I rarely give orders to my squaddies.  I just kinda let them do their thing.  I don't like slowing the game down, and it seems to work on Normal (first runthrough) and Veteran (current runthrough).  Although I have started to swap out their weapons here and there on Veteran, so they can punch through armor or shields as required.

On Hardcore and Insanity, you'll need to utilise your squadmates to maximise effectiveness. I've disabled power usage for them because I don't like having to wait for an overload or warp to recharge.

A good combination in the early game, on hardcore, is a Miranda and Jacob Warp/Pull, where Miranda warps the enemy armour, and then Jacob pulls them into the air.

Its easy to be nonchalant towards their abilities in the lower difficulties.

Also, in Insanity you'll want to command your squaddies to use every little bit of cover they can ... and using the commands seems to be the only way to get them to stay put. If you let them do their thing, they tend to shuffle from cover to cover as they try to flank the enemy - something we do much better than them. How often do I control? Every time.

I just completed my Insanity playthrough and while I didn't need to control them very often on Normal, on Insanity (and I'm guessing Hardcore as well) you need to micromanage them extensively. Except for in the "training area" (Cerberus Station) every single enemy will have at least one type of protection. Enemies are highly accurate and fire much more. You'll need an effective squad which is well managed to effectively bring down enemy defenses so you can finish them off quickly. Letting your squadmates do their own thing will usually result in them going down quickly ... medigel/unity is critical on Insanity so save as much as you possibly can.

I usually tell them to move to different barricades to have either a tactical advantage and spread enemy fire a bit.

Plus it helps my Shepard character to survive more.

So yeah, I control 'em quite a bit.

One of the awesome things about ME2 combat is that you can map your squaddie's powers to the 1-8 shortcuts. Meaning that if you turn squad mate auto power usage off you can have complete real time control of them.

You don't really need to control them on most difficulties, as the AI is quite good, but I like having complete control so I make use of squad commands regularly.

I dont use them that much, but as stated by the time you get to the higher skill levels you will require team mate usage a lot!

I use my team mates all the time. From the second I get squad mates in the game im telling them what to do. It just maximizes their effectivness instead of just letting them run around like headless chickens doing their own things and blasting off powers whenever they want to. I love setting up crossing fields of fire and letting them lay down a front while I flank the enemy. I think for me it just ads a lot more fun and excitement being able to control them and use them effectively in a fire fight

I don't control them at all. Despite me telling them what to do, on Insanity mode they always find ways to die. Come out of cover to shoot when they have no shields up and get nailed by 3 rockets.

It becomes annoying after a while, it's much easier to concentrate on what YOU are doing rather than giving them instructions and having their AI screw up.

There's a lot of situations where they're extremely useful, but there are a lot of cases where they die and you just think to yourself, "Now why the hell did they do that?"

The more you use them, the less you die. Of course they sometimes do stupid things like run into the line of fire. O_o

Just make sure you have the medigel ready.

A LOT. I'm on Insanity though. Sometimes, unless you specifically designate a cover point, they rush in from cover to cover or flit about. Also, combos are your friend. Overload, lift, and warp in quick succession.

I feel like Bioware did a great job with the squads this time around. In ME1, that was frustrating. They never did the obvious right this (like getting to cover when its there and they are dying). Now, I usually just let them do their own things. Maybe this will change as I up the difficulty (I tried normal the first playthrough, will do veteran again)

On my adept, I used their powers constantly to work alongside mine. On my soldier, I'm so focused on playing Rambo that I tend to forget to pay attention to my squad half of the time.

Depends on the fight, really. I'm currently playing on Insanity, and it seems like there's some fights where the AI just goes freakin' retarded, and I have to control every movement they make. At other times, it seems like they do better if I'm not controlling them.

For instance, on the Collector's Ship, I found that I had an easier time surviving if I just let them sit where ever they wanted, and just used their Powers on Harbinger.

Over during Garrus' loyalty mission, on the other hand, I had to control their every movement, otherwise they'd be dead before I even killed the first enemy.

I tend to agree with Ingahootz. Let my squaddies do their thing most of the time. If they get incapacitated, I might use unity if things are looking grim. Otherwise, I'll just wait until they can recover themselves if they do something stupid.

Only if I can set up a nice combo move will I actually control my squadmates. A good Overload/slam combo followed by a singularity/warp is always nice.

On my first Insanity run, thanks to a lot of the excellent gameplay videos posted on youtube (look for adanceofmasks) as soon as I get to a new combat area I look for the best spot to hide them away out of harm's reach and plant them there. It's the only way to not chug through your medigels as if it was cheap homebrew healing them 'cause they tend to go walkabout looking for daisies to pick in the middle of combat. By the way, just what is it with this "I'll just hop up on TOP of this cover and shoot from here" thing they have? Definitely unhealthy.

I'll rarely tell my squadmates where to take cover because it will always go bad for me. They seem to ignore the enemy flanking to their position. If I don't get the position just right, they'll sit wide open next to the cover they should be using. If I did send them to cover, it was to direct them to the opposite end of the battlefield while I did the actual shooting, occasionally using a squadmate's power on an enemy that's in my line of sight. Which didn't make sense because the enemy was definitely not in the squadmate's line of sight.

I've noticed some squadmates are better at keeping themselves alive versus others. Garrus is the worse - I guess he just likes to take every bullet and rocket to the face now. Tali can be just as bad with her shotgun and complete lack of extra shielding. Kasumi seems to be the best - wonder if they tweaked the squadmate AI a bit when they did her DLC.

I use their abilities all the time, pretty much as often as possible, but I rarely order them about in combat other than to tell them to hold place. Sometimes the AI decides to vault cover into 10 incoming enemies for ****s and giggles if I don't order them to take cover, but I usually just don't bother.

All in all the AI seems to be improved quite a bit from ME1. They still die every once in a while on NG+ Insanity, especially on a mission such as Jacob's loyalty, where 3 assault rifle bullets (slight exaggeration) down them. In those situations I often just finish the battles myself.

I find when playing a vanguard I have to be more explicit with them. For instance if you get too far away from them, the AI seems to think that you want them to run after you. This is pretty much a death sentence because they seem to ignore enemies shooting at them and they'll die.

Additionally, ss a vanguard, if I am some distance from a squadmate and I use one of their powers, sometimes they end up getting teleported right next to me.

I barely bothered to understand how to use the squad controls when I played the game for the first time on Normal, and it did seem like a pointless chore that just disrupted gameplay, but once you get to HC/Insanity, it pretty much becomes vital. You need to take control of their ability usage to strip down enemy defenses, and you have to make sure they stay behind cover because if they both keel over and you're out of medigel, that usually means you're dead.

Depends on who I have with me.  I don't give orders to Garrus or Zaeed, but I do use the biotic and tech orders sometimes.   Especially Mordin's fire and ice.  Have him freeze someone and then I'll shoot them.

although i believe everything said so far,( team use during higher lvl. playthroughs) On insanity i got

3/4 of the way through with out messing with squad tactics. Most of the time during veteran playthroughs

they kept getting in the way .

trying to get them into cover, they would just stand at the spot and shoot at wall or barricade instead of getting into cover then shoot. selecting wheel and command to get them into position, finally, usually ended bad for Shepard. paying attention to team rather then the baddies that are closing in

This is the best part of playing insanity mode...the feeling that you have a team to help you.

I just had one of the best missions on this game by playing tactical and using my squad. From cover to cover, myself, Garrus and Zaeed were unstopable on Tali's recruitment mission. It definitely became my favourite mission of the game on this playthrough.
