I installed the 1.01 patch on my system (retail purchased collector's edition dvd media), and now when i open the launcher and click play, I get nothing - the cursor turns into the circle-thing (whatever they call hourglass these days) for a split second, then nothing.

Looking in the task manager, there's nothing running there.  It's like the application fails to launch, but does not provide any error.

I guess it really is just another EA game.

Or you could have taken 10 seconds to read the freaking sticky about the known issue. dumb ass.
