Really good games always feel too short and really bad games too long.

thats all you do! sheaprd dies. shepard gets revived. shepard finds 11 random idiots. 2 hours of story gameplay. game over.

Actually you recruit 9, two are already in your team from the beginning.

It's... true. There's very little story advancement except for the last stages of the game. But I never noticed that until you mentioned it.

I agree. I was very disappointed with the lack of sprawling areas. I had actually expected the places to be *more* expansive than the ME1 ones if anything. What really annoyed me was how you couldn't go to the Presidium, just to Andersen's office. And how Omega, supposedly a huge hub of crime and unsavory characters, had every available mission with a two minute walk from the Normandy. Iilum was pretty bad too. I had really been looking forward to going to a densely populated city in the ME universe. Instead I get stuck with a couple of kiosks and a bar. I presume all of this was done to shorten the time between combat, but it made me feel cheated. I liked it when combat was just supplementary, as opposed to actually being the prominent facet of the game.

-sigh- Hopefully ME3 will get the formula between RPG and shooter right. And give us the Mako back.

It's a matter of choice and consequence. :P It's much harder to release a solid rpg nowadays because of the HD console and the large amount of time devoted to graphics.I did read in an interview that there's no towns in FF XIII because it was too hard to do or get them done in a convincing manner and we are talking about a game with a massive budget.Look also at Bethesda games which are huge, but with a lot of caves or forts which look incredibly similar.

The more area you have, the smaller they have to be if you want them to look great and detailed. It's not surprisng to see that the first had more content overall, but it was sterile and very generic ( Noveria had so many empty rooms).

I think Mass effect 3 will keep the great detailed areas of the second chapter,so I don't think we will see massive zone unless a majority of the game must take place on earth or the citadel. The biggest difference betwwen the second and third game will be the vehicle gameplay.I am sure there will be uncharted worlds to explore with the hammerhead or a variant of it straight out of the box. This will help in making the initial playthrough of the final chapter longer.

It felt shorter, but I think that was because the main story and missions were shorter and more frequent, instead of fewer yet longer. I hope in ME3 the main story missions are longer.

This boggles the mind. I mean, really...my brain can't even fathom this statement. I know that the devs are apparently looking at fan feedback for ME3, but please, please devs: for the love god don't listen to the people who liked the Mako.

Although I guess that just goes to show that you can't please everyone. When ME1 came out, the biggest single complaint related to the Mako. Now that they've gotten rid of it, people want it back.

the game isn't short, the suicidal mission is. I would like to play through more stages in the final mission, but that's all.

Hush now.  We want the mako back.

The mako was never the issue.  It was the mountanous palette swapped terain and the same 3 buildings repeated over and over.

I can't fathom how anyone wouldn't want some sort of vechicular exploration in a galaxy wide game.

I actually liked ME1 more thant ME2, seems like it was bigger, it had more choices, side quests and people to talk to, ME2 felt VERY linear and too fight-oriented.

I felt the main storyline in ME1, ME2 and even DA was too short and almost predictable. ME2 and DA pretty much has the same structure, Intro, go to a few places to collect allies, optional stuff to gain loyalty, then finale. I'm only referring to the main story line which I believe the original poster was really referring to and not the time required to play through the game with all the optional stuff.

I also felt ME2 was too short. I haven't been playing it for very long, and allthough I haven't checked how many actual hours I've spent on it, it's easily half or less the time I spent on my last playthrough of ME1.
When I had finished the Suicidal Mission portion of the game I went; "Wait, is this all of it? I must have missed a lot of intrigues and side-quests". But, I hadn't.
Aside from being decidedly too short, it certainly was a great game and good sequel.

Ps: To be honest, I miss the Mako and the Mako-missions too.

I really enjoyed the game but I also felt it was a bit short. I did all loyalty missions and scanned a few anomalies, as well as completed all assignments. It took me two weeks to complete the game (coz I do have a life), but in total my playthrough lasted only 25 hours give or take. I'm hoping ME3 would be much longer.

With regards to the Mako, I wasn't really a big fan of it in ME1 so I could care less if they didn't bring it back in ME3. I found it hard to navigate (on the Xbox360) and a little frustrating.

It felt shorter then ME1, even with 2 disks. However, they had a different balance of graphics, combat and dialog in ME2. I am hoping that there will be a lot more DLC missions and weapons to compensate.

About the same time for me, actually. And it is surprisingly 'too' short for this kind of game. I mean Dragon Age Origins and ME1 took at least twice that with all the snippets of sidequests etc.

Are you guys f*cking insane?!?!? Mass Effect 2 is NOT short especially not if you recruit every squad-member and do every loyalty-mission.

Maybe ME1 seems to be longer because of the long, boring, useless Mako driving around missions?

I dunno, but I finished ME1 (with the "complete the majority of the game"-achievement) within 16 hours, while it took me 36hours to beat ME2.

I mean HELLOOOOOOOO people, ME2 needed TWO disks because it's so big it couldn't fit on one disk. Think about THAT!

Lucos, I liked the mako mission and exploration, thats my opinion and i wonder why many people disliked the mako... it was fun IMHO.

As for the game requiring two disks, it simply means that the game is technicaly bigger (better graphics, bigger texture files etc.) not longer.

I think the overall length is about right. Maybe one or two fewer character missions and a bit more collector/reaper content would have been my preference. The game has really good replay value IMO and thats because the entire game is high quality and well paced. If you make it too long, replay can sometimes become a drag and the quality is often spread out more.

I'm not very fond of short games, one of the reasons I love RPGs so much. ME2 was longer than ME1 in my experience. When I finished ME1 I thought to myself it's over already? While with ME2 it felt the right length to me. I also try to not miss one mission, quest, dialogue, etc.

Mass Effect 2 was just way to short of a game, a major let down.

My first run through ME1 took me just over 63 hours to complete, while my first run through of ME2 only took just under 49 hours. Granted I didn’t do all the N7 missions because I got bored trying to find them. But after beating the game and continuing I tried looking for something to do. After scanning 5 systems and not finding anything to do I called it quits.

For me on my first run I will always listen to all the dialog fully as well as any cut scenes, do all the quests and eve just look around a bit. Then my second time through is usually played using the other choice of paragon or renegade (first game paragon then the second will be renegade) and i migh fast forward the dialog or skip minor quests.

This game just fell flat with the quantity of any side quests. Simply put there aren’t nearly enough for a fully enjoyable first run through and there certainly no point to continue playing after you beat the game. Unless you like scanning planets. I would rather be bored because there was to many quests to do like in Oblivion than be bored because there wasn’t enough to do. With games costing $60 I expect quantity as well as quality and Mass Effect 2 failed in both.

I agree, mass2 was too short. It took my about the same time 50some hours to be exact, but I did do all the missions, and thats where the failing is. There are not enough side missions. Its a stelar shooter but it falls short of a good RPG (perfected lol). I miss finding matriarch Dilinaga's writings, crashed turian probes and acompanying crude settelments. That all made me feel the world was very deep and vast, that was all sacrificed in Mass2 for short shooter missions with very little story too them. Also the point of no return comes along way too soon, (well ok not point of no return if you care to save people). I stil feel its a good game but personally I feel like i need some more places to explore, be it just a scenic planet with a few minirals and a crashed probe. Thats what makes me play Mass1 again and again.

ok so i got a pm about 50 hours not being short. I felt I wanted comment because there were
similar posts on the forum. i spent WAY more time then that in Mass1 i logged
more then a 100 before i stopped counting (yeah I could reinstall, reload
savegames, and check the precise count, but Im just to lazy), reason the game
was fun for so long was simply exploring planets, they were bigger and needed
to be traversed to take in the scenery. Even the side missions, you had to
located the strong hold etc. here you get a dungeon, when all is dead you get
picked up, bioware calls it streamlining i call it boring.  why do i
expect more then 50 hours? because I did every thing and took my sweet time
doing it, every line of dialog, every upgrade, artefact, planet exlpo...i mean scanned,
EVERY drop of gameplay you could possibly get out of the game. and the predecessor
still took me more then twice as long to finish. After listening to all those
youtube clips about how this game really upped every thing from mass1, I felt
let down. i still stumble onto dungeons in Oblivion even after years of
hiking around that place (if i counted the hours i spent there i think it would
scare me into stop playing games alltogether)

The real kicker is why the h... cant you revisit a planet? that is just
annoying! oh and 2nd on planet scanning making me want to kill my self, that's
was fun for about 2,5 planets.

How the hell did I complete this one so fast?"

I don't get it...
It took me 21 hours to complete ME1 first time, while in ME2 it took me at least 32 hours to complete.
