So.. is the survival of your final squad solely dependent on loyalty?
No it depends on how you upgrade your ship and how you assign to lead squads at the end mission

Anyone know what the fewest number of surviving squadmates is that still gives you a living Shepard?
Is it one?
I believe it is indeed one, provided you don't recruit Zaeed. Really hard to accomplish - you pretty much have to try and get that outcome, but I think it's doable.
I was curious because if it is one it does make Bioware's job a lot harder, but not impossible i think.
Those who loose a bunch of people just have a smaller squad, maybe 5 new characters for a total of what? 16.
With the overwhelming sucess of ME2, i think they will have the means to do it.
Yeah, I agree. It's challenging but doable. And frankly since the decisions and branching paths, and ability to continue your character and his/her stories across a trilogy is the signature feature of ME, I have faith they will put the appropriate amount of focus on it.

Well that's kinda complicated, I doubt any of the members from ME2 will be in your squad in ME3. Considering you can transfer your save file to ME3 and say Tali is in your squad in ME3 but what if she died in ME2 in your save file? Will you simply have one less squad member or will she be replaced by someone? And same can be said about all the other squad members.... I can only imagine what a pain it is to develop ME3 with all the things that can happen in the previous games, how are they gonna work it all together?
LOL. This is why I have said over and over, that I don't see the romances from ME1 and ME2 being available in ME3.

It's pretty simple actually - if a character died, they don't get implemented into your ME3 game. That's it. ME3 likely won't be a squad-driven game like ME2 was. Think of ME1 - imagine, say, Garrus disappears from his station next to the Mako, and you can't talk to him or take him on missions. Would that dramatically change your ME1 game? I imagine a similar set up for ME3.

It wont be a squad driven game like ME1 or ME2? So it'll be totally different mechanically? Sounds really farfetched.
I didn't think ME1 was squad-driven. You can talk to them between missions, but they don't really have an impact on the story. You get 2 very brief sidequests from Wrex and Garrus and that's it. They add flavor to the game, but don't drive it.

IF X character died, they are replaced by Y character as your squadmate for ME3.
Will require a lot of resources. But not even close to impossible. Bioware isn't exactly a small and resource-strapped company.
They have also said that how you treated your LI's in ME1/ME2(being faithful/single, etc) will have consequences for ME3. So yes, the LI's will transfer to some extent.
The fan following for certain characters is so huge that not including them in ME3 would be suicide and would hurt sales; it's safe to say that Bioware learned from their Liara and ash/kaidan mistakes.
The ME2 story revolved around building the greatest team in the galaxy. Just "splitting up" in ME3 would render that story utterly meaningless.

They could give DefaultShep most of the ME2 squad. That would give new players most of the content right there.

And i will NOT have paid for, played through, and developed a back and forth relationship with a character only to have them ditched for no real good reason in ME3.
Oh, and

"Mass
Effect 3 has been reported to already be in the planning stages. What
things would you like to see improved from the end of the development
cycle of Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 3?
* I think the
biggest thing is first of all the resolution of all the plots, all the
decisions players have made throughout. Being able to play and
experience all the surviving cast members, all the characters people
liked. That’s one big part of it.
The other part though
is really down to the feedback we’ll get from fans having played Mass
Effect 2. That’s going to be our biggest focus is understanding the way
people play our games and trying to make them better based on what they
say about them. "
Thread = over.

I agree. I can't possibly imagine how Bioware's going to address the issue of who made it out of ME 2 and program all that into ME 3. I mean, we're talking entire characters with all that goes into them: Voice acting, animation, everything. Not everyone here kept Thane alive and there's no way Bioware can predict that in ME 3.
I still have nightmares about Bioware taking the easy way out: They just won't make ME 3. Ever.
heh... believe it or not i have nightmares as well,
Bioware taking the easy way out... every member of ME2 visits NPC land.

Hey.. it's part three of the same game. Perform badly in the early stages... have problems in the end. Besides.. what grind? Go back to some save game before Omega-4 and fix up whatever, and do it again. It's not like it was hard.TheShady wrote...

Also... imports don't care about difficulty. Kick back, take a couple of brewski's and play it on Casual.
