Fine, if you're not going to play the game because Shepard can't be fine, yes, that's alright, and you may voice your opinion to Bioware about it. Just understand that it's not some civil rights issue or something, it's just that the characters are not gay. Shepard hardly even says what you expect him to (or shoots where you want him to for that matter) half the time, and you're complaining that you can't engage in some minority sex act in a video game about saving the universe? The game is an RPG, and there are limited choices to be made within the story, but it's not real life. You aren't free to select a twink for your LI, or butter your toast manually, or carefully gauge Shepard's levels of urine and feces, or his need to sleep. The characters are hardly that deep as it is and could all be written in a few minutes. If you want a game where you can do mundane obscure acts such as having sex with a guy or having some deep romantic connection that has little to do with the main story then I would suggest you try the Sims rather than Halo: Gears of War edition.

Here at IGN we've heard a lot of positive feedback from the inclusion of gay relationships in Dragon Age; compare that with the somewhat conspicuous absence of them from the first Mass Effect, especially with the chance for a lesbian relationship.



Ray Muzyka: Here's how the games are different: Dragon Age is a first person narrative, where you're taking on an origin and a role, and you are that character at a fundamental level. It's fundamentally about defining your character, including those kinds of concepts. In Mass Effect it's more a third person narrative, where you have a pre-defined character who is who he is, or she is. But it's not a wide-open choice matrix. It's more choice on a tactical level with a pre-defined character. So they're different types of narratives, and that's intentional.



We're not saying that one approach is better than the other. In our previous games, as we did in Jade Empire, as we did in KOTOR, as we did in Baldur's Gate, and many games before and in the future, we enable those kinds of choices, whereas in Mass Effect it's more about Shepard as a defined character with certain approaches and worldviews, and that's just who he or she is. So we constrain the choice set somewhat, but enable more tactical choices and enable a deeper, richer personality, because it's more focused around defining one character, it's not as wide open. But that's by choice.



It's first person versus third person narrative, and the types of choices you get to make within that are related to that, whether you've got a pre-defined character or a wide-open character. Some of our games have been wide open, and some have been more constrained, and we'll probably continue both kinds of character development in the future.

LOL, nice large simple random sample.  I've taken lots of statistics classes.  This study is fail, try again.

I know, it sucks. Nobody wants to do a serious study of this sort of thing. I would like a larger one to finally shut ONE of the sides up. results would probably be pretty interesting.  At least it's something.

You are so wrong it makes me sad... Do not spread the ignorance of pop-science and ass backward thinking, but instead think things through for a second and realize how this doesn't make sense. Did you know that a man can get an erection when angry or disgusted. Showing a man something that makes them disgusted and angry can give us a chubby, it's strange, but it's true. I don't like to be cruel, but if psychology today is your best source, don't even bother putting it up as if it supports your argument (damn Fruedian bull****).

Also, for the record, that study said that like slightly more than half of 35 individuals in the vicinity of the study that were homophobic were aroused by gay images. In other words, ~20 guys from the same place that said they had a distaste for gay acts ended up getting a boner by looking at them, not "every guy that hates gays is homosexual"

This is a red herring anyway. The point is that ME is simply not deep enough to cater to the kinds of minority tastes that would result in the incredibly unlikely event of both Shepard and some other murder machine squad mate both being homosexual and willing to have sex on a top secret mission at the same time.

Sorry if my efforts seem to overstep my bounds here. I tend to go after injustice wherever I see it.  Trust me, I know there are many more "real" problems in the world.  This just seems to provide an opportunity to speak directly to a few people that may not have many oppotunities to examine the reasons for their own fear/ intolerance.

I agree with the OP when it comes to changing the sexuality of established characters to make them gay or bi. I'm straight and I wouldn't want to play a gay Shepard in my ME experiance, but I'm also a firm believer that Shepard needs to be completely maleable. Im not going to say that Bioware MUST make a homesexual option for Shepard, but if they felt that they wanted to, they should add a new unestablished character either through DLC or as a part of ME3. They should not change established characters by any means.

Yes of course, a pre-defined character. That can be male or female. and can choose to be a lesbian if female. AND can choose whether to genocide a species. AND can choose to completely redefine the government of the galaxy. very pre-defined.

I honestly don't care if there is a gay choice or not. There's nothing wrong with leaving a feature out of a product, except you may lose a few buyers. I just wish they would be honest and say that they left it out because their audience might be offended by it.
