EDIT: I also think some of it is fake obsession too, formulating through a sinister sense of humor and being misinterpreted by some.

I'd be willing to buy this if the person also displayed a sinister sense of humor about it all. If they manage to maintain a serious face obsession, it's either not so fake or it's an exceptionally well practiced troller. I've seen both.

I do think there is a groupthink mentality that allows one to revel in the fanaticism, though. Most people react poorly if you suggest their behavior is being manipulated by groupthink, though.

There is a blurry line between who is obsessive and who isn't on a forum setting for the game. I would think that in this context, the seemingly obsessive nature is bearable, but when taken out of context into a fans life inthe form of obtrusive and unproductive thoughts, that to me is obsession. But I study Psychology and stuff, so that is perhaps not the answer you're looking for.

EDIT: I also think some of it is fake obsession too, formulating through a sinister sense of humor and being misinterpreted by some.

Yes there are degrees of this obsession I think.  Some are over protective of their favorite character as if that character is their favorite football team.  Others on the other hand, have crossed over into an imaginary type fantasy world.  Wheras they seem to have confused fictional characters in a story with reality.  Others seem to fall in between the two.

No harm in poking fun at characters imo.  If one gets upset or offended, tough sh*t.:D
Of course you have ones who relish the act of degrading certain characters to get a response from these obsessed members.

yeh the reason I put in the bit about a sinister sense of humor, its cause there really is a veil here, you can't really be believing everything folks are saying. And it ties in to the groupthink where people just like feeding into the perpetual machine (hmm which thread could I be talking about?) which gives them a role to play, ultimately.

There is another term for manipulation by group think Pacifien. I have read about it and forget what it is called. York knows I think though, because I think I have seen him use the term before.  Mak probably knows it too.

Yes, but I think you're giving the game a little too much credit there. I think there is a certain setting that condones the behavior, and a one-tailed groupthink effect that executes a lot of what goes on, in addition to the overboard appreciation of a character. And its not just the Tali thread that should be singled out, its just cause there is an unavoidable number of them, but Liara thread can be likened too.

I know it isn't just the Tali thread.  I agree the Liara thread is likened to it also.

I read about studies performed with how people change their opinions and beliefs through groups.  Some people start saying things as if they are true when they may not actually be, and before you know it, the majority is actually saying and believing the same thing.  I can't remember what it is called though.

As Pacifien has stated before, there's a difference between being a fan of a character, and letting your interest in that character shape you as a fan. In general, the former tends to produce a less fanatical individual.

@JD: the term isn't important, but I get what you mean, and it is just that lol. I guess its some kind of conformity or group obedience or something, I'm sure I've studied it lol. But yes, it is a more precise phenomena within groupthink

Another word for "manipulation by groupthink"? I don't think I know that word.

Ah screw it, I can't remember. It's similar to a herd mentality, but different. You know how you forget something but you want to remember it just because?

@Pacifien

@Mak

I think I read about it Wikipedia if I am not mistaken. I think it is named after the man who published his findings on it, but I am not quite sure of that.

It's not a big deal though. Kind of like how you forget the name of an actor or movie, and you want to look it up and find out to settle your own curiosity.

There are people who over do their enthusiasm for the character and it is supremely annoying. I just accept this as an attribute of the internet that one very often cannot escape.

Regarding the group mentality, people tend to do act differently in a like minded crowd than they would solo or in a crowd of people who are not necessarily like minded. One way to relay that concept: When I was younger I used to horse around and get into trouble because my friends did the same. I was enabled by them. If my friends weren't trouble makers themselves, I doubt I would have acted the same. In other words, I acted in a more extreme way because of the factor of acceptance and security. I had a safety net while throwing rocks or getting into fights or whatever - my friends.

However, I don't really let anyones like or dislike of a character affect how I feel about the character themselves. In other words, I don't factor in how many fans x character has, or how zealous they are, or what bands they like, etc. It may not always be possible to avoid being affected, but I don't want my entertainment and perception of the game ruined because of eccentric & loud people who are the minority.

don't you mean majority? But yea, thats the ideal folk should strive for there, not everyone is honest with themselves first.

The only way a person's zealotry of a character is going to affect me is if I want to talk about said character. It hinders the exchange of ideas. Since I'm on a forum where the exchange of ideas is my main objective, this is bad.

As a whole, I don't think most people are zealous. The people who actually get noticed or get noticed more tend to be the loudest and most extreme. That is one of the problems.

This reminds me of the media actually - there's a lot of sensationalist BS to get the audience and consumer's attention. They sensationalize and exaggerate things to get people's interest. That is because the mundane and ordinary tends to be overlooked and forgotten while things that are more explosive are remembered more often and draw people's immediate attention.

^^^ lol that is class

@ Collider: you do seem to be taking this out of context a little bit, but sure some of the machinations you speak of are present on this forum.
