Hmmm... personally, here's my take: I'd like it if they simply kept the same squad together in ME3 (provided you all survived), minus Thane and possibly Mordin. Sadly, that probably won't happen.
I think a smaller squad could work here. So, keep characters who're likely to survive/stay with Shepard (Miranda, Jacob, Legion, Tali, Jack, Garrus, Grunt), and perhaps have cameos from others? I'm not talking small ones; like, perhaps a long genophage/experiment-related quest chain from Mordin if he survived (and more dialogue. Cmon, he's AWESOME), or having high-ranking Hanar be better-disposed since you've helped Thane find peace before he died.
Therein lies the root problem; will Bioware create complete storyline and dialogue for a squadmate that might be dead? .. it would be far easier to just write squaddies who could die in ME2 into an ME3 cameo like they did with Ash, Kaiden and Wrex .. and unfortunately, everyone can die in ME2.
It's not about who they might write out due to plot; it's about how (or even if) they'll write in characters who might be dead in the ME2 saves we're importing.

As long as I get to have Blasto and Conrad fighting by my side, I'll buy it.

Zaeed will probably move on
Tali is here to stay seeing as she's vas normandy now
Garrus will stay because of Shepard
Grunt will stay seeing as Shepard is his battlemaster/sensei
Legions will stay because of his strange facination with Shepard
Samara will go and continue wondering
Thane will be dead or dying
Jack might stick around seeing that the crew is the closest thing to a family she has
Mordin will be there because he is only 50 in salarian years
Miranda and Jacob will both be back because of their positions on the ship and devotion
i doubt mordin will be in 3, salarians are only supposed to live to be about 40.

He's listed as 50 on the BW website.
Mind you, some of those ages are a bid odd; Zaeed is listed as being 40 and I'm sure I remember Shepard saying that in the Mass Effect universe, humans could hit 150. Cikey, he's had a hard life.

The sight also says Grunt is 22 and Samara is 600, in game she says she's nearly 1000.

To sound like a broken record (at least on these forums), Tali and Shepard are "it" and together forever. Yet, I worry that Bioware will have her leave Shepard simply because it'll be easier to do than not implement her dialogue permanently into the game.
there is no way that Tali is going to leave Shepard if Tali is your romance and assuming she survived ME2 in your game. You honestly think there is a chance of that. Take a look around the forums and tell me that one again.

I think the only people that should return in ME3 as squadmates are those that can be guaranteed not to die. That way they can concentrate their resources on making the game really deep and developed. Trying to write 12 or so people into the story that may not even be alive is a real waste of development time. Everyone else gets a brief cameo if they are alive.
Or how about they just punish the people that let their crew die by not having them be accessible in the third game.
Zaeed, Samara, and possibly Jack I could see moving on after the game. Thane and Mordin could be written out through death, if it came to that.
Everyone else should stay on in some capacity. I could maybe see them relegating Tali to working the engines instead of a regular squadmate. Garrus would almost have to stay as a squaddie, unless you want him to callibrate those damn guns again.
Really, where would everyone else go? What more pressing concerns does, say, Jacob have to attend to?

I don't think they'll "punish" anyone (only 2-3 available squadmates); BW wants to sell their games after all
well if your shepherd dies you are punished by not being able to import that save to me3...so I wouldn't say that they are above punishing lazy people who had their squadmates killed.

Cerebrus gets Collector base, regardless of your choice, be it in pieces or one big piece. Cerebrus reanimates whoever you let die, because they kick ass and take names. They will probably brainwash them or something to kick Shepard in the nuts. Everybody wins.
I don't know why everyone seems to think Shepard being revived is something simple and repeatable in future installments. In the first mission, it is stated many times how unlikely revival is, and the fact that they managed it was a medical marvel. Not to mention that it cost billions of credits.

And Wrex will probably be the leader of the Krogans that Shepherd will have to persuade to lend the Krogan army in the all-out war against the Reapers.

i think the better question is who won't have a play through of me2 where everyone survives? it's fairly likely the core fanbase will.

1)If a squad mate died during the suicide mission, they should be handled like Wrex. An NPC instead takes their position, if any position was to be had. This NPC should not be recruitable.
2) Romance interests should take priority on being squad mates.
3) ME2 players should have to deal with the consequences of handling the suicide mission poorly.
4) ME3 players don't even need to worry this time around. It's the last game, just assume most/all squad mates were recruited and survived. Maybe Grunt, Zaeed, and Legion were not recruited though.
5) Add maybe 1-3 new squad mates for those who botched the suicide mission.

I don't give a flying Sh!t if they take Zaeed out. In fact, I intend to get him killed from now on. He's a worthless loose cannon with no morals.Willowhugger wrote...
Ironically, the problem for me is the fact that I engaged with a lot of the characters more than I did in ME1. Zaeed, Samara, and Thane not showing up in ME3 is entirely understandable. Zaeed is richer than God now, Samara is a wandering samurai who will wander away after this mission, and Thane is going to die. The problem is that the other characters are pretty deeply and intimately tied to our heroes. Them suddenly disappearing in Mass Effect 3 is going to be a rather serious loss.
To sound like a broken record (at least on these forums), Tali and Shepard are "it" and together forever. Yet, I worry that Bioware will have her leave Shepard simply because it'll be easier to do than not implement her dialogue permanently into the game. Garrus too would follow Shepard into Hell, so where the Hell would he go?
I also have difficulty believing Grunt, Jacob, Legion, and Jack would ever leave his side.
