Unless they're using a universal definition of "telomerase" based upon its analogue function, and not its form relative to different species, I'd rather not learn in ME3 that asari are the result of prothean experiments on humans, or that humans are the result of prothean experiments on asari.

I see your point. But my Sheps not stopping for broken heels. Just a "Serves you right," as I run past.adriano_c wrote...
Well, if anything, it's at least a vaguely interesting juxtaposition between her character, yeah? Prostitutes dressed as nuns, and all that...

remember when I said its way out there? Yea, you've been warned, its not exactly believable, but I wanted to write a somewhat brighter story about Samara and her partner, one that doesn't involve the partner just upping and leaving Samara with 3 AY children >_>
ahem...
Samara & The Avants
Abstract:
A Samara origin story in dialog about how she met her partner. Does not follow canon. Takes place some time after her loyalty mission.
---
Shepard: Samara, I know there's some things on your mind after the......but there are some things on my mind too...
Samara: I'm beginning to come to terms with it Shepard, its alright
Shepard: Well...I wanted to know about how this all started...about your partner...excuse my brash curiosity...
Samara: No need, I understand, after all, I've asked you to take part in a most personal event in my life. Its only right I give you the full picture...have a seat.
Shepard: Alright then
Samara: mhm, I was a maidan who seeked out as many thrills in life as I could afford. But my time was coming, I knew sooner or later I would have to transition...and think about settling down.
Shepard: Into the matron phase...
Samara: Right. Well...I hadn't come to terms with it yet. Perhaps I was physically mature enough, but mentally something held me back. I went farther and farther into the depths of Asari space, looking for something to marvel at, to perhaps give me purpose.
Shepard: What did you find?
Samara: Its who I found....a group of unconventional and mysterious Asari conveniently hidden in an unknown world, lacking all articles of clothing except these symbols on their forehead, and contained an everlasting glow in their eyes. Its almost like they chose to be lost in obscurity. They called themselves The Avants.
Shepard: What did they do?
Samara: They created.
Shepard: ....life?
Samara:Close to it. A reflection of life perhaps. Thier M.O was through our melding process, choosing to be lost in an indefinite embrace of fabricated memories.
Shepard: Permanent melding? Is that possible?
Samara: Not permanent, just extended. It takes much nerve and discipline.
Shepard: Fabricated memories? How?
Samara: Its not a process you can fully control. When you meld for that long eventually your genetic traits and even deep thoughts start to take form. You share a world with possibilities only limited by your physical inheritence and intangible inhibitions, and your partners. They work like memories, because the components take basis in the real world.
Shepard: How was it? How long did you meld?
Samara: 40 years. Although it felt like 400.
Shepard: Oh....
Samara: It was liberating at first, unlike anything I've ever experienced in my life.
Shepard: What kinds of things did you see? It was a reflection of you and your partner, right?
Samara: Right, my partner. A matriarch named Aramas. De facto leader and eldest of the group.
Shepard: What did she show you?
Samara: She was a masterful creator, and taught me many lessons. We ventured deep into my mind....and when things became...darker.. ..she willfully guided me out. It was when I first saw Morinth.
Shepard: ....Morinth?...But how?
Samara: Not in the form we saw, Shepard, no....she was much worse. Remember, anything in your body can take form in there.
Shepard: ......The A-Y gene?
Samara: The deeper I went the more fragile and unstable the nature of my mind was, until there was no structure, things just........fell apart.
Shepard: Chaos.
Samara: Disorder. There was a Goddess in there, and she was virulent.
Shepard: How do you create when nature isn't stable...?
Samara: What do you when a monster you created.....is on the loose...?
Shepard: So how did you come out?
Samara: Aramas was instrumental. She showed me a path, a gruesome path. She taught me strict resolve, balance, and compassion. Though I am unable to afford to apply the latter virtue today. I came out wisened, fortified, and....a matron.
Shepard: And Aramas?
Samara: Never made it out.
Shepard: You mean...
Samara: Her time had come, I could never tell when exactly during our 40 year affair, but something tells me...she was there the whole time until the end.
Shepard: She must have been. So...that's how it ended?
Samara: No.....that's how it began.
Shepard: Of course......you were impregnated....with Morinth.
Samara: Alot of what happened in there didn't make sense to me. But I knew she wanted me to find happiness. I took another partner, on Thessia, an Asari named Darma, but as we know the results were the same. I didn't
play the blame game. It was increasingly obvious by then.
Shepard: You couldn't know they would be Ardat Yakshi. And by then it was too late. You found out about them at the same time.
Samara: Not in my wildest dreams, even after melding with Aramas, could I ever see that coming. But I suppose without Aramas...I may never have been able to cope...
Shepard: This might be strange to ask...but what happened to the Avants?
Samara: Legends still speak of their existence, while the mainstream have denied it. However, it is assumed that the phrase "Embrace Eternity" was first uttered by an Avant Creator. I do sometimes wonder, much like you, of their fate.
Shepard: If you were to Create with an Avant now...what do you think you would see?
Samara: I'm not sure,Shepard. It couldn't be anything that I don't already have....now.
Shepard: Well..........I don't know what to say...thank you for sharing...
Samara: And thank you...for understanding.
Fin.

According to Cerberus Daily News, asari live so long because their telomerase is special. Telomerase is essential to mitosis, and it's closely linked with senescence.

I thought they lived so long because they had robust regeneration?
What are you doing Bioware?
*sigh* Well at least that's one checked off the "THEY ARE JUST ASARI CLONEZ OLOLOLOL!" Talinth list...
They have strong regeneration like Krogan, so they heal faster, live a long time etc...
I'll be over here in the corner.

This does relate to cell robusness.
From Wikipedia.
The enzyme telomerase allows for replacement of short bits of DNA known as telomeres, which are otherwise shortened when a cell divides via mitosis.
In normal circumstances, without the presence of telomerase, if a cell divides recursively, at some point all the progeny will reach their Hayflick limit.[13] With the presence of telomerase, each dividing cell can replace the lost bit of DNA, and any single cell can then divide unbounded. While this unbounded growth property has excited many researchers, caution is warranted in exploiting this property, as exactly this same unbounded growth is a crucial step in enabling cancerous growth.
Embryonic stem cells express telomerase, which allows them to divide repeatedly and form the individual. In adults, telomerase is highly expressed in cells that need to divide regularly (e.g., in the immune system), whereas most somatic cells express it only at very low levels in a cell-cycle-dependent manner.
A variety of premature aging syndromes are associated with short telomeres. These include Werner syndrome, Ataxia telangiectasia, Ataxia-telangiectasia like disorder, Bloom syndrome, Fanconi anemia and Nijmegen breakage syndrome. The genes that have been mutated in these diseases all have roles in the repair of DNA damage, and their precise roles in maintaining telomere length are an active area of investigation. While it is currently unknown to what extent telomere erosion contributes to the normal aging process, maintenance of DNA in general and telomeric DNA, to be specific, have emerged as major players. Dr. Michael Fossel has suggested in an interview that telomerase therapies may be used not only to combat cancer but also to actually get around human aging and extend lifespan significantly.

Ok I have to say it, how did they not starve?
should have mentioned, the state of your body remains biologically preserved during the process, which lead Samara to believe that Aramas died as soon as she came out. So while 40 years passed, they didn't physically age.
ahh the world of sci-fi....
Ok I know its hard to believe in the logistics of it, which is one of the reasons I was apprehensive about writing it
