I dunno, things of that nature, where they are sort of in the way and you can scoop them up.

I have a hard time imagining the Normandy arriving at the Citadel and Garrus stepping off so he can become a Spectre. You'd think that after everything the squad went through they'd stick together. You're right, recruiting is essential, but how they can get separated remains a mystery to me. TIM attacks the Normandy for revenge? Someone betrays Shepard and he has to get everyone back? I know a while back someone had the idea that Shepard might have to go on trial. That might be interesting. It seems complicated.

Its gonna be hard to justify it, the seperation, but I mean they did have to kill Shepard in order to do it the first time :P. They could write in a story specfically where Garrus goes for Specre training cause he feels its his calling, and when they reunite he'll be apologetic that he feels "betrayed" Shepard by going with the Council. Point isthey dont seem to have a problem with the initial breaking up of the crew, but bringing everyone in is the real problem. Sticking together would be wierd because it makes conversation points kind of awkward. Depending on the timeline, they need to have characters develop independantly for the player to pick at it through conversation. And that could be the root of the romance too, just like how ME1 LI's have had a falling out, so can ME2 ones and the romance can be about getting the flame to be relit. There's ways there going to have to do it.

Whether or not squadmates return in ME3 is secondary to my preference that the writers progress the story naturally and fluently, letting the story dictate a character's return versus the other way around. Not a popular sentiment, I'm sure, as there will be blood if there were a reason for, say, Miranda to return with a significant role while Jack was reduced to a cameo. And in a universe as varied and complicated as Mass Effect, one could probably always find a good reason to weave a certain character into the story.

This is not just a view I take with ME, I'm like this for a lot of ongoing series. My greatest criticism of the movie The Two Towers was how the focus of the story continued to center on the fellowship from the first book. While they still had significant roles in the story, Tolkien allowed other characters to step up and shine equally. But oftentimes, with movie trilogies, games, television shows and whatnot, the story must revolve around your starring actors.

Maybe I should blame it on George R. R. Martin and his Song of Ice and Fire series. I love it when he kills off main characters and keeps them dead.

I was eventually going to get to Samara with this. Oh right, her role in ME3. I don't actually see it as being a mentor toward Shepard as he's kind of stepped away from the stage in his life of being mentored to being the mentor. The story of ME2 establishes him as a leader, so in ME3, I'd see him grabbing that role by the balls wholeheartedly. By the end of it, I see a large cast of characters ready to take what has come with their time with Shepard and continuing their own adventures as the universe throws the next hard task at them. Yeesh, that almost makes Shepard sound like an accidental messiah.

Wait... right, Samara... Well, I think her return in ME3 is very simple if you ended on good terms with her in ME2. If Shepard needs her, she will come for him. It's as easy as that. She is his soldier. Doesn't seem like there's much character development in that at first glance, but I think someone who had sworn to uphold justice in asari space applying this oath to all of known space is a pretty significant step.

Asari Councillor: "Samara, from now on, you are no longer a Justicar, niether a Spectre, you are SPECTICAR!" Go forth and protect the galaxy through means you deem fit"

Samara: :D

ahem...in all seriousness. Yes, the "I will come for you..." line is our safe haven, its single handedly put her in contention for a serious role in ME3 for us. I've imagined scenarios where she drops in like the superhero she is when Shep and his gang are in a serious jam and help us out. It would likely be in a hostile place in Asari territory where her authority is absolute. Retcon in a module for Justicars to remain linked forever to their 3rd oath bearers and she could rejoin pretty easily :D. I suppose if an element of the next game is to get very intimate knowledge of "within-race" conflicts in order to unite the galaxy, she would offer invaluable insight into Asari culture, and why she remains its silent protector. That could be a good way to continue their conversations.

I'm reminded of the discussion about whether Justicars were an antiquated order, how the asari revere Justicars but fear how alien cultures would react to the Code. The Codex gives me the strong impression that the asari's greatest weapon is cultural dominance. They reign over other aliens not through military might, but simply be integrating their culture with others. I wonder if that will ever apply to the Justicars, allowing them to work more freely abroad. Samara's comments on Omega and elsewhere seem to indicate she was tempted to continue her life as Justicar in Terminus space.

Heh. For all we know, Samara could start a sect of Justicars that allow more than just asari to train for the order. Little too Jedi perhaps, but above-the-law Spectres beware.

I initially got the vibe from Officer Dara that she was very protective of the idea of Justicars themselves. There was a sense of pride in her that was also conveyed by detective Anaya. The idea of assimilating Justicars abraod would probably come as a shock to them initially, but they are the definitive open minded race (no pun intended) in the ME universe, so maybe this is the last piece of their civilization as you said they mght integrate with other cultures as an act of uniting everyone. The Turians bring forth their massive fleet, Quarians send their fleet, Salarians send in their Special Task Forces, Krogans have their battalion, Geth have their rewritten heretic? And the Asari extend the Justicars. It seems to fit. What each race calls their own pride I guess takes the last stand. Something to chew on if there is a "united we stand" theme.

The Specticar Code summed up:

Specticar's answer to no one, not even themselves. They do what they must, not because they have to though, because no one can tell them what to do. But they try to do what's right, though no one should judge thier actions as "right or wrong". Their acts are absolute, and they are never wrong. If they are, which they're not, then it doesn't matter, because only they can fix it. They are not only above the Law, they are right up Law's ass. Don't question them. Ever

What are we going to do about this thread between now and ME3? We better have some damn good DLC between now and then, because the material has been dry for a while.

I think most of the character threads will turn in to chat rooms, or they'll just die off.

If I weren't tired, I'd take that as a challenge to come up with ten in-depth discussion topics about Samara. Maybe tomorrow.

yea, its perpetually slowing down I notice. I mean there is stuff left we can discuss sure, but eventually you start regurgitating. I don't know how some of the other character threads have steam, well they do have more visitors tho so I can see why. But I doubt there is much content discussion going on anyway.

Samara thread will never die!
