I have already worked around the installation, and patching, and every other error that could possibly happen. After 6 hours of installation, I finally got the game working. I have had NO trouble for over 30 hours of gameplay. It has performed admirably at the highest settings and was very enjoyable...that is until I actually tried advancing the story. I had just defeated the Thorian on Feros, and the game crashes just as the Asari girl drops out of the pod and says 'I'm free!' EVERY. TIME. I have tried every single solution I can think of. The error is saying that my system has run out of virtual memory. This is frankly ridiculous considering the setup of my computer. I have made sure that the system automatically manages the paging file, and have tried multiple play throughs of the area using the lowest settings, and it still crashes. I was really loving the game, and now I fear I won't be able to go on and complete it and eventually buy and play ME2. Has anyone else had this problem? Here are the system specs:
Processor: Intel® Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
Clock speed: 2670 MHz
Physical Memory: 5,99 GB
Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
VRAM: 896 MB
Sound Adapter: ASUS Xonar DX
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
Direct X: DirectX 10.0 (Mar2009) or later
The drivers are all 100% up to date, I run no programs at the same time as ME, and I have 750 + GB of free HD space.
Any solutions?
Mass Effect 1 - Unskippable, reproducing crash at a plot point is keeping me from completing the game!

Here is the exact error it gives me:
"Ran out of virtual memory. To prevent this condition, you must free up more space on your primary hard disk. MallocLarge(size = 2688155648, type = 4096, protect = 4, VM = 1374388224/2147352576"

Solutions I have tried:
Verifying memory is set to automanage the paging file
Running everything on the lowest settings possible, windowed mode
Running everything at the highest settings possible (Because the first time I was playing on the highest, I got a line of dialogue further before the crash)
Starting over from an earlier save
Changing the compatibility settings that I run it on
I've done everything short of reinstalling the entire thing, because that would take another six hours of manual fiddling plus potential loss of save games.

Thing is, reinstalling would generally be my advice in this sort of situation. I haven't ever heard of ME1 giving that error message, so I suppose it's possible ME is actually having some kind of trouble with your system. Still, a recurring bug at one specific point, that others don't experience, and that occurs in an otherwise okay game, often means data corruption in the game's files.
If you want to make sure your saved games are okay, copy your My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save directory to a backup location. (Top of the path is different on Win7 IIRC, you'd know better than I.) If the files there do get removed after re-installing the game, copy your backup back in to that location.

Thank you for taking the time to respond! I was thinking the same, I just wish I knew what file it was specifically instead of having to do the manual reinstall again. Since I've got another 12 hours before I can attempt to fix this, does anyone know what sort of files govern cutscene dialog?

Hey, just wanted to share a similar experience. I played ME through with no problems, 1.01 and BDtS installed. I was halfway through a renegade playthrough, and figured I'd check out pinnacle station... BAD IDEA! apparently it doesn't just suck (so I've heard, though I didn't get to play it...), it also broke my game. I got a reproducible crash on feros, on the skyway. I could find no solution. I tried loading another game that was saved in feros from pre-PS install, and that led to a reproducible crash somewhere else on Feros. Basically I had to reinstall and get BDtS, and lost my game beacuse I had no saves prior to the PS install.
I'm not sure if there are any fixes out there, but I found none besides the reinstall. I know its rally painful, but might be your best bet. I will say that playing ME1 is worth it, especially since ME3 will continue the story arcs/decisions... best of luck and my condolences

Hmm, I'm getting the "run out of memory" rather often. Generally I can't play for more than 45 minutes before the game crashes with that message.

It would be more than annoying if I had to restart again...I think I'm going to try rewriting the dialog files and hope against hope that it will work...if not, then I might have to take your advice...

I fixed it for now! I had to do a complete manual reinstall. This time, everything uncompressed correctly on the first try, so hopefully that's the end of my difficulties.

Hi, I'm not sure if anyone can see this, but I run into the same issue here on my computer... Just bought ME from Amazon ("EA Value Games"). When I installed the game there was a runtime error, but the installation was completed anyway. I had an issue running the game but when I downloaded 1.02 patch I was able to play the game for the first five minutes. But when I was about to head to Eden Prime, the game would be frozen and then told me that I ran out of virtual memory. Tried to reinstall the game but not working.

4G RAM, plenty of hard drive.
