Would it not be easier if we could make our own classes?

Why can't we all just create our own classes?

In ME1 - I used a soldier and i never used a Sniper or Shotgun and those points were basically wasted. Same goes for me and not leveling up the medi-gel talent thing. I loved assault rifles and i eventually created a new character with lift, which gave me the best of both worlds.

In ME2 - I used a vangaurd and i never used charge. I HATE CHARGE. It doesn't fit into the way i play Mass Effect. I love Shockwave and pull, but i never use charge. I added barrier so i could be a little more open about my fighting, but i still refuse to use charge because all it does is send you into your death if their is more than 3 enemies.... esspecially on Insane. I love that they gave us a choice to learn a new weapon.. (assault rifle in my case) ... which was really cool since again i do not us the shotgun. Pistols are really cool but the HV Pistol has NO AMMO.

In ME3 - I hope we can create our own characters. Their should be a pool of talents and weapons and you get to select say 3 weapon types and 5 talents with a bonus talent being able to be unlocked.

     I would choose :
Weapons: Assault Rifle, SMG, Heavy Pistol
Talents: Pyro Ammo, Shockwave, Pull, Warp and Incinerate.
Bonus Talent: Barrier

What would you choose?

Now for the whole class Title issue, why couldnt they just offer bonuses to each class, for example maybe a solider has more health and ammo, while an engineer has more shields and higher tech damage. I think if we could choose our own abilites and weapons, and then choose a class Title for bonuses, the game would be a alot more fun for people, since they wouldn't be stuck with something they really didn't like.... for example i HATE CHARGE.

Anyone else agree?

I think you just need a change of class, but if I could create my own class.

Weapons: Shotgun, SMG,

Talents: Singularity, Warp, Concussive Shot, Pull, and Cryo Blast.

Bonus Talent: Reave

It would be great if we could create our own classes, within certain limits of course. Shouldn't be able to take each of the best abilities from every ability type.

One of my main hopes for ME 3 is that they implement a classless system for more customization options, and get rid of the universal cooldown so that we can actually make us of all our abilities instead of feeling like every CD not using X ability is a wasted CD.

I'd choose...

Weapons - Assault Rifle, Heavy Pistol (Only if it had more ammo... If not then SMG), Heavy Weapon (Specifically the Collector Particle Beam or the Flamethrowwer)

Talents: Incendiary Ammo, Pull and Assault Mastery

Bonus Talent - Geth Shield Boost

So as you can see... I would bassically choose everything I can already get in ME2 as a Vanguard, I'm happy with my class, I use Assult Riffle w/ Incendiary ammo (Inferno Ammo), Pull (Pull Field) Mapped to RB, Geth Shield Boost (Improved Geth Shield Boost) Mapped to LB and Assult mastery (Champion)

Another Improvement for ME3 is to be able to map whatever you want to Y... I'd map Unity to Y insted of Charge... I like Charge but I never use it 'cause it just gets me killed all the time.

Tech Armor

Incendiary Ammo

Bonus Reave

That is a bit overpowered though

If we got to choose 3 weapon classes, with 1 being required for Pistol training.
If we got to choose only one specialty power ie. No singularity+Cloak classes.
If we were restricted to 3-4 offensive powers excluding bonus talents.

As for cooldowns, cut them down some. Ex: Make Pull's cooldown 1.5 seconds, and Singularity 2 seconds. Make Shockwave and Warp 4 seconds. Make Unity 5. Then it wouldn't seem so long, and you could spam powers without too much shooting if you wanted.

Or make it so every tab for a power reduced the time by 1 second. Ex: Warp starts out at 6, with 2 tabs make it 5, 3 tabs 4, and Maxed have a 3 second cooldown.

Those are some additional ideas that could possibly work for ME3.

I've actually thought a lot about this idea (too much, perhaps  ). It was something I'd always wanted in the first Mass Effect and would love to see even more in Mass Effect 2. Here's my idea for how it might work while attempting to maintaining the balance found in the way Bioware has structured the classes.

WARNING: Wall of text incoming.

Choose 6 Powers Including:

Select 1 class Power

Combat Mastery (Must Choose 1 Combat Power)
Assault Mastery (Must Choose 1 Combat Power)
Operative (Must Choose 1 Combat Power)
Tech Mastery (Must Choose 1 Tech Power)
Biotic Mastery (Must Choose 1 Biotic Power)
Defender (Must Choose 1 Biotic Power)

1 Special Power

Charge (Must Choose 1 Biotic Power)
Singularity (Must Choose 1 Biotic Power)
Tech Armor (Must Choose 1 Tech Power)
Tactical Cloak (Must Choose 1 Tech Power)
Combat Drone (Must Choose 1 Tech Power)
Adrenaline Rush (Must Choose 1 Combat Power)

Additional Powers

Selecting a level 2-4 power requires selecting the level 1 power in the same group to serve as a prerequisite. Selecting a level 3-4 power requires selecting either the level 1 or 2 power in the same group to serve as a prerequisite. Selecting a level 4 power requires selecting the level 1, 2, or 3 power in the same group to serve as a prerequisite. If three powers from a group are selected, then the low-level power serves as the prerequisite for the mid-level power, and the mid-level power serves as the preequisite for the high-level power. If all four powers from a group are selected, then the level 1 power serves as the prerequisite for the level 3 power, and the level 2 power serves as the prerequisite for the level 4 power.

0-4 Combat Powers

1 Disruptor Ammo
2 Incendiary Ammo
3 Cryo Ammo
4 Concussive Shot

0-4 Tech Powers

1 Overload
2 Incinerate
3 Cryo Blast
4 AI Hacking

0-4 Biotic Powers

1 Throw
2 Shockwave
3 Pull
4 Warp

Default Weapons (All Characters Can Use)

Heavy Pistols
Submachine Guns

Advanced Weapons (Select One Per Combat Power)

Shotguns
Assault Rifles
Sniper Rifles

EXAMPLE 1:

Defender + Adrenaline Rush (Biotic + Combat = Vanguard class Title)

Must select at least one Biotic Power and one Combat Power.

-Disruptor Ammo
-Concussive Shot (Requires Rank 2 Disruptor Ammo)
-Pull
-Warp (Requires Rank 2 Pull)

Two Combat Powers allows you to choose two advanced weapon proficiencies.

-Sniper Rifles-Assault Rifles

EXAMPLE 2:

Tech Mastery + Tech Armor (Tech + Tech = Engineer class Title)

Must select at least two Tech Powers.

-Overload
-Incinerate (Requires Rank 2 Overload)
-Cryo Ammo
-Throw

One Combat Power allows you to choose one advanced weapon proficiency.

-Assault Rifle

EXAMPLE 3:

Tech Mastery + Singularity (Tech + Biotic = Sentinel class Title)

Must select at least one Tech Power and one Biotic Power.

-Incinerate
-Cryo Blast (Requires Rank 2 Incinerate)
-Shockwave
-Warp (Requires Rank 2 Shockwave)

No Combat Powers prevents you from choosing any advanced weapon proficiency.

EDIT: Formatting is a nightmare.

In ME1 on the PC it was basically possible to make your own class. I did an entire playthrough like that. All you gotta do is use the console to add talents that you want. You can add any talent that can be given as a bonus talent on a character. Do this at the start of the game after picking a base class based on what class talent you want most and then just allocate your points as you wish.

There are only a few problems. Certain talents were not bonus talents. For instance, you couldnt get Immunity if you weren't a class that could get it already since there was no Fitness bonus talent. Secondly, there is no way to put a biotic amp or omni-tool on a base class that didn't have it already. So if you want to play as a Soldier in order to get Immunity, but also want to have biotics and tech talents, your character won't have the amps or omni-tools to make those biotics/tech stuff most effective.

Still though, I played a game of ME1 with something like these talents:

Sentinel/Bastion

Assault Rifles

Barrier

Stasis

Lift

Singularity

Warp

AI Hacking

Decryption

Electronics

It was absurd.

As for what I would do in ME2 if this were possible, I am not sure.

I think the best breakdown for me would be this:

Weapons: Heavy Pistol, SMG, Assault Rifle

Tech Armor

Warp

Overload

Incendiary Ammo

AI Hacking

Dominate

Tech Armor for the best defense in the game. Warp and Overload to strip defenses off of stuff. AI Hacking and Dominate for after youve stripped an enemy of defenses. This will get pretty much all enemies up and out of cover and not shooting at you. Incendiary Ammo + Assault Rifle to just unload on all the enemies that are suddenly out of cover and not shooting at you.

I don't want a custom class for ME2. the games stream lined, i'd have to sit around all day to make a class talent or choose it from a long list. i want my ME immersion right away!

I'd rather just fix things like fortification and barrier, and make the choice between the "heavy" and AOE talents more interesting.

They could easily add preset classes for people who don't want to design their own class, making both parties happy.

I've wanted to play the biotic version of the infiltrator since ME1 so my custom class would be:

Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Pistol

Adrenalin Burst, Pull, Shock Wave, Warp, Concussive Shot

Bonus, Reave

would be a cool option for those who complete all achievements to unlock "custom class".

Though once you started adding multiple class specific abilities and specializations you might as well just put on god mode and no clipping cause any challenge would be out the window. Still something to think about for ME3 though.

clerkenwell, good post. I will follow suit:

Tactical Cloak + Biotic Mastery (Tech + Biotic = Sentinel)

Tech: 1 Overload 3 Cryo Blast(requires 2 tabs in Overload)

Biotic: 3 Pull 4 Warp(Requires 2 tabs in Pull)

Heavy Pistols

Submachine Guns

Powers: Tactical Cloak, Overload, Warp, Pull, Cryo Blast

Bonus Power: Reave

I call this the Biotic Assassin:

weapons: sniper, heavy pistol, shotgun (assuming you don't have to train for heavy weapons)

powers: cryo blast, warp, invisibillity cloak, tech armour, AI hacking

bonus: Singularity or Dominate

Going with clerkenwell's rules, I would do this:

class Talent: Operative

Combat Drone
Disruptor Ammo
Incendiary Ammo (Requires Rank 2 Disruptor Ammo)
Incinerate
AI Hacking (Requires Rank 2 Incinerate)

Bonus Talent: Dominate

Weapons: Heavy Pistol, SMG, Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle

The theory would be this. Use the Combat Drone, AI Hacking, and Dominate to distract stuff, get them out of cover, and stop them from shooting you. Then use a Sniper Rifle that is jacked up with either Disruptor Ammo or Incendiary Ammo (depending on the opponent) and use the Operative sniper slowdown to get quick headshots against all the enemies out of cover. The best weapon for this would probably be the Viper. If you ran out of ammo, the Assault Rifle would do the trick as well. Overload is just there because it was required, and because it might be useful early on in Omega as well as later on against husks (ie. just respec yourself at various points to use Incinerate at those points, but not otherwise).

For me using ME2 powers the Assassin:

Weapons Default + Sniper

Powers: Cloak + Adrenaline Rush + a basic ammo power +? + Infiltrator mastery tree +bonus power: any

This gives you Uber slowmo, perfect for sniping and good damage as well.
