I personally am for gay rights in general, and definitely think its hypocritical that bioware put an obvious f/f romance in and not a m/m. however, I agree that the characters that are already established as straight should not be change. I also wouldn't like that I may just be trying to have a conversation with a male character and suddenly he's putting the moves on me.
my personal solution would be to have the game ask you what sexual preference you'd like to play at the beginning of the game. this would keep the homophobs happy as they wouldn't see even an inkling of gayness if they don't want to, and the gays would finally get the same rights the lesbians have had since ME1. Just my two cents

Thank you, OP, for the good laugh. It makes me glad that there's still plenty of short sighted people such as yourself in this world to use as good facepalm rofl material.

Sounds workable to me. Cheap shot calling us homophobes tho, I don't hate gays, I just don't want it in my fave game. Much like most of the people who think like I do.

In theory a good idea, except then they would be whining that the other side is still getting what they want. I could see the arguements now. "I can't believe that they put in gay options." then the inevitable rebuttal of "WTF Bioware! The Straight option is the default! I shouldn't have to move my controller."
Actually...I would pay to watch that argument.

I agree, I simply don't feed these accusations. If you dont WANT gay scenes in your game you are automatically a homophobe it seems. Don't feed the trolls danabe, first rule on dealing with sensitive material like this.
Yeah and if you don't WANT human interracial relationships in your game and ask for a toggle in the main menu to turn off all black people in the game, everyone jumps down your throats and accuses you of being racist. People are so mean.

Hahahaha, so sad but so true. Either way both sides need to stop being so inflexable.

Homophobe = fear of gays, not hatred.
You're displaying a fear of gays, or potentially homosexual situations in your "fave game". That, my friend, is what we call a homophobe.

If I say, I don`t want blacks in my game, I am a racist. If i say, I don`t want women in my game, I am a sexist. If I say, I don`t want jewish in my game, I am an anti-Semite. And if you say, you don`t want homosexuals in the game, you`re a homophobe. And all of these peoples, homophobes, anti-Semites, sexists and racists are on the same level like ****s are.

I wasn't trying to take a "cheap shot" at anyone, I just don't know how else to define your fear. I wouldn't say it makes you a bad person either; I have good friends who are gay, and even I can feel occasionally uncomfortable seeing two of them necking.

On that same token, though off topic...Left 4 Dead 2 received some racial controversy because it gave the players the ability to kill blacks.
In the end it's not about satisfying the gaming community's wishes, it's about publicity. Most game companies are too afraid to put content in their game that most narrow minded people would shun and advertise negatively. This is the reason why there's not even a "sex scene" in ME2, because Fox News bashed ME1 because it displayed partial nudity in a sexual scenario.

The asari are sexually female, and Kelly still counts.
There are worse things in the game that could count as something unfitting for Shepard's image.
I doubt it is homophobia or some evil anti-gay plot, but mainly one for marketing.
And to the OP, don't label every disagreeing reply as trolling or ad hominem assaults.

Yeah was a bit gutted about that...I thought the ME1 romance scene was done quite tastefully.

Well, over 2 games there has been no gay man options, not even a hint of it.
In my mind I've built up an image of Shepherd, and it's decidedly
straight. This is the same for every person who has played the game and
isn't gay. Suddenly letting my character respond in a gay way is just
off putting, immersion breaking and makes me uncomfortable.
Also most if not all straight guys find male on male scenes uncomfortable to watch, it's just
the way normal straight guys are.

Ray Muzyka: Here's how the games are different: Dragon Age is a first person narrative, where you're taking on an origin and a role, and you are that character at a fundamental level. It's fundamentally about defining your character, including those kinds of concepts. In Mass Effect it's more a third person narrative, where you have a pre-defined character who is who he is, or she is. But it's not a wide-open choice matrix. It's more choice on a tactical level with a pre-defined character. So they're different types of narratives, and that's intentional.
We're not saying that one approach is better than the other. In our previous games, as we did in Jade Empire, as we did in KOTOR, as we did in Baldur's Gate, and many games before and in the future, we enable those kinds of choices, whereas in Mass Effect it's more about Shepard as a defined character with certain approaches and worldviews, and that's just who he or she is. So we constrain the choice set somewhat, but enable more tactical choices and enable a deeper, richer personality, because it's more focused around defining one character, it's not as wide open. But that's by choice.
It's first person versus third person narrative, and the types of choices you get to make within that are related to that, whether you've got a pre-defined character or a wide-open character. Some of our games have been wide open, and some have been more constrained, and we'll probably continue both kinds of character development in the future.

Whats the point of having the "gay Shepard" option if its ill-constructed, out of place, and under-developed right?
I wonder if Shepard as the character he is now has that wiggle room for that option. Would making Shepard gay be out-of-character?
Anyways those are my thoughts on the matter. I am not for or against this option.

It wouldn't be the first time. After all the whiners got what they wanted when they removed the inventory system.

IGN: Will there be gay relationships for the male Shepard? Here at IGN we've heard a lot of positive feedback from the inclusion of gay relationships in Dragon Age; compare that with the somewhat conspicuous absence of them from the first Mass Effect, especially with the chance for a lesbian relationship.

If they wanted to have the game follow a third person narrative, then why would they give the players almost full control on how Shepard develops as a person in the universe, thus affecting the story? Honestly, it makes no sense. It seems to me that they took a first person narrative and are calling it a third person narrative in an attempt to dodge a bullet.
