It's fairly simple, the fact that in the first 2 epic adventures Shepherd never even had the option to be gay, but he had the chance to bed a lot of lovelies, cementing him as a straight guy. If the option's had been there all along, this wouldn't be an issue, but to suddenly introduce it would break the immersion factor a significant portion of the fanbase.
Also, Tali's relationship is totally valid, how many times in life do friends become lovers?

I actually see Biowares' answer to that question as highly suspect. I think they are afraid of what people 'may' think about having a gay male relationship. They offer everything but a gay Shep, then claim he's a pre-defined character? I don't buy it.

If you are sitting there being condescending towards that AAA title and it's hardcore fanbase, then you just sound like a sour lemon. That game is awesome, ME is awesome.
