Lack of NPC Character Variety/Genders

One of the side issues that players (including myself) bought up after ME1's release was the lack of variety in NPC characters. Most notably, the lack of female characters for races. This is something that I expected to be fixed in ME2, but they are just as conspicious in their absence as the original.
To date, we have yet to encounter female Salarians, Volus, Batarians, Turians, Elcor, Krogan etc etc. This is quite surprising given that there are a fair amount of human females in the world. It's even more surprising that specific mention of Krogan females comes up in ME2, and yet we never see or even hear one.
There is also a distinct lack of children in the game. I understand there are legitimate reasons for this, but given that Shepard cannot draw his weapons in populated non-combat areas anymore, there's not much chance that a player can violently "abuse" the presence of a NPC minor. These absences simply don't make any sense. It feels like a complete oversight not to have any of these characters in the game, and despite the otherwise deep and rich world, it feels comparatively sloppy on behalf of the devs.
I love both games - I think they're great, and this issue isn't one that will change that. I do feel though that it's a bit disappointing considering it was an issue mentioned for the first game but not acted upon in the slightest.

This may have been bought up already, but for the life of me I cannot find a search function on these new forums, so I apologise in advance.

I'm pretty sure there is a female Krogan on Tuchanka that you can talk to. Honestly, its not that big of a deal to me but I wouldn't mind if they did flesh out some of the female aliens.
