I'm just taking a break from playing... incidentaly I'm at the last boss and everytime I try to make it so I save Samara.. I keep grabbing Miranda. I swear that woman takes central stage to the entire game. You can't even kill her during the Suicide Mission unless it's the last boss.

Yep... then again the collectors base assault is filled with bugs... like everyone having an AR. Also... if you bring Grunt with you during the biotic bubble he come through the door with the distraction team when it is opened.
anywho... back to the game.

It doesn't; they don't intake genetic material from other races, just some weird sort of 'psychic imprint.'
The asari are basically set up to encourage a multi-species galactic community.

Yeah weird psychic imprint, one of the unexplained sci-fi aspects of the game that the writers could not quite give us an explanation for I suppose. No big deal though.Terraneaux wrote...

It is interesting what you said about the Asari and the galactic community. You say set up to encourage multi-species, but how so? By the time the Asari and all of the varius multi-species have developed far enough technologically for space travel to interact with one another, they have been through indefinite milennia of evolution presumably. In other words the Asari originated from one place (planet) prior to any contact with other species. How would their set up originally encourage this?
Or are you saying the encouragment of the multi-species galactic community just happens to be a by-product of it after the fact?

I have a fan theory, which is only based on circumstantial evidence and is probably not borne out in canon, that the asari are descended from humans taken from earth in prehistoric times and genetically altered. It explains why they look so much like humans, and it explains how the hell they developed such a weird method of reproduction. We also know that at least one race (the Protheans) were mucking around with cavemen way back in the day, and based off of the myths the Hanar have it's likely they were doing this kind of thing all over the galaxy. We also don't hear any mention of any other alien species that existed at the same time as the Protheans; they seem to have not encountered any other spacefaring species before getting wiped out by the Reapers. I know it's a stretch, but it's the kind of thing I like to think about: what if the asari were created from humans by some alien race (possibly the Protheans during the Reapers' conquest, with the knowledge that it was perhaps their monolithic, centralized empire which made them an easy target for the Reapers) with the intent that their nature would naturally encourage the development of a multicultural and multi-species galactic civilization?
If they just evolved that way, that's a hell of a coincidence (but a decent excuse to have sexy blue skinned alien babes in space).
As long as we're talking about weird asari reproductive quirks, can they 'join' with species that aren't really considered sentient by the civilized galaxy? I'm running with the idea that 'sentience' is a bit of a sliding scale, we have humans and asari and salarians and krogan who all seem to have a similar level of intelligence, and then we have the Drell who, while not being stupid at all, have a slightly different form of consciousness than most of the other humanoid races; we have the Hanar, who seem to be very different in terms of mental makeup than the other spacefaring races, and we have things like the thorian, who have vastly different minds. What's to stop an asari from joining with, say, a varren or some other animal?(kind of gross I know, but like Liara said 'sex may or may not be involved,' and I'm honestly surprised more Asari-alien relationships aren't platonic) Would it mean the asari's offspring would be less intelligent, due to the 'psychic imprint' of the animalistic varren, or would it simply mean that the asari children would have some of the personality traits of their non-asari parent?

Before I talk about your theory, there is something else interesting to note, and that is 'Asari Pureblood'. The Asari sure are resiliant to the effects of it through evolution aren't they? Prior to inter-species contact, the Asari bred amongst themselves for indefinite millenia. That means the entire species was pureblood for countless generations. Just a thought.Terraneaux wrote...

That is an interesting theory of yours. So your saying that the Protheans or another ancient space faring species, created the Asari race during the Reaper harvesting as a way to possibly defeat the Reapers in one of the following harvests, knowing that their own civilization was doomed?
There is one part that I am missing though. The encouragement of the multi-species really only adds to the Asari population. Yes, they attract and mate with the other species, but the result is more Asari. It does I suppose, bring the multi-species in closer and in more frequent contact of one another and therefore culture and technology is exchanged. Is this what you are saying? Although this would seem to centralize it somwhat, there would still be the benefit of multi-species instead of one. Exchanging unique ideas and technology to possibly give them an edge against the Reapers in the future harvest.
I hope that this is not the answer, but unfortunately it probably is.Terraneaux wrote...

That is a good question. If there is no actual transfer during mating other than the Asari using the method to somehow randomize their genes through some 'pschic imprint', then theoretically the Asari could mate with nearly any organic. As far as intelligence of the offspring goes, I just don't know. Does an Asari mating with a Salarian for example, produce smarter offspring than an Asari mating with a Krogan? You would think not, because not only would the Asari presumably try to mate with potentially more intelligent species, it puts a small hole in your theory in the first paragraph. So it sounds entirely plausible with the information we have, that the Asari's mate does not have an impact on offspring intelligence.Terraneaux wrote...
