked Kaidan for a while then realized he was just so plain. Jacob was a step up though. In the right direction. Give a Male lead a personality like Mordin or something not so boring as "I had this fight when I was kid commander, bye". And you'll have someone with more staying power.

Yeah, but Jacob is more about following the rules, whereas Garrus is all Batman. Jacob also doesn't have an awesome scar. >_> <_<
